We all know my opinion of Janek as a player-I take lessons off him whenever he is over and I have jammed with him on stage,so obviously I've got a more biased opinion, but I really do dig his music. That's what made me want to take lessons with him initially. I get what Silddx is saying, but I do think that Janek is a lot more melodic and compositionally sound than similar players like Hadrien Feraud or Tony Gray-they are great players but their albums are harder to listen to,I think. I think that Janek has a couple of tunes that have the potential to become modern 'standards'. Maybe,he isn't fully formed as a composed just yet,but he's definitely on the way.Live, him and his band have great energy and are just killing-I think, way better than on record. I'm a big Zappa fan (30+ albums),but do think that, although there is a lot of great music there, there is also quite a bit of fluff.I think that's the same for a lot of artists though, especially those as prolific as Zappa.
I agree with you on the Hadrien Feraud subject but i would say Tony Grey's compositions and sense of melody are both better than Janeks (IMHO ) Chasing shadows is one of my favourite albums by any musician, bassist or otherwise. as has already been said, i feel that alot of Janeks tunes are vehicles for soloing rather than tunes in their own right...having said that i do have a soft spot for circles

This week we had Steve in to do a masterclass on both his use of Loops and other technology in real time manipulation, and on the business side of music. Was an incredibly instructive afternoon (im thinking about giving the whole looping idea a whirl at some point soon), we all enjoyed the loops session, found the business workshop really helpful and Steve was one of the nicest, most down to earth and clued up musicians ive ever met. To top it off he then played a solo set at the music divisons november gig! Top bloke

IMO technique is a tool, nothing more, nothing less. If the music/your ideas require a higher level of technique, then yes, it is very important. If the music/your ideas dont require a high level of technique then no, its not of particular importance. For example, to execute Dream Theater bass parts (thinking instrumedley, metropolis part 1) with fluidity, a high level of technique and dexterity is required. Wheras with Jamiroquai tunes, a fantastic sense of groove is far more important than raw technical prowess.

Been down to Cardiff today to collect my latest addition, Matt's 97 Warwick Streamer LX6. Matt took a chance on me financially, trusted me and thus enabled me to get my mitts on one of the nicest warwick basses ive ever seen. I'm one happy chappie and would do business with Matt again without hesitation. Buy and sell to this bloke with confidence people

Why would you add overdrive or distortion to an alembic bass?
funkypenguin replied to jazzyvee's topic in General Discussion
+1 So figure out whether you like the sound of distortion on an alembic to begin with and then figure out what you like best.
+1 -

Not much help to you but a bump is a bump.

Bump for a great bass and a great bloke. I still can't believe this is here at this price. Good luck Ben
Cheers guys its one of the best 6 strings, both for sound and playability, ive ever come across. if it wasnt for a new bass incoming i wouldnt be selling. make me an offer someone

There are some great basses made here in the UK which are as good if not better than some of our American friends for a fraction of the price
+1, i think the UK luthiers are among the very best in the world. I do love the sweetness in the top end that the Fodera preamp gives, and they do sound gorgeous soloed.....but most of the time when i hear them in a band setting the sound is far too polite
