Well I'm up for going if anyone else (I'm thinking Pinball here!) wants to go.

+10 for Reaper. Gotta support a company that doesn't want to put restrictive DRM on their software. Plus every time I want to do something in it I google it to see if Reaper can handle it. 100% hit rate so far, it's immense once you dig deep but you can use it at a "GarageBand level" if you want. That's not knocking GarageBand btw, just a statement about how GB lets you get on with making music.

He is indeed based in Bristol and I've got a lesson booked with him on Friday I checked our some of his videos and he is a very good player. I would have gone for Jon over in Cardiff but getting over there in good time for a lesson at any decent time of day would be very hard.

Haha! That doesn't actually look all too bad... a touch of Steampunk in there. Somewhere. I think.

It's my birthday on Friday... anyone?

This but with chrome hardware would be lovely too.

Here's mine. Some of it styled on my Tanglewater.

This is more or less how I got my recording setup together if this helps: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/176553-mini-guide-to-starter-gear-for-recording-cheaply/

Left the band - another door opens though

It sounds like your new project could be interesting. Your mate obviously thinks you can work well together if he's asked you after seeing your gig. You could end up working on some very interesting stuff! -
I find my Rockbass Corvette has a deeper growl than my Bass Collection SB315 (my only other with twin J single coil pups). An example (which is still in the mixing stage so is far, far from perfect but the bass sound I'm after is there at the beginning): http://soundcloud.com/whisky-river/badly-parked-cars

Here's the bass, leaning against my Ashdown touring rig. And I've also got a recording of it. The levels and mix on this one aren't finalised yet but you can hear the bass at the beginning quite well. It's got a nice deep growl to it which I like. It's going through Ampeg SVX (the B15 valve amp I think). http://soundcloud.com/whisky-river/badly-parked-cars

Completely off-topic but that Shiba in your avatar is gorgeous mate. My bro and sister-in-law (whom I live with) have two. The latest addition came last night and he's just a bundle of fluff.
Could you not argue that the review section of BGM is there, in part, to look at gear that's hard to come by, as opposed to gear most stores will have to test for yourself?
Hmm, that's a fair point.
-
Cheers, I'll drop him a note and will see where he's based now.

Hopefully BGM are changing things, especially after the positive response their editor gave to the feedback on here. I do feel that magazines like BGM, and also Top Gear (as mentioned above) tend to review expensive luxury basses (and cars) more for the reviewer's own benefit than the readers' benefit. Kinda like a "hey this is a good gig, I just get to play with very expensive toys all day and say how good they are" attitude. More of the £300 SUB bass reviews would be great. Would you buy a £7,000 bass on a magazine review? Or would you spend a day with the luthier/manufacturer instead to make sure it was a worthwhile investment? I believe that a fair amount of bass players are likely to be in the £200-£1200 price range for basses. That's quite a range but still below what I believe to be the average price for all of the basses reviewed in a single issue of a magazine. And I think people are more likely to buy a £300 bass based on a review than they would a considerably more expensive one. Having say that, remember that even if BGM started taking on all of our comments immediately it would take time to set up group tests, write them up and get them published so any new ideas could possibly be 2, maybe 3 issues away from when they were incepted.
There ya go! Isn't it the wrong way round though?.. Thanks for the pic though, that's a cracking looking rig though, bet it sounds awesome too Eude
Yeah, they're stacked the wrong way round but Ashdown put a bulkier handle on the cab so the amp wobbles when it's on top of it. Bit of a noob mistake imo but no big deal. It does indeed sound awesome, just so much fuller than the single speaker.
Just don't turn it up too loud - ya might get beer in the little Roland!
Hah yeah, our guitarist's main amp is broken so he's going through that little Roland at band practice. I do feel like I've brought a gun to a knife fight but I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts! Mind you, he can cycle to the pub with it all and I have to load up my boot and drive even though the pub's 5 mins walk from my house.

Here ya go, a nice pic of my rig with my Rockbass.
-
Sorry I should have added that I was referring to playability mainly. Sound wise I preferred the squire to the MIM. Can't compare either to the jazz of course as it's a different sound
-
I've played a squire precision, a MIM precision and a USA jazz. The squire was almost on par with the USA made bass and the MIM was poor. I was well impressed with the squire.
Sorry not trying to hijack the thread but lozz could you tell me what the flat setting is for the orange terror ? Sure I read something you said about it the other day but can't find it now ! ta
It might be the same as my ashdown hybrid amp in which case it would be bass and mid at 9 o'clock and treble at 3 o'clock so I've heard.

Whats the best Jazz Bass I can buy for under £300
Mornats replied to matybigfro's topic in Bass Guitars
Yeah, they're Overwater's budget basses. Judging by the quality of the £600 J4s I would hope that it's very decent indeed, even at that price. -
Thanks SpaceChick, he certainly comes recommended! I was thinking of taking lessons every 2-3 weeks to give me enough time to try stuff out in practice in between so I don't think the traveling would be too much of an issue really.

I've found a couple online so far - any of you guys had any experience with these? http://www.bristolbasstuition.co.uk http://www.bristolrockguitar.co.uk/

Lol, no pics of Three Kings High but I did get a flyer... I'll grab a pic of my Ashdown stack and my Overwater and Rockbass soon though.
