  1. When i joined BC playing in bands was purely a hobby for me. That was quite a few yrs back. Since retiring early i started playing more seriously with the bands i was part off. When i finally got the Glam covers band going i was kinda hooked into playing both for enjoyment and the income was certainly useful. Now i'm quite annoyed if the fee isn't what i'm used to. The number of gigs i'm doing in a year doubled in 2023 and has tripled for this year but it still feels more like a busy hobby for me and i'm happy with that. I have a lot more respect for musicians like Daryl @Bluewine who earn a living from playing. Its not an easy job to take on making sure the gigs are there every weekend. I can see it being quite stressful in that respect so all credit to all the guys earning a fulltime living from gigging. My respect to you all. Dave
  2. Oddly enough the pick ups can be put into serial or parallel mode. In parallel mode the pick ups are def louder and deeper almost boomy with a lack of hi-mid clarity IMO. To be fair i haven't experimented with that position. At the last gig i used series mode and couldn't hear the top end too well and this is the surprising part that wehn i put it into P position only the top end and depth was there. That did surprise me but i have to admit that P pick up is pretty impressive. Dave
  3. Just bought a passive Godin Shifter bass and i love it but i've noticed the pick-ups are very hot even compared to my active basses. Compared with my other passive basses with amp at exact same settings and bass volumes at max i find with the Godin volume i need to turn the volume on the bass down to less than half the pot range. Its not a major issue by any means but i'm now curious. What causes a pick up to be this hot ? Is it the number of windings in the coils ? Is it just the resistance of the coil wire V's coil windings etc ? I'm just curious TBH. Dave
  4. Sad news, had several conversations with him over the years. Condolences to his family. Our thoughts are with them. Dave
  5. @Steve_M that's an impressive workload. Are you full time at this not that it matters its still quite an achievement. Well done sir. Dave
  6. How far was the run to Brighton for you @Clarky ? Playing is still a hobby for me too and i've played gigs and it cost me money but i'm trying to avoid that nowadays. Need to at least break even. The gigs where i took a loss were when fuel prices were ridiculous but we had already agreed a price with the venue. Dave
  7. Punk gig with Emergency Exit last night 6-9pm so able to get a kebab on way home Fairly busy but not packed. Few dancers throughout the evening. Used the Godin Shifter Classic for its first gig. Took me a while to get a sound i enjoyed altho others said it sounded deep and more full sounding than my MarloweDK. I think my problem was where i was standing directly in front of the amp it was just hard to hear an accurate sound. Some vids appeared late last night and the bass sounds really nice so i think its a keeper. Great neck and very easy to play. Pick-ups are very hot on the Godin and i had to drop the compression level and gain quite a bit to stop peaking which is always my starting point for any new bass and then i start bringing the gain back up to get that little bit of overdrive. New Pinegove strap i got from @walshy worked a treat with no shoulder aches at all. Ampeg SVT7 and Mesa cabs Great night with enthusiastic audience. Dave
  8. What's the band called @WalMan. I'm a big fan of Prog and love hearing covers of classic prog songs. Dave
  9. My days of spending that kind of money on a bass to lie in the house as an ornament are long gone. Happier buying basses i can gig with and that fit the band image. Afraid an alembic doesn't really fit with Glam and punk band images. How shallow am i Dave
  10. Sad for city centre venues and for a lot of bands that just can't afford to play there these days. Lot of venues in Glasgow will be feeling it. Glasgow also has certain roads only for buses during day time hrs but open up after 6pm to all traffic. Its not exactly clear when you're trying to navigate traffic and pedestrians just wandering across roads as and wherever they like so its easy to miss a road sign. Too many traffic lights and road signs in one area can cause people to miss something. Its brain overload at times. Every time i go into Glasgow they've changed the road layout and traffic management system. One night after a Glasgow rehearsal 1-12pm they had closed off the slip road onto the motorway and the diversion was in thru the town centre. What happens if your car is not ULEZ compliant but you have no option. Dave
  11. Whimp. Its embarrassing to watch. Maybe he was a professional footballer when he was younger Dave
  12. Our band is same, all from different areas so a single vehicle just doesn't work for us. If we need a van for our larger PA we hire one as a band but its only myself as the nominated driver and the drummer who lives 30mins drive from me. I ended up the nominated van getter and driver because i was retired and not working so pick up and drop off was easier for me. Obviously you guys have a lot more gear for the size of the venues you play. I know a few tribute bands that just turn up with their own backline and hire a PA and lighting either thru the theatres or a local reputable company. Dave
  13. You could add it to the fee i guess but pretty sure the venues wouldn't be too pleased. What you guys need is a single 7.5t truck. All the gear in one vehicle. Dave
  14. Sorry to hear you're having to give up one of your main hobbies Dave. Fully understand your thinking and i'll do the same when the time comes one way or another. Cracking bass too. I'm guessing its the wider neck. Pretty sure it won't last long here GLWTS. Take care. Dave
  15. Cracking venue Daryl. Well done sir. Dave
  16. Doesn't help when you get charged for the day up to midnight and again after midnight rather than just one charge for a single event. Not sure if you can get a permit that allows you one charge for both days ? Probably not. Glasgow council finances are in a poor state. Dave
  17. We've given up on Glasgow centre. Too difficult getting to venues and parking is a joke plus the ULEZ zone doesn't help for some of the band.
  18. Paisley has just changed its parking regulations so they'll have the wardens out trying to catch as many folks out before they get used to the new regs. Its a bit of a pain in Paisley as any time i've been there its never been "that" busy. Shame as it could kill off the town centre completely. I'm always worried about parking at The Cave in the road up to The Bungalow. Dave
  19. Aye you were lucky. All i can say is that you are a proper musician. Little niggly health issues just don't matter to a true professional. Dave
  20. He can still sing and play with a broken ankle. I toured with a broken ankle back in 80's. Just meant i couldn't lift any of the heavy gear (what a shame) plus i had to stand in same spot most of the night. There's a lack of commitment and dedication these days Dave
  21. Bought a Pinegrove leather strap from Paul. Absolute gent, posted Thu arrived Fri morning. Strap is like new and even included the small Levy's wireless pouch which was ideal as i have one on my current strap. Comms was perfect, couldn't ask for a better seller. Cheers Paul. have a great weekend of gigs up here in Dundee and Arbroath. Dave
  22. 100%. I use my Sandberg VM4 for Glam covers band. Been using it for past 5-6 years now. No other bass feels as comfy and versatile for what i do. I use my Sandberg MarloweDK in Punk covers band and again no other bass seems to work for me and i've tried several. I bought both of those basses specifically for those bands and they work. Tried Jazz, Precision, Overwater, Fender PJ and just not comfy with them. I recently bought a Godin Shifter Classic PJ bass and i love the tone from it. Used it on a Glam rehearsal and it worked ok. Gonna try it on Sun night gig with punk band and see how it works out. I'll have the Marlowe with me in case i'm not happy. Dave
  23. Sade Smooth Operator is a fantastic song. Nice bass tone. Dave
  24. Great song. What key are you doing it in. / If i remember right it was Eb tuning and played on the E. I played that in one of my very first bands just after taking lessons back in late 70's possibly 78. Happy days Dave
