Having read lots of advice on the forums I still dont know how to choose what to buy! Ive had some lessons on a hired acoustic DB but would like to buy an EUB I found shops where I could try a Stagg and a NS WAV, but is there anywhere to have an Eminence demonstrated in the South or Midlands in England?
i got a Curruthers EUB - its fantastic!!! Sounds just like the real thing! Its got full range of EQ including parametric mids. can also take it apart and fit in into a small hardcase smaller than a headless bass!! hope that helps

Thinking of forming a covers band - Advice needed
Shonks replied to BigBeefChief's topic in General Discussion
I'm currently toying with the idea of setting up a covers band. I currently play in a 5 piece originals band, which I love. However, the constant "pay to play" shenanigans of London venues and the lack of non-friend crown does grate occasionaly. I've always had a lot of respect for you weekend-warrior covers guys, and I think it looks like a lot of fun. I also think it will stretch me musically. What I don't want to do however, is join an existing band. I kinda like the challenge and idea of setting something up from scratch. I have a few buddies who are interested in forming this, but like me have never palyed in a covers band. I'm thinking of making it a criteria to join - you must have no experience of playing in a covers band! The issue is, with my current band, we only play venues with a PA and backline. All I do is show up with a bass at a certain time and play. I don't have the first clue as to what's required equipment wise, how much do you charge, getting gigs, likely problems, how long a set is needed, how much it would cost to set up from scratch etc. Given that I know a lot of you guys have been gigging in covers acts since the dinosaurs roamed the earth, I was wondering if anyone could offfer any advice/info on the above? If you were to set up a band from scratch now, how would you go about it? Apologies if this has been covered before, or if its in the wiki (I haven't checked as BassFerret told me not to).
I wouldn't.......dont!! -
oh Bb hayve.......!.........
As my search for a Tascam CDBT-1 or the like has thus far proved fruitless (see Items Wanted), I'm wondering whether I could achieve my aim via some FREE software? I'm looking for some freeware which will enable me to: - tweak the tempo up or down without affecting the pitch. - tweak the key up or down without affecting the tempo. I've found demo versions of one or two programmes which will do the trick, but the price to upgrade to the full versions means that I may as well buy the Tascam machine - if I can find one!! All/any help gratefully received as always.
Transcribe.exe fantastic tool!! change tempo without pitch, vice versa. it loops selected sections. Phase cancelling to eliminate vocals etc!!, and loads of other possibiliteis. Musebook metronome, is a handy desktop metronome

I use various finger techniques, some of which are quite aggressive. If you're making sounds you don't like, then its just down to refining your techniques till you start producing the sound that you're trying to achieve. It's all very well others suggesting how you should play, and its all valid, but in the end, its down to you and your technique. You gotta practise. Then you gotta practise some more!!
-
personally I hate the pick - i recon you can do exactly the same thing with the double thumbin' technique. Having said that, check out Antony Jackson. He's the man when it come to the plectrum!!!!
-
I've been playin a long time - and all my basses sound wicked in all situations!! Now isnt that annoying!!!

ooh erh...;0)

OK OK OK!!!! I got it sussed!!! This is a really excellent way to get used to your 5 string in a new way!! When you practice: read the stuff you have used in the past for practicing, and are semi familiar with. This means you're only half sight reading, as you've played it before. Do this in alternative positions using the 5th string as much as possible (be prepared to go back a few paces, cos this can do your head in a bit) :eg. If your in the key of 'G' 1 #, then anchor yourself on the 8th fret. Don't use open E if it comes up, but play it on the 5th fret 5th string. This is not about getting he best sound, it about familiarising yourself with the new possibilities of your 5 string bass. Try this idea, too, on tunes you already know. This is for practice only, so again, its nothing to do with good sounds, or convenient methods of playing the tunes. Looking constantly for alternative fingerings, other than the one's your used to is a great way of getting familiar we the 5 string, and a great way of improving your playing generally. That's it, try it, it works!!!
£15 posted - Let me know if you want it
if your sure it'll fit, I want it!! if you have black/white/black gloss, I would prefer that if you have it - thanks Let me know how you want to arrange it - I have a 'paypal' account if that helps! I might be interested in a Stingray 5 plate after this if it works out well
-
I just found out the Stingray plate will fit....excellent!!!
-
just though I'd add my 2 penny worth.....I have a SUB 4 which is passive! Believe it or not, it still sounds exactly like the Stingray, and astonishingly, it has more output!! It can't achieve those excessive highs the active one gets, but I think they're pretty unusable anyway - unless you're hard of hearing!! Great sounding bass, without any battery power, ............who would have though!!........I love it to death!
I've found a black-white-black one which was copied from a real white one before the guy in question decided to go for tortoiseshell - the original white one may be available but I don't think it would do the look of the bass any favours. As you might guess I am able to copy guards in any standard colours that are available so once you make a decision I should be able to help by using the template I keep around
how much for a black/white/black??
-
Any idea what finish you would want - I may have a spare pickguard around after making a copy for an EB Stingray.
the bass is black, so pretty well anything would look better than the crappy stock one. What have you got?? I was thinking maybe a black with a white edge, or white pearl.....not sure,....
I sold my Sub4 to poorcow, and I think he was toying with the idea of selling the black abalone plate I fitted? Worth a PM? Here's the pics - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?s=&sho...st&p=411498
saw the bass - yeah, much more cool with a real plate on it!!!
I'm certain that I got my Sub 4 scratchplate from WDMusic, but have just checked and they don't list them anymore. The advice that I got at the time was that the Stingray pattern pickguards would not fit, but I've just found a recent post on the ErnieBall forums that suggests the Stingray pattern will fit? Time to try one from WDMusic and see if it will fit? - he's a really helpful guy there.
Thanks ...I will.......cool pic by the way!!!....
