Guitars Just Won't Stick to the Recording
fretmeister replied to Blaze Esq's topic in General Discussion
I can read, but 99% of the cover bands I’ve been in have done it the traditional way. Working it out by listening to the album a billion times. Properly arranged sheet music for top 40 covers isn’t very common because the players are usually relying on tab. Even official tab books are wrong half the time. -
Guitars Just Won't Stick to the Recording

I can’t think of anything more boring than playing everything identically to a record. Most bands who wrote the originals don’t even do that.- 90 replies

I’d like an 8 string too. -

Whatever Leo says it was. -
I really like the idea, but tonal needs vary massively from metal to jazz to me.

The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
fretmeister replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
Well… it seems a Sandberg Superlight can be ordered with a 30 inch scale! So I’m guessing that’s it’s also possible to order a Lionel with the Superlight woods. That’s settled my next bass! -
My 32 is in BEAD. Its all about getting the right strings.

I play with a piano player, 2 bari saxes, and a trombone. (and the rest of the band) That's a lot of congestion at the low end. It all comes down to the arrangement. Sometimes that is everybody playing the same thing, sometimes it's completely different parts. For that band I'm usually using a Duck Dunn sort of tone. Not much really low bass, but with a lot of low and medium mids. Not much treble. I figure that if Duck worked it out then that was the right way to go!

Are scale conversion necks a thing for basses?

Good spot! I'll have to send them an email to see what the prices are. -
Comfort Strapp or Neotech Mega Strap -Update

I've had both. I much preferred the Neotech. I have them on most of my instruments. -
American Original P bass vs. Stingray Special video
fretmeister replied to Vanheusen77's topic in Bass Guitars
It is a great video. Unless it's for something specific like Steve Harris or Billy Sheehan tones I'm also of the view that a P bass with the tone up full is a bit crap. When I play mine (with ti flats) I take the Duck Dunn approach and have the tone at about 50%-60% so I've got a bit of movement both ways to adjust for the room on the fly. I'd love to get a 4 string Stingray (I had a 5 string) but the specials have wider nuts than the previous version and they are too wide for me, and the chances of finding one with an SLO neck that is under 7.5lb appear to be non-existent. So I will just have to put up with that. -
I had a baritone bitsa for a while. It was great fun but at the same time I found myself not really knowing what to do with it. I just seemed to play guitar stuff a lot lower!

I'm aware that Wamoth and others make guitar scale conversion necks, but does anyone make bass ones? Just curious really as I have a P bass that I was thinking about doing a neck swap on, to put a jazz neck on it, and then it just occurred to me that a shorter scale might be nice too. Any ideas?

I was thinking the good old Halford's spray can approach to seal it and then cover it in stickers.
-
Tried them. Liked them. Then got annoyed that they didn't sound like something else. And then I got annoyed that the next set didn't sound like... etc etc etc
-
Strings are my weakness. Always swapping them. I bet I've spent more on strings than on pedals. Probably one of the reasons I really hate bridges where the string has to be threaded though it rather than a top loader!

And the other plug too. It changes the “flat” EQ curve on the preamp to slightly reduce the mids and increase top end presence.

I sent him a message. He’s got Ti flats on it. My preferred strings for a P. I am definitely in trouble! -
