  1. I'm in a similar situation but specifically after Jazz bass. I've narrowed it down to the Squier CV 70s Jazz or the Sire v5 .... or the Sire v7. The flamed maple necks on the v5s are gorgeous! Next v5 delivery into Thomann is due at the end of may, Andertons quoted November. I'm pretty torn to be honest! Any body have any wise words between those specific models?

  3. I don't need another one .... I don't need another one.
  4. Recommendation for a J to pair with it?
  5. Ive been playing round with the EQs on my line6 helix but its not doing anything for me. The fundamental tone im after just isn't there, there is no bringing it out. At least not at my EQ skill level!
  6. Been continuing with research. It is so difficult to cut through the marketing and sketchy YouTube reviews. Nordstrands marketing is particularly fascinating: "this combination produces a vibrational luster that is resonant of all the best aspects of precision-style playing" If anyone can get an understanding about what the pickup design is aiming to achieve from that then hats off to you! YouTube is no better. You never really get a grip of what your listening to. Different basses, amps, recording techniques. That all said, I think the EMG + J-Retro combination may be what gets me closer to what I am hoping to achieve. Combination of descriptions from people on forums and YouTube seem to match up. Got room for 2 9v batteries in my reggie Hamilton so could go for the extended headroom and run both pickups and pre off both batteries.
  7. Yeah, obviously I am not expecting miracles, The P pickup is always going to be a compromise. The J pickup is also in the 60s position rather than the 70s so its is all going to be a bit of a compromise. The P pickup is in the P sweet spot which is a few cm closer to the bridge than on most Jazz basses. For that reason, a traditional jazz scratchplate won't cover the P pickup route/screw holes. Unless I get a replacement scratchplate made which I guess is an option. General recommendations on the internet are EMG and Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders. EMGs are active which doesn't suit me as I already have a preamp installed. Not sure on the QPs, nothing on Youtube is screaming Marcus Miller to me about them. When I say Marcus Miller, I just mean modern. I'm never going to sound like Marcus! But its a good reference point.
  8. Ive come full circle. Back in my youth I was really into my hifi Marcus Miller tone. I has a jazz bass fitted with DiMarzio Ultra J pickups and a Sadowsky preamp. Unfortunately I long since moved it on. I cant stretch to a new bass so I am looking for pickups to drop into an existing PJ jazz bass. Can anyone recommend a P pickup to pair with a Ultra J bridge pickup or A PJ set that will get me closer to that Marcus Miller sound? The bass has a John East J-Retro fitted. Can't stretch to changing that. I'll be back in 6 months when I want to swap out my hifi pickups for the excellent DiMarzio Area PJ set i currently have in.
  9. Photos of hardcase:
  10. Would £450 + shipping interest anyone? Shipped in official Ernie ball musicman hardcase. Merry Christmas!
  11. Happy to listen to reasonable offers, got my eye on a jazz so this needs to go!
  12. Eagerly looking forward to the android app!
  13. Thanks! Wanna buy it? 😁
  14. As expected, the bass i was after sold quickly! Going to leave this for sale for now, see if anything crops up!
  15. Here are the colours in the running from @LukeFRC's fantastic pdf. Many thanks for this Luke, really useful tool. I'm thinking Aged Vintage White is going to take it. Aged Vintage White: Aged Shell Pink: Sonic Blue: Surf Green
  16. Thanks for the heads up. What's the logic behind the darker primer coat?
  17. What a fantastic idea! Thanks for sharing. I'm currently leaning towards vintage white .... that'll change a few times before I order the lacquer.
  18. For sale as there is a stingray 4h sale on here that i like to look of and need to raise funds! Wouldn't even think of moving it on for any other reason. I took this in a partial trade for a stingray 4HH and I must say, there isn't a gap in quality. Nicely worn in. The neck has some discolouration where its been played alot (which i really dig!). Doesnt affect playability. Strings are dull worn on roundwounds which again I appreciate is an aquired taste! I was always intending to get round to putting some flatwounds on but the rounds in this case where close enough! Comes with a musicman hard case. If you want to pick up without the hard case that can be negotiated but I will insist on shipping it in the hardcase. Happy to deliver or meet half way if that works. Collection is subject to any government restrictions in place. Any questions, please feel free to ask.
  19. Why do I feel like I now need to put my ray34 up for sale 😍
  20. The perfect passive sister for my reggie Hamilton jazz. Wish I hadn't of just started a build project for a passive jazz! GLWTS
  21. I didnt mention how colour blind i am in my OP did I? Funny, I've craved a fiesta red jazz for years but now its coming round to it, its not even on my hit list!
  22. Insomnia + Pay Day = time to start a new build! In truth, I haven't built a bass in 8 years (where has the time gone?!) but its been on my mind for a long time to do another and it seems like the opportunity has arisen to get started! As I don't currently own a passive jazz bass, and jazz basses have always been my thing, seems logical to build a Jazz. I figured I had best start a thread for the many questions I will have for the experts. I had thought about being very particular and building as close of a replica to a specific bass as possible but I've decided against that. I am going to have the the 60s in mind but I'm not going to worry about making sure everything is period correct. I haven't decided on "relicing" yet. If I do, it will be very light. I'll definitely be going for nitro lacquer, I'd love a bass that ages gracefully. I have a Neck and a Body on the way, and I have a wiring loom and some other bits and bobs knocking around too. I think the only major purchase left is pickups. More on that to follow. So the first major decision is .... colour! I was thinking vintage white but having just been browsing manchesterguitartech and I'm now torn between 4 options. Happy to hear your opinions! Sonic Blue: Sea Foam Green Shell Pink Vintage White So that's enough to start of with, next update will be when the parts start showing up I guess!
  23. It is a great idea! I do a similar thing with a headphone amp on my pedal board. Run two cables up to my bass to feed my in ears. Great way to work in my opinion.
  24. Traded. Thanks for all the interest!
