1. OOOOOH! Nice looking Jazz - Ive heard good things about the Tokai Jazzers. If you dont mind me asking, what did it set you back?
2. This is My Rig: Hartke 3500 Amp with the preamp tube upgraded to the 12ax7M tube, with an Aphex Aural Exciter in front of it. All run into a Hartke 410XL cab (without the tweeter). This has been my main gigging rig for the last 3 years, it has never even given me a peep of trouble. Sure, the cab is heavy and my back is not enjoying it, but it does have a superb sound that never seems to fail to impress live. The Aphex just seems to make it sound bigger than I expected, ad before I got the 410 cab I too was thinking "ill whack a 1x15 in thwere with it later" - Ive never needed to. If you are in or around berkshire or London this month and next, ive got a few gigs coming up with Natalie, and would be happy for you to come and have a little play with my rig before/after the show if you like. Standing in the crowd will give you a good representation of what the amp can do live too.
3. Come on people, lets keep this civilised - we are better than this!
4. Tom - Everytime I see your Shuker I get butterflies in my stomach!
5. Stuart - I have every faith in your books mate, the ones ive had before are spot on and I would not hesitate buying a transcriptions book from you. Simon Merrick's Jamiroquai books are also bang on - not found a mistake there at all. The fact is that its plain petty to kill off the tab sites - most of the time the tabs are a mere guide to the music, and are often incorrect. Either way, you end up using your ear for elements of a song, so its not all bad to not have the tab, but it can sometimes help with tricky parts.
6. Tanc, I dont think its a case of not being able to handle a woman bassist- its more of an appreciation of her playing and her beauty. There is a shortage of female bassists, and I just feel that its nice to see a woman bassist, not because im sexist, but because you simply dont see them that often, and its a pleasant change. Nothing Sexist intended on my part. However I must ask the rest of the male contingent to please turn down the ogling - she is very pretty, that is clear, but she is also a good bassist, and would put me to shame any day. Lets keep our attentions on her playing - I've watched her other videos and she has actually inspired me to work on some funky tunes tonight!
7.
WOW.... That Fender Special Deluxe is AMAZING!!! and whats the two inputs on the yamaha for? Timface
I believe Mr Sheehan (who had a part to play in designing these basses) uses stereo outputs for his sound - hence the two outputs. Could be wrong though.
8. Im really liking the look of the blue Attitude - would be keen to have a play on it, never tried the scalloped frets thing before....
9. Nice basses - that Jazz looks identical to my old MIM Jazz, I stuck a badass II on mine and a pearloid plate but got bored and sold it off to Higgie on these boards....
10. When I started playing, if im honest, it was purely for the purposes of fitting in with my guitarist/drummer buddies and being in a band. As I have matured, ive grown to love my bass although I take my playing seriously enough to play for at least an hour a night, whether that be a little bit of theory practise, a bit of technique practise, or learning a song. I am never happy with my playing and I always try to raise the bar with what I do as I want to be able to do any gig that I am offered. I am a quick learner, and thus in just under a year ive managed to get comfortable with slap and funk playing in general, to the point where i am now in a wicked funk band. In response to your question - I want to be a kick ass bassist. I want to be noticed and recognised as a kick ass bassist. However, I know that Joe public doesnt know the difference and its only muso's that will appreciate my playing, but that doesnt stop me from trying!!! I honestly believe that so long as I put my mind to it, I can do anything I like. Im a believer that if you keep an open mind you will acheive what you want to achieve. The Playing in that video is fantastic, but lets face it, its a party trick - no disrespect to the player, he has talent, but for me personally tapping and solo bass is an aquired taste. I couldnt play like that, but there are things i can pull off that I know will make people smile (and no, im not talking about my trousers.) The point is that there are so many different methods of expressing yourself - whether it be making a song groove, backing up a band, or taking the limelight and kicking out a killer solo. Whatever yu do, so long as you enjoy yourself, whats the issue?
11. +1 - I get really wound up by the lack of tabs these days, however it has done me a favour in the sense that it makes me use my ear and this has meant that my overall ear for a bassline has improved. Record labels make me sick - rather than take a proactive approach they decide to simply attack the very musos who provide thier profits in the first place. They close these tab sites as they deem it to be taking money away from the original performer - but I am yet to see a comprehensive "official" tab book for sale with the tabs I need.
12. Damn you! Im after one of these but I dont have the cash right now - why does that always seem to happen to me!!!!! ARRRRRGH! Have a free bump and good luck with the sale.
13.
One of my fantasies to play down the line funk, complete with an on the jazz horn section. A nice line of good looking lady BV's ........ Sorry got carried away there, when are you recruiting the Horn section?
TO Be Honest, we need to get ourselves estabilished with a set list and some original tunes first. We have discussed the horn section and I personally would like to have one, but at this stage we are sticking with Keys, bass, vocals and drums. Im really enjoying this so far, the drummer im playing with is the best drummer ive ever had the pleasure of being in a band with - check out his playing here: www.myspace.com/kaldera
14.
As some/most of you may know, my rig was stolen recently. I'm currently saving up for a new one (thanks for the offers of replacement gear) and thought I'd get some input from the "experts". If you were buying everything over again from scratch, what would you consider essential? What would you suggest has the best tone/feel? All opinions will be treated with respect btw.... I'm looking for feedback not a chance to ridicule anyone
At the moment I am looking to upgrade to a lightweight rig - so currently favouring the Epiphani UL410, and would run it with a Mesa Boogie Bass 400 +. I remember playing thru Ped's old Boogie head, and it blew my socks off - valvey goodness at its best!
15. Hi Guys, I had the first rehearsal with my new funk band last night - minus one guitarist. I decided to get together with a guy I work with and two friends, and although I knew Lee (drummer) was awesome, I had no idea how good my work friend would be. My mate Kris is mad on funk and soul music, and he is a professionally trained vocalist, so he was a natural choice. So, we met up with a lineup of Drums, Bass, Keyboards and vocals - and despite missing a guitarist, we seemed to "gel" really well together. We played Jamiroquai's "Runaway" and "Too Young to Die", Tower Of Power's "Soul With a Capital S" and "Diggin on James Brown", and the classic "Play that Funky Music" by Wild Cherry. I havent had so much fun in my life! It was tight and groovey, and everyone was left excited and eager to get together again and continue - I think I am onto something with these guys! I cant wait for the next one - we have got the next 3 weeks booked up for rehearsals and we are going to learn about 10-15 songs for covers, and then work on writing our own songs. We even had a little play around with some ideas I have been working on for ages, and I think we have at least 2-3 ideas for originals - I will keep you all informed but I wanted to share the joy!
16. Hi Guys, My 5 year old Shure T series wireless died last night - well, it didnt die, but over the last few weeks, its been "farting" somewhat and I have tracewd it back to the bodypack. It has been through many gigs and has been knocked around a lot, so its seen a fair bit fo abuse. Ive been through the usual troubleshooting of checking cables, batteries and power, and its definately the bodypack. Im looking for a new wireless unit as ive been meaning to upgrade for some time now, I like the look of the Senheiser Freeport system, any advice? Other alternatives I have seen are the Shure PGX and SLX ranges, and the Trantec S2000 series. I would prefer a rackmounted unit, as its one less thing to carry - is the Senheiser Rack-mountable? Do you have any experiences with these various wireless systems? Any recommendations appreciated, im looking to buy something soon - but my GAS is for the Senheiser at the moment. Any Freeport owners? cheers Luke
17. Flippin' eck Doc - your beard has got longer since I last saw it!
18. Sounds like a plan mate - ill give you a call later on and we can sort out something fella - Ill bring me warwick, i bet it'll sound monstrous thru your V Type!
19. Where can I get an Epiphani UL 410 cab and how much am I looking at for one? Just out of curiosity as I am after something to replace my Hartke cab, as its far too heavy - fancy a nice light cab....
20. Hartke 3500 Hybrid - Tube preamp, solid state power amp side. I also run a DHA VT2 Dual Bass custom in front of the amp.
21. I have to say, ive never liked Marshall bass amps - Ive tried a few in the past and they have always seemed to lack definition, hardly any Midrange and sounded very honky through my cab. Ive not tried some of the newer stuff, but the older ones I have tried have left me cold in the past. Im open minded though so ill happily try some newer ones if the chance comes up!
22. Ped, ill hold you to that offer mate - Ill give you a call at some point soon and we can arrange to meet and jam it up mate!
23. Personally, I think that VOLUNTARY donations are a good idea, however I agree with Kiwi on this. The great thing about this forum is that it is a free resource dedicated to all things bass - lets keep it that way!
24. Hi Guys, Does anyone on here have a guitar tab for Jamiroquai's Runaway & Tower of Power's Diggin on James Brown? I've had studio time booked up for weeks, and only last night did my guitarist tell me he is having real trouble with finding some of the chords in these songs. If anyone can help that would be a great help as we are in the studio thursday night and rather than spending the session showing the guitarist how to play the song, it would be better to send him a tab so he can learn it at home first. I hate guitarists - hes had the songs for weeks and he only decides to start learning them at the last minute - GARRGH! Ive already got the bass parts nailed, so I dont need bass tabs etc
