1. It's not the first time I've been likened to those two! 😃😃
2. And we are there again folks Back at the Hippodrome all week! We did two nights last week and we are there from tonight (weds)until Sunday Then moving up to Edinburgh for a nine night stint at the festival She's a real treat of talent and entertainment so get down if you can!!
3. Thanks Richard... when talkers meet don't forget to ping me your email address for some backup materials mate.
4. I've only ever transited in the US so visa has never been an issue for me there but every other country I've worked in I've had one if required, I have lots of colleagues who have toured the US extensively and a quick message to a couple of them has universally brought the response, 'get work visas'
5. if you want to play fast flawlessly then you are best playing the whole thing at the speed you can manage the hardest bit, that way you will not have 'slow down' passages, you have to improve at what you're worst at, which can be hard to maintain the discipline to do. The temptation is to play achievable passages at pace and slow down for trickier parts, which sadly prevents an even improvement, and worse, teaches you an inexact neural pathway for the material, which can be harder to undo. Practice doesn't make perfect, only perfect practice makes perfect.
6. I've done this live a few times it's a great groove!! Thanks
7.
Worth a few bars of 16th note mentions. Great, melodic groover. I might be wrong, but I think Jaco mentioned him as an influence.
You're not wrong Garry...
8. Someone not mentioned here yet is Willie Weeks, check out his work on Donny Hathaway Live, to my mind one of the funkiest recordings in existence. Thing is with Willie is that his lines are super musical as well as very funky, and by all accounts he's a lovely guy too, a pal of mine has recorded with him (and Steve Jordan)
9. An EUB is a practical thing there's no doubt e.g. I have a gig in Switzerland end of the month so EUB will be used for obvious reasons. That aside, when you play DB you are playing an instrument, you learn it's nuances and you learn to make it sound etc etc so I think to a certain extent that makes a difference to your growth as a musician I'm not saying that's not possible on EUB I just think DB is a more natural choice when considering those things.
10. I puked in a piano solo whilst crossing the bay of biscay... I've never had seasickness before or after, but I was doing cabaret and our show night was in a storm that produced a 40 foot swell, I ran off during the piano solo in a gershwin medley and vomited profusely, but ever the professional, with the band leader shouting 'Jake you've got 10 seconds' I ran back out on stage and completed the set....
11.
Music dying? Very odd thing to say (imho of course). She is terrific entertainment, with a great voice. Well played Jake, great stuff.
Cheers Garry
12. And a video was made... I look grumpy because I'm reading so head down.. She is dynamite though! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Enygyo3ucY0&feature=youtu.be
13.
But you'll never get offered those gigs if you can't do both.
But ^ this will always remain true (shhh Doddy )
14. It's overlooked in some quarters, there is all the nuance, personality and character of music available when learning by ear, it should form part of any serious study of an instrument.
15. sublime... and yep Willie Weeks is dynamite on all of it, worth checking him out on Rickie Lee Jones first album too...
16. to the OP, learning major harmony from a diatonic perspective encapsulates the minor chords and arpeggios you seek.
17.
Yes, melodic minor is massively common in contemporary Jazz composing. Harmonic minor is used less so but, ironically, it appears in a lot of my writing!! I just hear it that way.
Me too Rob.. also worth pointing out that it's the prevalent scale sound in minor II V I sequences with the major third in the V chord being the major 7th of the (harmonic) minor scale derivative, most people tend to think the b9 is the alteration whereas that does in fact belong. maybe it's a Welsh thing
18.
Hey Jake, is this the same diet you have been advocating (no processed foods, sugar in very low quantities, red wine as a treat! etc) for sustained weight loss or did you start with a different one?
(sorry for delay been v busy) Same one mate, the major thing it achieves (it seems) is more efficiency for your organs so (I assume) there is less opportunity for uric acid to build up. I'm not a doctor, but I'm not bad at being my own doctor... I found looking up the list of high purine foods helpful, and when I was having attacks, I just minimised their intake. Hope it's better mate. edit.. and a big +1 for cherry concentrate...
19. Clarky I've managed gout for over 5 years with diet (yes I did lose a load of weight too) but I'm a walking encyclopaedia on the subject, feel free to ask any questions... Mine is also genetic, and I've had just 3 attacks in 5 years which by all accounts is good as at their worst they can be monthly...
20. Just back from 3 nights with this lady and for the first time in years I had several massive goose bump moments in the show, she is truly world class...!
21.
Not many are disciplined enough to just play roots
Apart from the good players
22. I know cabaret can be looked down upon in music circles sometimes but this lady is in my view worthy of the highest accolade, she has one of the most incredible voices I've had the pleasure of performing with. I'm doing 3 nights (2 to go) with her at the Hippodrome Leicester square. I'd say come down but it's sold out already, no surprise she is a staggeringly good singer but also very musical and lovely AND humble with it. A total winning combo. For the impatient amongst you the music starts around 3.30 http://youtu.be/TiOPigCwYlc
23.
+2
+3
