And another thing... (this could go on for a while...) When tab tells a beginner to play "fret 2 on the 1st string" it might not even occur to them that there are other places whence this note can be produced, and it certainly won't encourage to find out. But everyone's hands (and strings) are different, so playing the note elsewhere may sit more comfortably under the player's hands, result in better tone, etc. It also won't encourage them to even think about what the note is and how it relates to other notes.
-
One of the problems with tab is that it's tied to a particular instrument, whereas standard music notation isn't. Say there's a line to be doubled by keyboard and bass: your bass tab means nothing to the keyboard player, and if you don't read music his score means nothing to you.

Hm, thanks all... I think the practicalities will dictate that I do in fact wait for a couple of weeks. I expect what will happen is that I'll pay a lot of attention to the monitor mix for a few days - share it with the other musicians etc - then get sick of it, ignore it, then approach it afresh on mix day!

Hi, I've got a day in the studio coming up to track a couple of demos, with the intention of going back a few days later for an as-yet unbooked mixing session. I have a day job, the first session's on a Sunday, and Plan A was to go back in on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon. As it turns out, my diary has gone crazy the week after the tracking session, and I’m torn between finishing it off ASAP and giving myself a good few days to pick over the monitor mix, which in practice would delay the session by up to two weeks. Any thoughts, what would you do, etc.? (Both sessions will be in the hands of a trusted engineer, who’ll be doing most of the work ;-) ) As ever, I’m juggling “I want it to be perfect”, “It’s only a demo” and “I want it NOW!”.

How does a speaker make more than one sound at a time ?
ras52 replied to essexbasscat's topic in Amps and Cabs
If you didn't know there were different instruments in the sound, you'd hear an orchestra as one instrument.
Indeed, and this ties in with another thread which discussed people who couldn't/didn't separate individual instruments in a band. Hence the term "ear-training" for the process by which we learn to unscramble what we hear. -
How does a speaker make more than one sound at a time ?
ras52 replied to essexbasscat's topic in Amps and Cabs
Think of the orchestra example: without any amplification, what hits your ear is the complex (wibbly wobbly) wave that arises in the air from the natural confluence of also-complex (wibbly wobbly) waves of the individual sound sources (instruments, ambient noise...). All this happens naturally. In a reproduction system with perfect fidelity, the speaker would reproduce that very same complex wave: it's told to do so by an incoming electrical signal whose oscillations are analogous the wave in the air. -

ras52 replied to essexbasscat's topic in Amps and Cabs
It doesn't, it just sounds like it does. If it was just handling a pure sine wave, it would be going in and out in a nice smooth pattern. Otherwise it's handling a complex wave form which is the result of combining the various elements in the sound, and your brain incredibly cleverly decodes this into the sounds of individual instruments, etc. In fact the speaker is just emulating what happens naturally in the air in an acoustic scenario! -
Thanks for the rapid responses, guys, all sounds good - I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi folks, I’m seeking a bit of advice on fixing up my P bass. The screwhole below the jack socket is wrecked, the screw doesn’t stay in and consequently the scratchplate lifts up when I pull the jack out. How would you go about fixing this? I’ve vaguely recall someone mentioning match splints and wood glue in the screwhole. Also, what’s the best practise for removing the scratchplate without straining the wiring? The last time I did it - to renew the under-pickup foam - I ended up having to do some re-soldering

I was assuming Goose was one of those new soon-to-be-outlawed-designer-legal-highs that Sally Bercow is chomping at the bit to try. (BTW is she coming?)
No. as Ped said, we must not get ourselves arrested, which means Seashell and I - and any other girl attending - will NOT be wearing leather miniskirts, skimpy tops, stilettos or fishnets. And the long-haired, leather-clad guys among you will have to make sure you're not carrying any drugs
OK, so I'll wear my leather miniskirt, skimpy top, stilettos and fishnets, and rely on the girls to bring the drugs.
Seymour Duncan SBP1 Gets my vote. Got one in mt CV P. The best complement I can give it is, it's ability to sound like a P Bass!
Spookily enough, I've just acquired an SPB-1 with the intention of putting in my Ryder*, but then scooped a bargain CV P thanks to a heads-up on here. So now the Ryder looks like being put aside, with the possibility of putting the SPB-1 in the CV. Having listened to the clips at http://www.atkinsonb...multimedia.html, I'm slightly sceptical... before I get out my soldering iron, what can I expect from the upgrade. Don't CV's sound like P's anyway? * I was going to say "putting it in Sue Ryder" but I know what you lot are like!** ** Because I'm the same.

First impression of the CV: wow! Mostly unplugged noodling so far: next, on with some flats and some setup tweaks. I think Sue Ryder just became redundant.
