SOLD

just though I'd add my 2 penny worth.....I have a SUB 4 which is passive! Believe it or not, it still sounds exactly like the Stingray, and astonishingly, it has more output!! It can't achieve those excessive highs the active one gets, but I think they're pretty unusable anyway - unless you're hard of hearing!! Great sounding bass, without any battery power, ............who would have though!!........I love it to death!
  2.
I've found a black-white-black one which was copied from a real white one before the guy in question decided to go for tortoiseshell - the original white one may be available but I don't think it would do the look of the bass any favours. As you might guess I am able to copy guards in any standard colours that are available so once you make a decision I should be able to help by using the template I keep around
how much for a black/white/black??
  3.
Any idea what finish you would want - I may have a spare pickguard around after making a copy for an EB Stingray.
the bass is black, so pretty well anything would look better than the crappy stock one. What have you got?? I was thinking maybe a black with a white edge, or white pearl.....not sure,....
  4.
I sold my Sub4 to poorcow, and I think he was toying with the idea of selling the black abalone plate I fitted? Worth a PM? Here's the pics - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?s=&sho...st&p=411498
saw the bass - yeah, much more cool with a real plate on it!!!
  5.
I'm certain that I got my Sub 4 scratchplate from WDMusic, but have just checked and they don't list them anymore. The advice that I got at the time was that the Stingray pattern pickguards would not fit, but I've just found a recent post on the ErnieBall forums that suggests the Stingray pattern will fit? Time to try one from WDMusic and see if it will fit? - he's a really helpful guy there.
Thanks ...I will.......cool pic by the way!!!....
  6.
I changed the one on mine and the Stingray guards will not fit a Sub. There are quite a few places where you can get the Sub ones though.
any suggestions where I can get a SUB plate??...does anyone know if the OLP plates fit then???..........cheers
  7. Just got a Sub bass - great sounding bit of gear - this is passive and and still sounds like the Stingray!!! CRAP aluminum pick guard, looks like sh*t and because the screws are not countersunk they scrape the hand when your in slap mode. Does anyone know if the standard Stingray plate will fit these - I heard the OLP plate wont fit a Stingray, so I was wondering if the the 'SUB' is different again!! Anyone else changed the scratch plate - help us out - Cheers!!
  8. Dangleberry - isn't that a play on words.....DINGLEBERRY - we all know what that is, so there's your clue right there!!!!
  9. met a guy recently who bought a Stingray 5, and promptly returned it. Hated the sound, and insisted it sounded the same as a Sterling bass. He said the Stingray 5 and the Sterling use the same pre-amps and don't compare to the Stingray 4. He recons Ernie Ball has changed the pre amp now, and they're crap I personally have a Stingray 5 and have owned a 4 in the past. My SR4 was a 2 band early Ernie Ball with the old fashioned bridge and metal battery cover. To me, the SR5 3 band EQ with the select switch in the bridge position sounds exactly the same as my old SR4, with the added bonus of the other selections and the mid EQ control. Its a wicked wicked sounding bass. I don't see why Ernie Ball would want to change the sound of a bass that's already proved to be a winner. I have no experience of the Sterling. Do the have a different sound?? Are the new SR5 different? Do you think the Earlier SR5 sounds like the SR4, and the later ones come to that!? Whats going on - love to know what you guys have to say!!
  10. I have a late SR5 and installed an on/of toggle switch between the battery and Jack socket. This way I can go on stage and leave the bass plugged in, but flip the switch off when I'm not playing. Its like a 'standby' works brilliantly. I tried an LED too for a while, but the battery drained to fast - looked cool though...!
  11.
That may be true, but your original post title was extremely misleading! your actual question was "who plays a 5 string like a five string?"
oops......forgive me......!!
  12. oh...and to 'Whatnwhy' - still reads like a jibe to me!
  13. I think your all missing the point somewhat..... I'm still talking about reading technique!! If you're sight reading an up tempo piece, in G and you spot a high octave G (2 above the lowest), its a difficult jump to make without taking your eyes off the page, but starting G on the 8th makes it considerably easier. However, when you've been doing it for almost half a century on a 4 string its weird to use the 8th fret position. That's all. So I was looking for some reading material specifically to practice the five string. So far I'm just using the same old stuff but using new fingerings.................thats it folks!
  14. Warwick Corvette body is a lite bass with a brill sound - its definitely aback saver!
  15. one suggestion - the Gary Willis book. anyone got anything else???
  16.
you know in most cases, the 5th string is a lower one yes?
doh...really..?? Most tune their 5 bass with a lower B, but it is also quite common to go soprano with the hi C, although we weren't discussing that aspect of the 5 string.........pay attention! I was, at the beginning of this item, really thinking about reading techniques. When the notes shoot up the stave, its less of a task on a five sting if you position yourself appropriately on the B string, however, I was really just pointing out, that if you're on the 8th fret in the key of G, that, that wasn't actually a visa for over playing, just cause you're half way up the neck. You get it now?? any more queries as to my train of thought, feel free to try and insult me, no problem!
  17. mmm.....interesting... I think the fact is: basses with different amounts of strings require a a different 'mind set'. They're different instruments, and that's that. You gotta learn to play each of them according to their attributes. The one thing I'll never give up is playing my 4 string, its the the width between the strings. It feels wide, it feels big, and it feels like a bass. The restrictions in the overall scope is what makes it sound like a bass. Beyond five strings, i recon your getting into the realms of an obese guitar. Don't forget we're playing bass here. Generally the bass provides the bottom end groove, and so too much crap above a certain point calls for extreme virtuosity, and even then, it can all get a bit tiresome.......blah blah blah.......blah..
  18.
Im still fairly new to 5 string so yes, i do play it more like a 4 string. I think this is mostly due to me not learning many songs on it and so im already programmed to play then like a 4 string, no real advantage to changing right now. Also i dont feel the mid to upper notes on the low B have as much punch and clarity as playing them on the E string. Saying that i will use the B string more as i progress.
I use a Stingray5 - love the big full bottom end of the 'B' string all the way up the neck (to the octave anyway) - it reminds me of the wife!

    hi

.......but as 'doh' as a drummer! Baixo ( that's what they call it in Brasil! )
  20.
Its always been like that, regardless of style...The good ones DO get noticed.
innit tho'
  21.
Interesting - although the bass in use has a fairly limited application... If you are into your looping, I think there are a lot more interesting examples... try this for example - From our very own DM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlLEC1453-g
yep..now thats cool!!
  22.
Not sure if you all may have allready seen this as its not a new video - but i just love this clip... I would love to be able to play like this one day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-9wY57AZIs
not very high aspirations - should aim a little higher mate!
  23.
Stuff by Gary Willis is a good starter, I'd think.
Ill check him out - cheers!
  24. I agree with Oscar South - there are some frighteningly amazing young players out there - and frighteningly crap ones too. But the new young talent that is good, Is Good!!!!
  25. you know what i mean. When i got my 5 string (1 year ago, and I've been playing for more than 30), I realised I was just playing a 4 string with a few extra low notes. After getting my head round the visual confusion, it all seemed quite easy. I decided the other day, to really get into the 5th string. particularly when reading. For example, if your playing in 'G'. Instead of anchoring yourself to the 3rd fret as a starting position, I started on the 8th fret on the 'B' string. Jeez- what a mind f'ck. but no problems going up two octaves, with a new sense of security about knowing where you are without even a glimpse. Like to hear any suggestions for practicing exclusively for the five string. Got any suggestions on good books for reading practice and playing tips? Any thing else you got to offer, I'd like to hear. NB. I'm mainly talking about having the lower 'B' on the 5 strings....cheers......Shonks!!
