I knew of the Guild B301/302 but I stumbled upon the B402-A completely by accident. I instantly wanted one. About a month later, I got one. Amazing how these things happen sometimes.

Yes, I use Hartke strings. I'm usually able to buy triple packs off eBay for less than £20. They're pretty bright for nickels, not too rough and seem to last well. I don't use anything else nowadays.

It's not a bad thing. I'm in the middle of a bit of a lull myself. I now have all the Gibsons that I'm fully interested in. Dunno what to do now... I know - play the ones I currently have!

I recently used one of these to replace the jack socket on my Yamaha BB614, seems solid and no problems so far. You might have to cut off the cable grip (one of the ground connections for battery switching in active basses) depending on the position in the cavity and the amount of room you have. I had to.

I have only once taken a "spare" to a gig but it was more like an understudy - I was gigging a bass for the first time and because I had a hard time getting a suitably audible setting out of it and the amp in the practice room I was worried that a similar outcome might happen at the gig. Therefore I took a bass that was proven to work well on stage, in case difficulties arose at soundcheck. I needn't have worried, the bass performed excellently. I played the understudy at the next gig so that it didn't feel bad No spare basses for me in general. Taking a spare to the relatively small gigs I play makes me feel like a bit of a twat if truth be told, in the same way that wearing sunglasses indoors does. "Who does he think he is?" I always have a toolkit, I always have batteries, I always have strings. I'll get by. To answer the OP's question - it was set up to my liking, same standard 4 string tuning, just there to deputise in case the #1 bass wasn't cutting through.

I've seen systems like this before and all they serve to do is reinforce cliques. The site that springs to mind has recently moved to a "like only" type setup. People on there used to have competitions to see how -ve they could make someone, for fun.

Technician, definitely. Forewarned is forearmed. I don't like the plans being mucked about with at short notice, and surely improvisational jams are that phenomenon taken to extremes. That said, I'm getting better at recovering when someone throws me a curve ball, but at the moment I still get hit by them. In the face, usually.

I need to look at replacing the one in my HA3500 - it's really noisy (angry, grinding, grating kind of sound) when it starts from cold for about 30 secs then it calms down, but it's still a bit whirry. Of course you don't notice it when you're playing and you certainly don't notice it when a band is crashing and bashing all around you.

Quiet, then not so quiet! Started the year with no band, did a dep/help out thing in January then nothing for ages, apart from increasing my Gibson bass collection and embarking on some lessons - best thing I did in ages. Joined the Oxbow Lake Band in May and it's going really well, playing songs I enjoy with people I enjoy playing songs with. Had 4 gigs so far with at least 1 more before the end of the year (and one booked in January), revamped the band website, joined just too late to have any influence (or appear) on the band's recent recorded output, but looking forward to being actively involved in new material.

In what appears to be a common theme, I have never broken a string while playing. I broke a flatwound E string when I was fitting it because I used too long a scale and was trying to wrap the fat part around the tuner. It said "I'm not doing that" and promptly broke.

Yes, but flat refusing to even take a look? Pathetic, imo.

[/quote] Bunch of wusses - when I got my HA3500 the valve preamp was not giving any output, only the solid state one. Me and a mate fixed it ourselves - a resistor had burned out in the valve preamp circuitry. Replaced it and took the opportunity to replace the caps as well. The compressor control is on a stupid daughterboard which just relies on being in the right place relative to the tracks on the main board and we messed that up a little - ended up hard wiring it and it'll be all the stronger for it. Bottom line is though two ordinary guys fixed mine. I'm no amp tech.
