1. I guess this HAS to be a wrong 'un, but.. yeah I know, too good to be true .. how can I tell? What should I ask? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rickenbacker-JetGlo-...id=p3286.c0.m14
 2. Thanks guys. Yeah on digging around I found comments about the 4001 neck not being designed for roundwounds, which is what I use, but that loads of necks have no issue with the extra tension. What is the neck profile like? I played a 4003 a few years ago (briefly) and found the neck, what I would call chunky.. more of a D section, like my Thunderbird. I must admit I prefer a nice thin neck, like a Jazz. But it's the sound I love! And the looks, that's what's driving me. I'm guessing this guy has got his description wrong - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rickenbacker-4001-ba...id=p3286.c0.m14 In the text he gives a serial number that does check out as made in 1990 so surely that can't be a 4001?
 3. Hey Adee, that is very sweet looking and it's a bass like that which is tempting me to go for a "normal" Ric.. so Knowing not a lot about Rics, can I ask for a bit of advice on the 4001 and 4003 basses. What is the major difference between them? Is the 4003 a better beast for the money? I have heard horror stories of the 4001 neck doing a pretty good banana impersonation as the years go on, but did they they put twin truss rods into the 4001? Do they sound comparable? Any info to help me would be cool. I think if I can get a reasonably priced used bass that I can modify to a stealth style, then whoopie!!! I have snooped on evilbay and seen some interesting 4001s. Thanks Mark
 4.
Hi I have always had a precision and a few months ago, i bought a second one, a cij 62 re issue, which is standard, except i replaced the pick up with a usa vintage style one There appears to be a sort of unpleasant overtone? to the notes, the primary note is there, but there is an underlying sound to the note. It sounds like a cross between a hiss and fret buzz Its not the amp because it happens on other amps, and doesnt happen on the same amp with different guitars. its not overloading the preamp Its not fret noise, and it happens on open and fretted notes the pick up is not too close to the strings according to the fender spec. If anything it could be closer I cant see anything wrong with the wiring The logical next step is to swap out the pick up/pots and caps but i will have to do that from my other bass which is a bit of a fag. Before I do thaty, anyone got any bright ideas?
Not that I know an answer, but a question that I'm sure will help is did you get that noise problem BEFORE you changed the PUP??
 5.
what does the VU meter on the ashdown amps do? im i right in saying if it goes into the red, it means to turn it down a bit or the speaker will blow?
I think the primary objective is to look a bit retro and cool. I usually like to have my input stage just tipping into the red when I play hard, but I think to be honest if your needle isn't jammed up hard against the red all the time then you'll be fine. M
 6.
John (I'm Only Dancing) has a fantastic melodic bassline too, I can't believe no one has mentioned it so far! The runs in the chorus are very McCartney-esque +1 to this thread
You beat me to it! I have always loved that bass line Hang On To Yourself is one of my all time fav Bowie tracks, and of course Laughing Gnome Oh, and huge kudos to Trev Bolder's monster sideburns What a pair of chops!
 7.
There was somebody on Jools a couple of months back playing a 4004 that had been painted up to look like a Redneck. Did the Blackstar have an ebony board or a regular board painted black?
Good point. According to here - http://www.rickbeat.com/modelslibrary/4003...pcblackstar.htm It's an ebony black, maple fingerboard. And further data suggests a painted maple board. The Redneck and Tuxedo versions were made in seriously short numbers.
 8.
It sounds flippin' great. The massive amount of leftover cash from not buying a real Rick is nice, too. This one came with no TRC, so I had to find something to fit! That bass on eBay is overpriced, btw.
Yeah, I've just been trawling through the awesome Rickenfaker section on the site.. and seen the beaut that joegarcia got his hands on. Also noted the fact that the Tokai is too pricey. Looks the part though It's that Ric sound that I want as well as the looks. Maybe it's project route time. But I do like the look of this original.. plenty of pics too. 9.
70s Japanese bass + fake TRC off some weird website + auroraproject.co.uk scratch plate, custom cut to match the existing one. Easy.
Disgraceful!! What does it sound like?? I've just seen a 'faker' on the bay, wonder if that would work as a donor? 10.
Is this what you're looking for? Black Ricky P
Not a Blackstar, but very much like Dangerboy's bass and I do really like that.
 11.
I just cheated http://img145.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf2589fv0.jpg I do like a bit of chrome with my black, though.
That IS really nice and it would be the route I take if I give up hope. Was it easy to get replacement parts that fit OK? I've had scratchplate issues in the past before.
 12.
just out of interest, how much money do you have to get one?? btw i like your spelling of wah in your sig
What spelling... ahem Pricewise, I dunno but I'm not oozing cash that I can just go mad.
 13. The idea of a Jetglo with black bits is a distinct possibility. I've seen black truss rod covers on the bay, it would just be getting the other stuff. I just love the ebony board on the Blackstar too, maye a can or car spray paint... Never had a Ric before y'see and I thought if I'm gunna do it, then do it right. It's the deep pockets that's the worry! Mine are usually so shallow, money never stays in them! And the US $ getting stronger too, damn it all. M
 14. Afternoon all OK, so I am suffering from a terribly painful GAS attack, that and I am in awful denial having missed out on picking up a Ric Blackstar a few years back. The urge for one of these is now becoming an obsession. I want! So basically, does anyone know of a Ric 4003SPC Blackstar up for sale? Have you seen one lurking? Know of someone that needs to clear some gear? It looks like I missed one on the evilbay a couple of months back.. (bloody missus wanting to go on hols.. mumble mumble). I would really appreciate if anyone chances across one, online or where ever to let me know. And yes I know, rocking horse poop would be easier to find. Thanks, you’re all really quite lovely (except for smelly at the back). Mark
 15.
Possibly!
Find out who he is, follow him, watch what mistakes he makes, and then save yourself the bother I like logic me
 16. Blimey! That is a bit heafty on the price. The euro exchange rate being so low in the gutter doesn't help. I have a used Black T'bird I bought 4 or 5 years ago and really like it. It is my chosen bass when I play live (dodgy covers band doing decidely MOR stuff right now!). It's a big full sound, with yards of sustain. Fat C profile neck that I find very useable. I hate that bloody neck dive though!! Saying all that, I am currently loving the Jap Fender P bass I bought off the EvilBay.. ohh yummy I do like that sound
 17.
I was there on the friday, though that does sound like me! I can't remember seeing you though.. EDIT: i am actually sending them an email now.
Yeah I was def there on Thursday.. Maybe you have a sort of doppleganger who is like a whole day ahead of everything you do?
 18.
I was at Vintage and Rare ............ The guys there and the nice lady where more than helpful and friendly!
Mmm.. there was quite a cute girl working in there on Thursday, getting all excited about the colours of some pedals they'd just been shipped. M.
 19.
Yeah after i'd been in the bass cellar i went into another shop accross the road, looked very retro, there was a p bass that had apparently been owned by sid vicious behind the counter along with a guy wearing a hawaiian shirt with greased back hair, can't remember what the shop was called though. That was a cool place, went in there, tried out a precision, had a short jam with a guy playing guitar, the guy working there asked what i thought and i told him i didn't like it much, wrong pickup placement and i couldn't get used to it and all that and he was very nice about it all and was like yeah come back in and try stuff out whenever you like mate, really nice bloke and a pretty cool shop. That's what they should ALL be like.
Hey, when were you in there? I did a tour of Denmark St last week on Thursday and when I wandered down the back of that store there was a guy playing a P bass if I remember and another guy sat by him with a six string. It was just before the rain tipped down, sorta early afternoon? I was there with my daughter, dragging her into all the stores I had silly pointy boots on, black jeans and spiky black hair. I looked at that bass that Sid supposedly owned. I'm no expert, but I really don't recognise it as one he obviously used. I like the unyellowed sellotape holding the jack in place. That's obviously from the 70's M. Oh and in Bass Cellar, there was a guy trying out Mark Bass gear and one of the assistants was sort of being helpful. I was pretty much ignored, even though I was making unsubtle cooing noises about a Ric hanging up!
 20.
Unless it's totally knackered I'd buy it at that price. The manual can be downloaded here. Andy
Thanks for the link Andy. Now it's playtime M.
 21. Anyone used a Behringer BASS V-AMP?? I've just been lent one with the option of buying it for £30. No instruction manual with it tho, and I'm just a simple soul and there's only one knob I generally twiddle with, so this looks a bit time consuming to set up etc. I'll give it a try over the next few days, but am just interested in a bit of subject feedback M.
 22.
Thanks very much for that. I shall look into that tomorrow and see if they can accommodate me. Cheers for your help.
Lemme know how it pans out. I like to know if my recommendations are worthy!
 23. Ok folks. So as guessed by bassicinstinct, it was supplied by a company called Silverstone Amp Cover based in Coventry and I found them on eBay. My contact has been with Shaun Dunk - [email protected] I supplied dimensions by borrowing the dimensions form that Roqsolid use on their website - http://www.amplifiercoversonline.com/dimensions/diagrams.htm (click on the appropriate cabinet/head style and it opens a dimensions form. I filled that in, did a screen dump and sent that as a jpg image of my dimensions) The material used is about 4mm thick (but I can't measure it properly) The cover cost £28.00 P&P £5.50 paid via Paypal. It took just over a week to arrive from placing my order. Please can you mention my name, Mark from Bournemouth, as i said I would recommend him if I was happy with the cover, which of course I am. Hope that helps Mark PS should I move this review as such to a more appropriate part of the forum?
 24.
Any idea where I'd track the maker down? Is the company called Silverstone?
Give us a couple of hours to get home and I'll let you have more precise details, email contact etc. If I can get my camera to work I'll post a pic too. Mark
 25. Apols for not being able to recount all the details now.. but age and rock n roll have screwed my memory! I was also originaly going to get an Ashdown cover.. as and when they actually brought summat out, but I already have their covers for my mini cabs and they are just the thin standard cover which doesn't protect from knocks very much and for the price are not very good value. I think it cost me about £28. It also comes with a little badge with the word Silverstone and a Union Jack stuck to a bottom corner, which suits my Ashdown nicely.
