I was actually thinking of him last night as I watched the 'Site and Sound' Concert. But he didn't technically speaking inspire me A
I thought of him as a competent bass player for a band I loved. Looking back now I can see how he helped to shape my playing - as did the whole band. While most 70s prog bands now sound mainstream, Giant still sound as "off the wall" as they did then.

Some good suggestions - but surely any violin bass trumps them all?

Are people who say "my bass never goes out of tune" crazy?
GregBass replied to thepurpleblob's topic in General Discussion
All my basses stay in tune so well that I never bother to check the tuning. How I laugh at the trouble the guitarists in my band have trying to make their instruments sound good with mine! -
Ray Shulman, anyone?

Leaving a band - any advice gratefully received
GregBass replied to GregBass's topic in General Discussion
Happy Jack - the theory is that the band has always worked out their parts between rehearsals and just put the songs together on practise nights. Added to which, there is no new material here. It's all songs we have worked on before. -

Thanks for the rapid advice guys. They are (mostly) decent guys, and one rehearsal wouldn't be a problem. I think their plan is to have a rehearsal, then a three week break while the singer goes on a visit to Australia, then cram in two quick practises before the gig. Personally I would be happy to stretch to the two just before the gig - but if they have gone rusty in the last three weeks then I can't see the benefit of rehearsing before another three week break. I'll keep you informed ..... -
I thought volume controls only had two settings - off and full Seriously, pots can be logarithmic or linear. It sounds as though you have the wrong type. Look to see if it says log or lin anywhere on the pots themselves, then replace with the other type of the same value.

Hi all OK - I suspect that most of us have been through this at one time or another. I have just left a band that I had helped to start, and had been with through (a few) good times and (many) bad for two years. I told them that I would do the two remaining gigs for this year (the low gig rate was the main reason for my leaving) and they have just contacted me to take me up. That's no problem. They are a rock covers band with a current set of 21 numbers, and last night they auditioned for my replacement. Because of holidays, they had not rehearsed for a while and realised just how rusty they have become. So - here's the crunch. They want me to go along to three rehearsals before the gig - essentially to help them brush up on songs that I feel I already know. I feel disinclined to do this. They have already auditioned for my replacement, and only need this rehearsal because their own holiday schedule is stopping them from staying tight as a band. I feel that's their problem - I will happily turn up knowing my parts and having all my vocal harmonies in place. The rest is up to them. Am I being unreasonable? The rehearsal room is 30 miles from my home, making it bloody inconvenient! Cheers Greg
Sunburst eh? http://www.ebay.co.u...t-/350858007940
Maybe it's sunburst underneath the black paint?
So is Dr M the ebay seller too? You may not be aware of this: "This forum is for the discussion of Ebay auctions. Please do not promote your own auctions. If you have something to sell, please use the For Sale forums. (Moderated by mcgraham)."
If Dr M was the ebay seller, would he really have appended "Or, alternatively, a Jaco sig that someone's slapped a fretted neck onto..." in the original post? Hardly likely to make us form a queue to bid

If you have sound on your PC, Maplin sell USB turntables. You can then use your existing gear

Also, everything is described as New (other). Even the vintage items
I had a shuttle 9.0 and thought it a bit thin sounding, is the streamliner really such a different animal?
That was my experience too. I moved my Shuttle on, and the guy who bought it loves it to bits. I didn't think it was even close to being as good as my Peavey. Funny old world, eh?

Good point, Mart. Where are you based, Phil. If you are close to me you are welcome to drop by and try my Warwicks and Rockbass to see for yourself.
-
Wow - PhilLawton, if you want a Warwick fretless then buy that one NOW. Those early 1990s Warwick necks are a dream to play!
-
As someone who owns both, Rockbasses are budget instruments that share only the Warwick name with their German counterparts. Don't get me wrong - they are perfectly playable, decent quality budget instruments. They don't, however, compare with the full blown Warwick range. Certainly the older Rockbasses don't use the same tone woods, and they tend not have the famous Warwick growl.

My son had one of these and got great results with this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WARRIOR-EP300-PROFESSIONAL-POWER-AMPLIFIER-300-WATT-BRAND-NEW-/300941563207?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_Amplifiers&hash=item461183d547

I have had two Rick 4001s - a 1972 that I bought new and the 1979 that I have now. Both played a dream right from the start and sounded like Ricks. Maybe I'm lucky, or maybe those who claim Ricks are poor are actually just looking for something else.

This makes it easy to assess the differences and similarities. For me, the 76 and 77 were the pick of the bunch

Can you shed any light on the bass i have? Charvel.
GregBass replied to Kevstein's topic in Bass Guitars
They seem to be Korean made but very highly regarded for a starter bass. Is it one of these? http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/bass_guitars/charvette/400/index.html -
What about a Hofner violin bass? I've read that Macca only paid £30 for his one but it must be worth well over £100k by now.
I may have mentioned this before, but I had a 1960s Hofner Violin Bass. Played like a dog, sounded like someone kicking a cardboard box - so I sold it for £15 (including the original case). In terms of the actual instrument, I did the right thing. In terms of investment it was probably the biggest mistake I ever made. If you want a usable instrument, find one you like and play it. If you want an investment, it's sheer guesswork - but I suspect that most modern Fenders will never fetch a premium.
