1. Thanks for your kind words, guys. It really is a superb instrument.
2. Some more pics from the Gitarre & Bass magazine shoot (07/2003) - these were obviously taken when the instrument was in new condition. It has some wear now. 4. Very nice! Good price too.
5. Gratuitous Blueburst pic, old version...
6. The early EBMMs from the mid-80s to mid-90s are fantastic instruments. This one looks to be in very good condition, featuring one of the classiest finishes, Trans Red, in its darkest, 'oxblood', version which you only see from 1990 onwards for a few years. Beautiful! If this stil has the original pickup and preamp... Epic bargain!
7.
I have the exact same bass, an 89, but a Stingray 5. Its going on sale too!
Which colour?
8. Looks great! My favourite era for EBMM basses as well. Is the black guard in the video the original one? Original case... I assume it's not the one in the photo? Do you have the original strap buttons? What's the weight?
9. Wow, great looking bass, just check out that birdseye! My favourite era for EBMM basses - I bet it sounds and plays amazing, too. What's the colour? (Can't decide between Teal and Blueburst from the pics.) It's a pity someone felt the need to drop an additional pickup into this gorgeous instrument. And as much as I admire Martin's and John's work at the Gallery, I sometimes wish they'd refuse certain jobs... :-)
10. I have yet to see an EBMM bass that has benefited from 'upgrading' its pickup or preamp. But if spending money on devaluing your instrument is your thing, go for it... (At least keep the original parts.)
11. Looks like this one has been played a bit! (Which can only be a good thing, of course.) The early reissues have gone up in value a fair bit over the years, so do yourself a favour and post some better (higher resolution) pics... It would be beneficial to see the neck pocket, neck plate, pickups under the covers, back of the headstock etc.
12. Got a pic of the neck pocket?
13. Bass Gallery in Camden is the bass place to visit in London.
14. Is that Trans Teal? Looks great! Could you be more specific about the weight?
15. Has anyone had a chance to try these out yet? Produced in collaboration with Markbass. There's a combo and also a separate head and cab version: http://stringsandthings.co.uk/musicman_amps.html http://www.thomann.de/gb/music_man_bh_500_head.htm http://www.thomann.de/gb/music_man_810_bs.htm They look tempting!
16.
The Fender Bass-an Illustrated History by Black & Molinaro, as stated above is the best all bass book. The Fender Bass by Klaus Blasquiz is pretty poor, cheap....for a reason! Fender-The sound heard around the world by Smith, is a good Fender company history reference book Fender-The golden age by Kelly is really good book showing all of Fenders work from '46 -'70. Fender-The inside story by Forest White is another good Fender history book Fender Precision Basses '51 to '54 by Detlef is also great, but only covers the earliest models How the Fender Bass changed the World by Jim Roberts is good, but again lots of reference and history lots of others, but they are the mainstream ones I would recommend the top one, it pretty much covers everything you are likely to need, on Fender basses, great detail, reference, dating info, and of course some fine GAS inducing pics.
What Rick said. Bass Culture: The John Entwistle Bass Collection also features some tasty Fenders.
17.
And obviously these basses should NEVER be passed off as the real thing (but if, as some people suggest, it's a £150 bitsa attacked by a belt sander, that shouldn't be possible anyway).
At least the Limelight finishes don't look much like the originals which in this context has to be a plus. Whereas the Bravewood guy is pretty good, especially when he goes easy on the termites.
18.
I would say the second the Fender logo is applied it steps from replica to counterfeit, I would think that is a good description of a counterfeit instrument
This. I remember seeing a Bravewood replica of a '66 Fender Jazz on Ebay some time ago, where the photos showed that the builder had also faked (sorry, I mean replicated) stuff like the neck date stamp - in other words, components you can't actually see unless the instrument is dismantled. I'm not implying any intent to deceive but once an instrument changes hand a few times over the years, it could get messy if someone tries to pass it off as original, possibly out of ignorance.
19. Great looking bass in one of my favourite EBMM finishes. Great price too!
20. Yes, the finish is original. It's called Metal Flake Green and they only made it for a short time around 1999/2000. I read somewhere that it wasn't very popular... I love it!
21. Link doesn't work.
22. Great, thanks! Is the weight with covers on or off?
