1.
When you see everyone say "have a few lessons to get you started" it is easy to think how hard can it be?, those rockabillys spin them around and everything! As soon as you actually try and stand with one it all becomes clear that the only way is to have someone physically show you, even the good youtube clips are tricky to grasp imo. Btw Jake im ready for another next time you are up this way, ta
Will be in touch Pete...
2. Sarah is right you should be able to make good stops without your thumb in contact, (it's only to understand the concept of applying weight though and NOT a way to play) Balancing the instrument is vital here. I start all my lessons with posture and having the bass supported so that the left hand is free to move. In an ideal world you would have a few lessons where someone would show you just how to do that.
3. I once peered through the flaps at the end of a carousel to see a baggage handler drag my bass case off a cart by the headstock, letting the body of the bass drop to the floor with an almighty whack! Luckily it was well cushioned in a stevenson flightcase so there was no damage, I did however scream shout and swear at the little sh*t, for his utter disrespect, they know fully though that they are untouchable, because under the warsaw convention they are not liable for damages, they don't give a sh*t and it's a f***ing disgrace, I'm so pissed off to see JPs bass that way, his contribution to music has been stellar for over 25 years, and commercialism and pathetic attitude has led to this, as one of the comments in the thread says.. it will never be the same again...
4. Oh and I'm doing This Morning tomorrow eek I mean today... (must sleep)
5. It's been great so far, press night last night, we've had some rather nice reviews! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/theatre/theatre-news/10843071/Fings-Aint-Wot-They-Used-TBe-Theatre-Royal-Stratford-East-review-made-me-purr-with-pure-pleasure.html
6. Sorry for the no reply Ian, been hectic. I will try to get a look asap. Cheers Jake
7. Hi Ian, I'd like to give this a try at some point. I'll be straight about my position, I have 2 basses which I'd need to move on, a blockless wonder and a factory carved 1920s german flatback. I'd want to be able to record the bass in a bit of context if possible as despite being a little quiet acoustically my blockless records fantastically well so it would have to match that. So really I'm not in the best position as a buyer but would still like to give it a try and if all lined up and I liked it then . I'm in London all week until june 8th doing a show, where are you based? Jake
8. Bass: Easy to play, a lifetime to master.
9. I've mentioned this before but a while ago, I was lucky enough to tour with Ike Willis and have done a classical concert with Bobby Martin all around Zappa material, and slightly off centre I met Chad Wackerman backstage at a James Taylor gig, I know it's a clangsville post but I figured some folk would find it interesting. I've been a huge Zappa fan since my teens so to meet and play with the guys I grew up listening to and learning from was a massive honour.
10. After a series of properly pleasing pleasantries, regarding the speculative purchase (by me) of a precision bass that (he) (Shaggy) (Greg) was reluctant to sell but did... I acquired (from him) in perfect order, the aforementioned. The transaction was a smooth as ptfe tape and the bass is everything I have wanted in a P since my long long search began, like my jazz (mine since '97) I suspect it will remain in my possession permanently. Deal with total confidence, he's a gent and he knows how to sling a bass together!!
11. Thanks mate as it turns out I do have another (albeit tiny) feedback thread in my former BC name which will explain why you couldn't find it. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/69532-feedback-for-jakesbass/page__p__1300145__hl__jakesbass__fromsearch__1#entry1300145 I shall leave some glowing reciprocals in your thread forthwith
12.
"The vast majority of music work in the UK centres around London" so it would seem .... BUGGER, Im in the northwest, trying to make a living doing just music here is hard, on saying that, if i had my life again i would do it all again ( and still do!) the memories and the buzz as you know is something cash cannot pay for. But if you are a young player wondering how to try and make it work, loads of great advice above. and my bit of good advice to add to them is... product is king. if you play in say a cover band its great while you are out playing and getting paid, but for the long term, learn to write songs as soon as you can, and find ways of getting them heard.
Keep heart mate, I went to college and started my career in Liverpool and then went to live in the busier Manchester scene. It wasn't long before too many trips down the M6 made it the right decision to up sticks (with family and mortgage in tow... 3 kids) today I've done day 1 of rehearsals on a show that may well transfer to the West end and complete a UK tour. All paying my mortgage
13.
If You want reality, ask your self this..... How many people personally do i know that have bought their house from just playing music ??? I have been playing for 30 odd years and pro for 15 of them..... and i personally know 2 !! And to put that into reality ...one of them is a busker who has and still does busks all over the world
I've been a pro bass player for over 20 years and most of my colleagues have paid mortgages from music jobs, location is important. The vast majority of music work in the UK centres around London.
14.
Excellent stuff Jake may it run until your bank account overflows
Ha thanks, sadly my bank account has a leak, three of em in fact...! still hopefully they won't take me at my word when I say, just push me into the sea in a wheelchair... NOT YET!!!!
15. I'm playing in this: http://www.stratfordeast.com/fings-aint-what-they-used-to-be Should be fun, have done a read through, rehearsals start tomorrow. If anyone was interested in tickets, they actually are selling fast, as in it's almost sold out.
16. She really is great. What I love about her the most is that she took the musical vocabulary on bass that we all know and love and wrapped it firmly in her own identity and in the bargain speaks eloquently about some major issues. In interview she also seems like a lovely person... what a package!
17. There's a saying... 'How do you end up with a million quid in your bank as a musician?' 'start with two million'
18.
Mods, Mods, he swore!
19. I was teaching at LCCM yesterday, one of the students brought in a Rickenbacker.... It both looked and sounded Gorgeous!!!! Am I allowed to say that? I almost wish I wasn't....
20. Nice one Simon Nice to see you round these parts...
21.
That made me chuckle Oh and I think if you remove the s from the http it should embed
Thanks.. tried that but no joy apparently
22. I should have put this in the recording section... Is it possible to move it mods?
23. I'd put it like this. There are times when nothing other than a precision will do. I think it's rarer (but sometimes true) to say the same for other basses. I say this as someone who currently doesn't own a P bass (but is stealthily looking ) As for a purchase option, as mentioned the Squier CV precisions are a very lovely thing indeed, I've played a few and they've all been stunning for the money.
