1.
Is there no way to go back to the luthier with it and explain things to him..? He should know if here's anything amiss and how to fix it. Has this always been like this since you got it from him, or has ti been good up to now, but something has changed..?
Yeah it's been like this the whole time. I could, but he's miles away and would involve a very long car journey or postage, and I CBA with either to be honest
This was my thought as soon as I read "new neck". It would be easy to measure the bridge position and no luthier is so perfect that they don't let an occasional slip through.
True. The intonation is a lot better since I lowered the bridge pickup though. The tuning is still up and down though.
You mentioned adjusting the height of the bridge pickup, but didn't mention the neck pickup. It might be worth lowering it 2mm to match the change you made to the other and see if there's any improvement. It's free and reversible, so it can't hurt to try.
I should have said, I checked that one and it's 4-5mm, the bridge one has been lowered to match it
 2.
Have you got good output from the bass, and is the volume all the way up?
Yes all ok there
It seems to me that if you tune, then it goes out after a short time, the nut slots may be a wee bit on the tight side & gripping. Consider a pass or two of a file to give a smidgen of more width, and make sure the bottom of the slot is cut clean with an angle down toward the head with a good witness point. G.
Yeah? Maybe I'll give that a try but I'm not confident with that sort of thing
 3.
What kind of bass is it, is it a hollow body?
Solid, fender styley
 4. It's definitely not the tuner. No problem on my other bass. I should say, just for total clarity, that this isn't a bad bass, it's great, but this issue is really annoying, and there are a couple of other niggles as well (all mentioned above)
 5.
Also, do you trust the tech? Brass nut badly cut perhaps? Schallers are pretty good btw, doubt it's them.
The nut height is great. The spacing is an issue (the string spacing at the nut is quite off on the G, by 0.5mm which doesn't sound like a lot but feels like a lot) but can't see that affecting this issue. I've heard that schallers are good but these feel so... clunky. Not at all like the tuners on my other bass which are nice and smooth, no idea what make they are though. Got a feeling they're Gotoh
 6.
OK, taking a step sideways... what kind of tuner are you using? If it's a headstock tuner, the battery might be on the way out.
It's a korg pitchblack, fresh battery
 7.
How's the pickup height? So many times I've seen it cause tuning issues when too high. Is the bridge in the right place for the new neck?
The pole were only 2mm under the strings on the bridge pickup so I've lowered them to 4mm under and it's definitely helped a little. But lowering them further doesn't seem to help so I've left them at 4mm. I like a nice meaty bridge tone, that might be a bit low for me but there's always the volume knob I would think the bridge location is fine, the bass was put together by an excellent luthier so can't see that being a problem
 8.
I usually put a tiny blob of lip balm (e.g. Lipsyl) in the nut slots to stop them snagging. Having said that, it does sound like a duff string. Do you use flats by any chance!
Nope, daddario nickel rounds. Wouldn't lip balm deaden the sound? Already the E string is much deader than the rest even when I just fit new strings. No problem on my other bass with these strings, it's definitely the bass.
 9.
Does it have a bolt-on neck? If so check that the screws are done up tight.
No problem here, all the bolts are nice and snug.
 10.
A tip that may help; give each string a good press down at the bridge anchoring point to make sure there is a clean angle. Whenever I had had an issue with strings slipping out of tune (if this is strings, of course), doing this sorts it right out.
I've tried this with the nut and bridge, didn't help, but thanks for the suggestion!
 11.
The usual suspects are: Duff strings String windings around the tuning head either crossed over or there's too few winds Pickup too high so the magnets mess with the vibration Nut needs some pencil lead in it Tuners need tightening or the gears have slipped or worn Good luck, should be fixable with some trial and error and perhaps pro help.
I tried a different set of the same strings as i always use the same ones, and it's the same with the new ones. I tried the pencil lead but the nut is brass, it doesn't seem to come off when I draw in the slots! When I had the neck made, I asked for hipshot USA as I had the money for those at the time, but the luthier convinced me to go with schallers and I really don't like them at all so I'm a bit gutted that I paid out for them. I would like to change them but can't afford it right now. I should have stuck to what I wanted
 12.
Are we talking really noticeably out of tune, or just a couple of cents drift on the tuner?
To me it's noticably out, although the tuner is back and forth all the time, it's hard to tell what's what
 13.
Have a read through this. It may help. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/204518-help-my-bass-wont-stay-in-tune/
Thanks, I'll have a look through
 14.
Tried some different strings?
I always use the same strings, but I've tried a different pack, same again. This bass doesn't have the original neck on it and it was always a bit annoying tuning-wise but this is something else.
 15. I have this bass that I really like for several reasons - light weight, playability, tone. But something about it drives me absolutely insane to the point I'm considering selling it. It's an absolute nightmare to tune. I thought it might be my tuner, but my other bass (which is heavy and doesn't quite play as nicely) has not got this issue at all, strike the string, tune it up, 5 seconds work, no problem. But this one, argh! I strike the string and it's flat, strike again without touching the tuning key and it's bloody sharp, up and down all the time, I turn the key to make the note flatter and tuner reads it going sharper, vice versa. Intonation is just as annoying, and even when I think it's in tune according to 10-15 minutes with the tuner (not even kidding) it still doesn't sound right. What the hell is wrong with this thing? I don't like the tuners, I already know that much but it's not just them as the note just wavers around without me even moving those. Waaaaah, does anyone have any ideas?
 16.
Out of curiosity what did you trade it for?
Sorry mate I totally missed this. It wasn't a bad bass that I traded it for, but it really wasn't what I was looking for and I never bonded with it. A Warwick corvette standard. I knew as soon as I saw it that I didn't want to go ahead with the trade, but I stupidly felt guilty and didn't want to be uncool and mess the guy around.
 17. Thanks for the input guys, very much appreciated
 18. Hey guys I've always wanted to learn guitar properly - I play a bit (know the basic chords etc) and have tried a few times to improve but always get a bit frustrated and sell my guitar! Firstly - do you think at 34 I'm too old to really learn? I know it's much easier to learn an instrument as a kid. Then, if the general consensus is that maybe I could give it another go, I'd need a guitar! What to get? Definitely electric, preferably hard tail but don't mind a trem (no FR's though, they confuse me!) and something with a nice slim neck. Budget £150 really, happy with new or used. I've seen the ibanez GSA60 and like the look and sound of that, anyone got experience with those? Thanks in advance

 22. I really like my DSL strap. 2.5" wide, leather, padded, was about £35 on eBay EDIT: this one - http://www.dslstraps.com.au/product/premium-straps/padded-garment-blackblack/
 23. I had one, thought it was okay. Sold it. Picked up another about five years later, thought it was terrible. Sent it straight back.
