If I had the cash I'd be buying one or two German Warwicks and keeping them under my bed. I suspect at some point they will become trendy again and the prices will increase. Whilst we're on the topic of expensive basses---whats the holy grail when it comes to old, expensive basses? The bass equivalent of a 1959 Les Paul, say.
If I had the cash I'd be doing the same, and not selling mine, that's for sure! The holy grail is an untouched pre 1970 (ish) fender p or j, for most people. A few Gibbo thunderbirds may fetch similar silly money.
I have to agree. This is a beautiful bass and it's going for too cheap. If it were me, I'd keep this one. In my humble honest opinion...
I do love it and it is cheap at the price, and I appreciate the kind words a lot guys, it's just time for me and this one. I've had it 5 years and and fancy a slight change for the next 5. The one I'm planning to buy with the proceeds is a 5 string Corvette $$ Special Edition, the thing will feel very much the same but it has a different finish, and different wood selection, just a nice variation for the next 5 years. It is 1 of only 4 made so is essentially as rare as this one off custom, and unfortunately unless I win Euromillions this eve I cannot afford both. Dan
A Streamer Stage II (yes the rare expensive one) just sold on ebay for £647... in fact the eventual winning bidder would have got it for £505 if it weren't for one other person bidding £627!
My ummm what was in disbelief at the price....

Guitar Makers To Run Out Of Wood In 10 Years
It doesn't have to be expensive, just an instrument that inspires you to play... However if your tastes aren't particularly mainstream then you'll find that most of the inspiring instruments are the products of small companies or handcrafted which brings a premium to the price.
Agreed, by saying expensive may I guess I more meant a good instrument may inspire etc etc - though typically good instruments command a highish price, though of course this does not necessarily mean £10k's worth of Fodera or equivalent -
Of course if you keep your eyes peeled on ebay you can bag a mega bargain...
Talent makes great music, not expensive equipment.
But expensive equipment can arguably give you more pleasure playing what you do, and can arguably inspire you to play better etc etc -
We could always do what the guy on Talkbass did. Went to his local Home Depot (B&Q to you and me), bought a plank of wood, mounted the neck, pickups, bridge and all the rest of the hardware from his fancy bass made of "Tonewoods" onto the plank. Then he recorded some sound samples and offered them up on the forum for a blind listening test and guess what... No-one could tell the difference.
I'd argue things like maple as a neckwood won't be chosen all that much for their sound. There are plenty of issues to think of, those such as density (read as: weight and balance), aesthetics, feel, compatability of joining with other, sometimes non-wood materials, susceptibility to environmental conditions (especially if it's made in korea then shipped to somewhere else), workability is a big factor as it affects labour and tooling time and costs etc etc. -
+1 They could always buy forests and manage them sustainably if it's that important to them....
Fairly sure that Warwick are doing this. Despite the fact some of their favoured woods are obscenely rare, IIRC they've increased forest size to make their usage sustainable. I'm sure other companies are doing this, but these are ones that I know of. -
Post above is interesting. Trying to sell my bass on TB I've been told a couple of times it's overpriced, and yet on here I've been told it's a silly price to let it go for and that I'm mad letting it go for that price.... The sheer volume of extra bass players in the states sure brings down the market value and very much increases a) the number of boutqiue basses in circulation in the US, and the numbers of instruments sold each week/day/month etc. Just as an example, I saw a dingwall going at little over $1000, in great nick, things like a big al going at similar prices etc etc
I think for most it's quite the opposite. In the case of most rock gigs they've got the 'casual' role in the band, they don't need to know much or be able to play very well, so they don't really need to practice, and they probably won't be heard anyway, etc. I come across very few bass players who take any real pride in doing a good job of it. Most seem happy to make up the numbers.
I've always been more involved with metal rather than rock, but never really found (or at least spoken to) any bass players like that myself.
-
Or it could be that most of the guys you see gigging just aren't that interested in knowing a lot about the bass guitar. They are probably more interested in music.
I've always thought of bass players as typically being massive gear nerds to be honest.

Evil Undead has a hartke ha 2500 going begging at a silly price in the amp section of the marketplace right now - that'll blow any behringer out of the water, go get it!
-
The Hartke 5410c I have has the LH500 head in it (it actually says it on it). I love the thing, it's so easy just to plug in any of my basses (which are all wildly different in terms of sound and pickup config) and you can instantly dial in a great tone (and I mean great). My sansamp isn't even bothered with, I love the raw tone of these Hartke's and the LH500 is some serious beef for your sound. Sort of makes me wonder why I thought I needed 12 band EQ on my Trace, because I really don't, it's only being retained as it's easier to carry on a tube than the combo I would recommend it wholeheartedly.
This forum is mostly older players discussing older players and old music. But I don't know if that's because young players simply have more interesting things to do than work on their bass anorak credentials, or whether they came here, found it was mostly threads about funk or prog bands from the '70s, rolled their eyes and closed their browser.
I'll admit there's a bunch of threads I stay clear of, though the thread title or first post usually tells me if I'm going to be massively uninterested by the thread. Still I came on here as it's great to have a UK community - I've been on TalkBass a bit recently just to sell my Warwick, some of the mindlessly idiotic posts and threads are unbelievable, and make me glad to be here. I also think that I can learn a lot from the largely older community on here, which is sort of what a forum like this is about. That said, I remember thinking at my last gig that none of the basses looked like things I'd seen in people's sigs on here, implying chances are that those guys are not members. This made me think how many people even realise the site is here. The reason I found it was because I kept searching for various amp and pedal models and the reviews/for sale items that kept coming up on goggle were on here, had never heard of it before then.

South East Bass Bash No.5, Surrey, Saturday 24th September 2011
dc2009 replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Events
It's in The Gallery as a commission sale now. I'd bring it if someone was interested in buying it, for sure
If I had the money I'd be interested, but alas not Good luck with the sale though, I'm sure it'll be just right for someone! I'll make a similar offer with my sig, though as above it's transport dependent -
I do believe I'm free, so am keen to come along. Anything in my signature anyone fancies trying out?
The fretted Paris if it's still about Anyone on here reckon it's worth a transport thread, to see who can bring who (or what)? For myself I know I can't drive there, can always come by train but will limit how much gear I bring, and I know others are in a similar situation? -
and a reply only a day later: "I’ve just had a reply from Gibson, unfortunately the (limited run) Alpine Whites are completely sold out and there are no plans for a second coming in the foreseeable future" they decided not to answer my bit on the two models, though I think I know which is which now!

What would you recommend for an agressive, long sustain bass ?
dc2009 replied to analogrowl's topic in Bass Guitars
I do totally agree with you, but there's also the string spacing which is really too tight for my needs. Otherwise, i'd have changed the pickups and that's it. And i don't need 6-string anymore 5 would do the job well.
I would therefore advise switching the 6 string thumb for a 5 string one (or selling it to fund the other), the string spacing will be a bit more generous and you'll be familiar with the feel. Having said that, given you have the cash and are a warwick afficionado, I have to plug my Warwick here (see the link to the for sale thread in my signature). I can provide you with recordings of it if you like (in a metal band)! Dan -
"useless" and "take months to respond" are some phrases I've heard in conjunction with DV247 before...!
My first experience of them was winning my Hartke at their bass expo with Frankie Bello and David Ellefson a month or so ago. Winning £830 of Hartke has me on very jovial first name terms with a bunch of them, and given I've seen their prices, I've already gone to them to buy a coupla bits. The guy I know there responded within half an hour of my email and sent it on to someone with bass experience who also replied within half an hour, and messaged Gibson on my behalf, can't say fairer than that tbh! Mind you, they do use DPD, who are without a doubt the worst postal service I have had the misfortune to experience - lying drivers who are too mentally retarded to ring a doorbell, hmmm.....
