Now I think of it I had a Squier P special for a short while but never measured the neck. Didn't feel massive but could have been a P width I guess. I currently have a USA P deluxe with double jazz at the bridge end (all active, no passive switch) and I think that has a neck width somewhere between a jazz and a P (I have one each of those too, both passive though) and I'm only going on feel, not measured any of them.
Lock up I dont know..... We have a unloading and band equipment 'Storage Area'.... And the phone thing is a very good point! And as for playing for free, we are getting paid pretty well for it so alls well.
Excellent, maybe some of the headliners are asking for what they are worth rather than what they think they are still worth , spreads it round a bit more. I wasn't having a go, just a reply to the point about the £50 tickets and when you think of all the individuals in all the acts plus all the security/tech etc that have to be paid each day it can't go that far. I assume the food/merch stalls pay a fair whack for their pitches which will help put money in but then there is the hire of area where the event is held etc, the overheads must be pretty high. You can see why promoters for these kinds of events start getting twitchy if ticket sales are slow and they are only just into their break-even point. Hope it all goes well.

Other way round for me, he's putting in occasional extra notes at the dusty end that I never bothered with at jam sessions
Depends on where you are. For bar gigs in Milwaukee WI, $500.00 would be the absolute top of the scale. $400.00 is the most common pay check regarless of how many peices. Blue
At current exchange rate $400 = £235 which is less than £60 each for a four piece band before taking any equipment fees or other expenses into account. Pretty similar to a lot of pub gigs here but you would be unlikely to be asked to play much more than 2x45 or maybe 1x45 + 1x60 for that money here unless the venue was frankly taking the piss or you don't value yourself highly. The average standard of musicianship in the UK probably isn't quite as high as the US for bar/pub work either.

Opeth - Pale Communion, although apparently it's not supposed to be available yet.
fifty quid to see toploader !!!
Personally with those lineups I wouldn't go if they paid me fifty quid but it's all down to personal taste Realistically though, when you look at it there are 5 separate playing areas which all have to be set up, broken down and technically supervised during the playing days plus security etc. Then there are the 'big name' acts who won't be coming that cheap even if its Toploader or Happy Mondays . All in all for £50 a ticket my guess is there will be a good few acts who will be effectively playing for free.

Reliability. Can have great chops and be easy to play with but if you end up hunting for a dep every other week because of some crisis at home, work commitments etc it all goes out of the window.

But it's all scratched and dirty...
Interesting how the strings haven't been put in the nut grooves properly.
I noticed that too, I wondered if he was being ultra honest and had moved them to one side to show the scratches the roundwound E string had made in the rosewood fretboard. You still have to zoom in to see therm clearly though, in general looks in good nick.

I can see it appealing to a fair few people. Some don't feel comfy with a full scale neck so will appeal to those. Some might be put off a P bass because of the neck width so this will tick a box for them too, they get jazz neck with a P pickup (though I think some P specials have narrower necks too?). Will be interesting to hear it on P pickup only mode as many P specials with this P/J config are often cited as not being able to do an authentic P sound. Not sure how much influence the body shape has on tone, less than a lot would think would be my guess. Looks a good value workhorse at that price.

I prefer Joanne Shaw Taylor if I'm being honest, despite the fact I grew up in a town about 5 miles away from Bradford.

The one from the early stuff that always impresses me in terms of bass/vox together is All My Loving.

I'm not sure most people in bars/pubs in the UK actually want to hear four hour sets these days no matter how much the egos of the musicians concerned are convinced they could really entertain folks for that long to a good standard. The days of four hour sets are also the days of 2 or 3 channels to choose from on TV, no mobile phones and the only other likely distraction in the venue might be a dart board. Times change and people change with it.

It's that ugly the guy's having to wear 80's style shades to protect himself. Don't look at it son!

Another US P user here. I'd been using a 2003 US jazz as a main gigging bass for several years but joined a band over a year ago where a passive P fitted the covers played a little better. In the end got a US P in same colour as my jazz so they make a sort of matched pair. However the P is a bit older (2001) and one of a limited run to mark the P's 50th birthday. It seems very nicely put together and came with a cool case. I didn't pay anything like they are asking on eBay though! If you want to take the risk there are a lot of S/H P's at more sensible prices than new ones. Even new ones may require a bit of setting up which will add to the cost.

Reminds me of some of the dusty things that'd turn up in second hand music shops in the mid to late 80's like the ones in Jon's post #3. I didn't buy them then and I'm not starting now. The closest I came was a white Washburn XS-8 or something similar in name with a pointy headstock but I didn't keep that long either. Too many knobs and switches from what I recall. The little bastard has a touch of the Roland G77 about it without the extra 'midi handle'.

And of course there's always this from an an older thread... http://www.wikihow.com/Be-a-Bass-Player-in-a-Band To be taken with liberal pinches of salt....
He will be embarrassed when he realises you are all waiting around for him.
I bet he won't, many guitarists seem to think that is why they were put on the planet, so the rest of the world can wait for them to dazzle us See Marv's post #4. Is he ridiculously attached to a particular single guitar and soesn't carry a backup? Could a second guitar for the capo stuff be just set up in advance and pick it up when needed or is he using the capo on lots of songs and in different positions? Tbh I've seen seasoned pros wrestle with the damn things before now so it's not necessarily just this particular player.

I think I'm getting jaded, I'm starting to rate our wedding gigs on the quality of the buffet rather than anything musical at all. Last nights was a rather simple and sightly rustic affair comprising range of breads, cheeses and potatoes. It actually worked very well. As I said to our guitarist queuing behind me you can only take prawn vol-au-vants for so long.
I've played a couple of covers evenings recently where I haven't really had time to learn all the bass lines note for note. As long as you play something close enough and play all the right roots in the right places, noone will notice, I guarantee it!
This. It's a regular in our set. Last night I tried a few different subtle variations on what I've always understood to be the pucker line and tried to judge the audience reaction on any changes. Did they notice? did they bollox.
Great, let us know when it's on! Are you going to be using the Limelight Jazz??
And will they make you cover up the Fender logo? -
I had need to learn the bass line to 'I Shot The Sherrif' for a jam night pub band a while back, which I did - but unfortunately the rest of the band were unable to play the song as it is recorded here
My guess would be the other musicians were working off the Clapton version, I've found most jam/open mic'ers do.

Fair do's, she's probably sh*t at spewing blood in 8'' platform shoes. Each to their own. -
Nice of Rick Neilson to turn up and have a jam with you
As to last nights gig we opened the Progadelic festival at the Haberdashers Arms in Adbaston, Staffordshire.
