Being a great player doesn't make someone a great teacher, find someone else, try and get some recommendations local to where you live, a local music shop maybe, don't let this bad experience put you off playing, good luck John

As the OP has said I find learning stuff on a six string guitar helps me play bass better, I enjoy both but bass playing is my # 1 John -
