1. Hello all, Recently bought a seconhand Status Energy Bass and it's from around mid 90s (thanks to Rob Green at Status for this info) The electrics are good but the wood body needs to be refurbished as it's seen a fair bit of action (think it's mahogany) I was thinking of upgrading the neck to a graphite one and was wondering what are they like to play on, do they feel / play differently from wood necks ? I've already got a quote from Rob at Status, and although fairly expensive, I'm tempted to upgrade, just looking for feedback etc from all you Status owners out there Cheers Fraser
2. Have been listening to Kings of Leons new album, absolutely love Sex on Fire, the bassline is so good. This will be my first song to learn for 2009, nothing to to with my band but just a good song to learn
3. Happy New Year to everyone 28 years ago since I was at school Fraser
4. I'd say I'm about average really, good enough for what I'm doing but no fancy frills or anything. I would say that I'm better now than when I first started with the blues band, have learnt so much about being in a band these last 2 or 3 years. I do have the added disadvantage of having to work with a drummer who doesn't listen to the bass so have to fill in more on the rhythm side of things. At our last gig before Xmas the stage setup was slightly different, with the bass amp being further away from the drums. The singer/guitarist asked the drummer if he wanted the bass nearer to him to which the drummer replied, I don't listen to the bass I listen to the you singing or the keys. There have been arguments about this before at practices, and he's also been asked to do more in the way of just good solid drumming (not just pi55ing about on his cymbals all the time) but the end result will be a new drummer for 2009 hooray - moan over
5. In addition to the 3 in my sig I have the following: Bass Collection 5 string (Jap import) Hohner headless B2A Tobias Toby Pro Shine Telecaster Ventura Fretless Wesley clear acrylic Ibanez Roadstar P bass (my very first bass) Epiphone T-bird Hohner 5 string Ozark acoustic Grant (I think) P bass converted to fretless Way too many - also have a couple of guitars as well Fraser
6.
Just bitten the bullet and pushed the button on one of these for travelling abroad. Initial impressions are good, I might do a review later in the week.
Cool, hope you like the bass, they are pretty decently made. I have no idea how old mine is, or how you can find out the age of them. I'll see if I can post a pic of the bass. One thing I will say is that the case that comes with the bass is remarkably good, but a little like a small gun case (maybe something to think about if you're travelling ?) Although I've never had any problems in carrying it around. cheers Fraser Quick edit - the bass is a B2A
7. I've got a Hohner B2A (I think that's the type, need to check that) headless 4 string in black and white. I've used it live before, but not for a few years. It's great to have as a back up with you, and also very protable.
8. Whole Lotta Led (not sure if Tribute bands count but they are good ) 15th Nov Edinburgh Liquid Room Molly Hatchet and Blackfoot 30th Nov Edinburgh Liquid Room Haven't seen Blackfoot since Knebworth 85
9. I was thinking of looking at the 1000 watts version, but I don't like the mix of sliders and knobs. I do have a Superfly amp (and also the Superfly lightweight cabs) and get a good sound. I know I'll have to replace the Superfly at some stage Dr Daves comments spring to mind !! but hopefully it'll be because the amp is old rather than blowing up.
10. I got my scratchplate from Highlystrung www.highlystrung.co.uk cheers Fraser
11. Just had a quick look on GAK and came up with this shortscale Epiphone EG 0 SG http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/epiphone-eb-0-sg/469 cheers Fraser
12.
I've bought a Fender Japan Jazz 62ri body but it doesn't have a scratchplate. I remember reading somewhere that the holes will only line up with a Japanese scratchplate. Is that true? Anyone know where I can get one? Ishibashi want £34 for an Allparts one shipped... I'm looking for an off white/parchment
I replaced the white one on my CIJ Geddy Lee Jazz with a black pearloid. It fitted perfectly, no mods required. I still have the white one if you're interested, or I could find the website I used to source the black pearloid one ? Sadly, I'm at work today, but could post up or pm you the web addy when I get home later today Cheers Fraser

14. + 1 on relicking Ricks don't get them, horrible nasty trebly clanking sound Peavey amps / cabs don't get them either Have tried an Ashdown ABM valve amp at a gig and hated it - too many controls (sliders/knobs) to get a decent sound For the record I can get a very useful range of sounds out of my Ashdown amps (Superfly/Mag300) with my Superfly cabs, have been told the sound is warm and kind of vintage - perfect for blues Also have no problems with my Fenders (sorry quite like em) or my Warwick, which is currently my main live bass
15. Had to learn a different bass line for Worried Life Blues as the one I was using was rubbish. Had a trawl through my music collection and found a John Lee Hooker version so pinched, ermmm learned that one. Only one problem the Hooker version was in E, we play it in C. So had to invent a link to get me to G at the last bar. Oh and it was for a big gig we had for the Edinburgh Fringe last week as well, so pretty chuffed it's worked. On a side note - Jonsmith that's a cracking looking double neck you have there ! Cheers Fraser
16. For me - playing in a band backing a troupe of lap dancers. Best practice for not looking at my fretting hand I ever had.............
sounds like the dream gig to me (lucky so and so springs to mind ) Have played a pub gig that had a funeral party wander in and enjoy themslves. Played at a Jazz/Blues weekend recently in Glasgow. We were asked to end the weekend at short notice (the manager had previously refused us a spot during the weekend as we were from Edinburgh, despite his asst manageress having seen us and saying we would fit into the bill well). Anyway, long story short, we went on very late on the Sunday played really well to a virtually empty venue, and the manager asking why we hadn't been chosen to play earlier in the weekend............
17. hi Sarah, An RCD circuit breaker basically stops and protects electricity spikes reaching equipment (including you the bass player) It trips when there's a spike in the power and cuts the supply http://www.amazon.co.uk/Time-Adaptor-Safet...r/dp/B000QIHU2M
18. I have one of the Tele 4 strings - it is a little bit heavy - in a natural varnished finish. It plays not too badly but has a rocky sound which doesn't suit the Blues band I'm in, so have never played it live. I love its natural look. I don't have any pics of mine but the link below gives a very good example of what it looks like. http://www.britnett-carver.co.uk/masimpsons/prods/132.html Cheers Fraser
19.
I've got one of the £40 Fender Platinum ones. Seems pretty indestructable so far! It's meant to suffer almost no signal degridation at all. Have a read of the review... http://www.bassplayer.com/article/fender-p...ld/aug-07/30546
I have one of these too (it's my second as the first one had a slight kink at the straight end which meant it disconnected at the amp end when it moved !) Soundcontrol were not amused when I took it back and asked for a replacement and they couldn't replicate the problem, it was a problem with my amp etc. Kept telling me that the 90 degree end should go in the amp and the straight end into my bass. They wouldn't believe that the cable was made specifically for Fender basses with the socket on the front of the bass Got it changed though, and it works great
20. Was speaking to one of the guys in the Edinburgh shop last week - there's potentially a Norwegian company interested, who were looking at the Glasgow shop which may, or may not, lead to an offer (but unsure if that's just for the Glasgow one or for more shops) Beyond that nada Cheers Fraser
21. Depends what sort of money you're talking about, but the 350W little Giant is reasonably priced but will probably need a 4 Ohm cab to go with it to get the power out of it. Peavey do a 15" 4 Ohm cab that is reasonably priced as well or check soundcontrol for Ashdown 15" cabs too. The Ashdown Superfly is a great price for 500W of power but requires aforementioned 4 Ohm cab to get the power (2 x 250 outputs) Shameless plug here (sorry) I recently got the Superfly 15" cab (4 Ohm) and now have a spare Ashdown ABM mini 15" cab (8 Ohm) it has been gigged with my Superfly and a MAG300 amps but is in VGC. It comes with an Ashdown canvas cover as well. Hope this helps Cheers Fraser
22. Congrats PSN on getting the endorsement and best wishes for the band. Fraser
23. I don't have party piece either (play in a blues band) but I do get to wander around with some of the bass lines as long as what I play fits into the groove (tends to be of the simple variety for me really - I'm not flash in any way) I am occasionally told to turn up Cheers Fraser Ooooh just noticed I'm no longer a newbie
24. Ermmmmmm.......... you could always splash out for wireless gear and go cordless (runs for cover )
25. I have two geetars a Brian May Red Special (with fitted case) bought in 2001 and an Epiphone SG (Angus Young type twin p/u) in cherry red. Used to have a Yamaha Pacifica Tele, which I swapped for a bass, kind of regret that as the Tele was a really nice guitar and very easy to play. As an observation from reading this thread, there seems to be quite a few people here who like/own Teles cheers Fraser
