    Yeah, I think a matched pair makes more sense and I’ve used Nordys in many basses. Saying that, i have a single coil QP in my Tele bass and I prefer that I think to the Nordy 51P. And it was the DiMarzio Model J that Tony F put in his original PJ fretless. Hmmmm! Anyone have a handy link to the measurements for the 70s pickup position? I think that’s what I want for this.

    I have an American Special Precision which was converted to fretless by a previous owner. It’s a lovely job actually - nice big slab of ebony. Anyway, I’d like to get a jazz pickup put in it, to make it a bit of a Tony Franklin clone. Any suggestions for pickups? I think it’s the standard American split coil that’s in there, so is there a good J pickup to pair with that, or do I buy a matching PJ set? Likely to get a 3 way switch, so want pickups to be well balanced.

    This is the hum-cancelling split coil version of the Nordstrand 51P. They say it "delivers all of the same great vintage tone, but allows for a quieter operation via its hum-canceling split coil." https://nordstrandaudio.com/collections/4-string-51-precision-bass-pickups/products/51p4s-hum-cancelling Perfect condition. Retails at around £120 in the UK I think. REDUCED TO £60.

    Well, I had someone do it for me, so not sure. :-) I can certainly suggest that. I guess my question is - is it reasonable to expect the volumes to be similar for all settings where there are 2 coils being used?

    Stingray purists look away.... I have a 2001 Stingray H. I swapped in a Norstrand MM4.2 and the John East 3 band MMSR preamp. Major improvements, but after trying a Stingray HH I decided to take the plunge and get another pickup and a 5 way switch installed. So, I now have an additional Nordstrand and a 5 way switch, wired up to do the same thing as the standard HH - neck pickup, inner coils, both pickups, outer coils, bridge pickup - and it sounds great. BUT I’m surprised by the difference in volume between the 2 single coil settings and the other 3 settings. Since (for example) soloing the bridge pickup is essentially its 2 coils in parallel, I’m not sure why choosing a coil from EACH pickup should be quieter? Or am I misunderstanding something? I don’t think the stock HH was like this. It’s no biggie, just curious. Anyone any ideas?

    This is a 2014 USA Music Man Stingray 4 HH with an ash body, rosewood fretboard and tortoiseshell scratchplate. (I also have a black scratchplate which will come with it). Perfect condition, there are no marks or dings at all other than some very light marks on the scratchplate that you can’t really see. It will come with the original hardshell case which is also in perfect condition. This bass gives you the classic Stingray tone but a whole lot more as well, because of the 2 humbuckers, the 5-way selector switch and the 3 band active EQ. 5-way selector switch gives you bridge humbucker, inner single coils, both humbuckers, outer single coils or neck humbucker. In Edinburgh but can ship. Retails around £1800 I believe.

    Andy and I just exchanged my Precision + some cash for his Stingray HH. All went totally smoothly. Great bass, lovely bloke. All good!

    Bootros - that's quite a story! Well done on getting it back. It's the black/maple one I had too. Marc S - I do wonder if the very same thing might happen with me, if I were to get my hands on one! Still, it's not stopping the GAS altogether. I used to live in London - just as well I don't now. :-)

    Yeah, I like PJs too. I have an American P at the moment, but like you, when playing often wish for the J in there. Could get one added I guess, but probably better to sell and buy a PJ. Saying all that, I really don't need one either, I have this (slightly different, and lovely) PJ that I had made for me by Chris McIntyre here in Edinburgh.
