1.
intrested in this by any chance? http://basschat.co.u...te-std-4string/
Now that is interesting. Particularly interested in the "thinner neck." But how would the trade work? I'm terrified of shipping. Bump.
 2.
More tension, surely?
Agreed, heavier strings have more tension, so a tighter truss rod seems needed. This is balanced by downtuning and in fact I have loosened my truss rod a bit because even though the strings are as fat as I can get, we detune 2 semitones which reduces the tension a lot.
 3.
have you tried any ibanez basses? They generally have quite slim necks. http://www.gear4musi...uitar-Black/667 http://www.dv247.com...mahogany--50256 These have 16.5 mm spacing, but I can't vouch for the accuracy as I don't own one.
My Ibanez 5 string, which is for sale (shameless plug! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/118050-ibanez-prestige-sr4005e-5-string-now-l800/) has fairly narrow spacing, which I like. The neck depth i.e. distance from the front of the fingerboard to the back of the neck is quite shallow too, which I like. Still too much for my tiny hands though!
 4. I think you might well be able to hear the difference, perhaps not in volume but certainly in tone. I used to have a Trace Elliot 2x10 combo, it never really had a great bottom end. I suspect they reduced the size of the thing both to save weight and also ensure they had space to fit the amp section in. As a result the tuning was probably a bit off. I got a 15" extension cabinet and the bottom end was back! So I say go for it.
 5.
Oh lord, this isn't helping my cab GAS at all, you know - I've been considering another Schroeder (8 ohm) cab to go with my 4 ohm 1515L, but I've been held back by the 4+8=2.67 load on the RH450. Aldude, do you have a link to the TC specs released on the quiet, by any chance? The hi-fi highs don't bother me, luckily - hence the tweeterless 2x15
There was a thread on BC a while back, I will have a look for it now... EDIT: here it is: http://www.tcelectro...-management.pdf It's a document released by TC to explain their magic APM tech. Look for the table at the bottom. The "Min. load" for each TC amp is given. Looks like I was slightly mistaken in thinking that the RH450 was rated to down to 2 ohm, but TC seem to suggest it's ok for 2.66 ohm at least, i.e. 4+8 ohm cabs or 8+8+8 (three cabs). TC probably did this so they could sell three cabs per head rather than two
 6.
Down to individual taste. Pro's and Con's to all set ups. And plenty of Gas exchanges in the for sale section of variety of amp makes and models. Am more than happy with my RH Head and Barefaced Cab set up.
I also am happy with my RH450/Barefaced... though I am running a two Barefaced cabs, 4+8 ohms remember these heads can go down to at least 2.67 ohms (tested by me), so more cabs for greater sensitivity is possible. I would also not hesitate to run it at 2 ohms either, TC's specs released on the quiet seem to suggest this is possible. As for volume, I find there is too much, and I have set the "preset level" for each preset at less than 50% so that the volume control becomes a bit more useable. Still, I never run the volume control over about 1/3 before it becomes too loud ... I am in a loud rock band. Mind you, those Barefaced cabs are sensitive. (I use Compact + S12T.) The only thing I don't like about the head is the distinct lack of hifi type high frequencies, as I believe there is a roll off at about 6kHz. This is why I would trade up for the RH750 when the cash becomes available - I definitely don't need more power, but the tweetertone control seems to be what I need.
 7. I didn't ask anyone else to try so it could be the crappy headphones. I did find the frequency while not looking at the frequency display. Also, I found it much easier to start at a high frequency and turn it down until I could hear something, instead of turning it up until the sound went away. FWIW I constantly have a high pitched noise in my ears that never goes away...
 8. So, I went to @Bristol in ... Bristol. They have an exhibit with headphones and a knob which you can turn to change the frequency of a tone into the headphones. I found I could hear up to 13100 Hz. Anything above that ... nothing. Seems very low, even for my 32 year old ears! That explains why my RH450 treble control doesn't seem to raise the treble
Ah, thank you. So it'll be pretty easy to overwrite a patch youve spent hours tweaking by mistake!?
Not really, to overwrite a patch you need to go into the store/swap menu, then select the patch to overwrite/swap, etc. If you never use the store/swap facility (like me) then the last settings for each patch will just be there when you go back to it.
Got mine last night - had a 40 minute play. On the B2, you had two areas of patches - one for user patches and one for preset patches. Having a quick look around on this last night it seems you have to overwrite the presets to save your own patches - have I got that right? Thanks Chris
Yes. In fact, if you change anything on a patch it saves it automatically so there's no actual saving to be done at all, unless you want to move or swap a patch.
I had a very different experience, though the G5 clone had a pretty good tone I thought the tracking of that and all other synths was awful.
It probably depends a lot on the sound you get/want from your bass... the B3 (and other synths I guess) detect the frequency of the note and if there are a lot of mids, harmonics or whatnot the synth has more difficulty in tracking the actual note being played.
 12. Here's one of me in a pub in south Wales in December, nice shot of two Barefaced cabs in the background!

 14. I had this problem when I used my 5 with the Polytune (original, not mini). I just tuned the B separately - well actually I did and still do with all the strings, as I don't trust the poly mode, so it didn't bother me, but you're not the only one out there. No idea what could be causing this - could be a batch issue, instrument level, EQ (too much harmonics?) - who knows. I was actually using a Line6 G50 wireless straight into the polytune.
 15.
What cabs? A 4 ohm 212 and an 8 ohm 112 will give all speakers the same power so will not be a mismatch. If you're putting a 4 ohm 112 and an 8 ohm 112 together they will receive different levels of power, but at your volume levels I doubt it would be too noticeable.
This!!! I use a Barefaced Compact (8 ohm) 1x15 and Super 12 (4 ohm) 2x12. So, 2/3 of the power goes to the S12, but this is divided between the speakers. So, all three speakers get 1/3 of the power - I guess it's as if I used three 8 ohm cabs, 1x15, 1x12 and 1x12. I don't see a mismatch here! And I certainly don't hear one.

 17.
The thumpinators a high pass filter, or a low cut filter. AFAIK the rh450 has a low pass filter to remove all the zinginess & to get a more vintage sound. Not entirely sure about the compression thing.
Oh yeah whoops, the thumpinator does have a high pass filter!
 18.
I just had a thought, is this similar to what the tc rh450 does?
No, completely different. The thumpinator is a low pass filter (I understand), whereas the RH amps perform compression or some other related trickery to make their amps sound a bit louder when they are pushed.
Interesting stuff re the whole wet and dry amounts, Although I like my B3 I was thinking of still using a compressor pedal because I couldn't get that heavily compressed sound out of it but it may be the mixed in dry signal that is the causing the problem, Is it the 'Bal' or 'Level' contrrol on the 'Total' page that changes the mix of the wet and dry sound?
It's bal that controls the wet/dry mix. Level controls the output level i.e. the volume.
 20. What, no Ibanez love? Fantastic bass, 5 is just too much for me though, I have the 4 string version as a main bass and it's great.
 21. You could do it by using two 2-channel blenders. Use one blender to blend two signals, and use the second blender to blend the third signal with the first blender output. Probably cheaper than a custom 3-way blender. EDIT: oops, did not read the OP properly! This was your original suggestion - I would go with that as one more LS-2 would be much cheaper and I can't see any drawback other than space.
