Had to busk this tune on a dep gig last - just about pulled it off, (albeit in a simpler way!) Listening this morning to the original recording, am really impressed with the bassline and playing. According to Wiki, it was Nick Massi who played on the 1965 version - never heard of him TBH, great player though! Only done this once recently, and regretted it! Played at a charity organised by a friend of mine at large city hall. Got there mid afternoon to soundcheck,with my bass rig in the car outside to be used if necessary. There was a Fender bass combo (cant remember which one) on stage available, so played the soundcheck with it and thought it would be okay for the gig later, saving me a long load in! Of course, the gig was a completely different scenario to the soundcheck, levels from all other stuff onstage a lot higher. Plus all the previous bands had obviously encountered the same thing, meaning poor little combo had taken a right hammering all night. We were last on, so by that time the speaker was flapping like mad, ruining for me what should have been a jolly set. So lesson learnt for me...........

Built out of firewood, but who cares?

+1 for the Precision Lyte route. I made the swap to these (after having sold one years ago, duh!) and it's made all the difference to my gigging enjoyment. Currently a very tidy one on ebay in Shrewsbury for £349 BIN too. Good luck!

Danelectro Longhorn - superb things! Try and get an earlier Korean one, they crop up on ebay every now and then for around £150/£200. Only one sound, but its fantastic! Plenty of 50's/60's thumpy vibe but with a hint of twang too. Used by Jack Bruce, Entwistle etc.

Danelectro Longhorn player here - great short scale bass for not a lot of dosh. I also play a Stingray and a Precision and don't have any trouble swapping between the different scale lengths, it is quite interesting as it can make you have a slightly approach which can be a good thing! Always quite fancied an Ibanez AB semi too, although for some reason have never wanted to go down the Fender short scale route - Mustang etc.

Not a GM fan myself (too widdly for me), but nevertheless interesting to see that Eric Clapton's upcoming new album is going to contain a version of 'Still got the blues' apparently. And yes, does n't seem like 2 years since his very premature demise.

Worked with The Troggs in the late 80's - lovely set of blokes, especially Reg who was great company, very funny and not at all big-time. RIP reg.

[/quote] Was recently looking a bit dodgy for Fopps, who were owned by HMV. However, looks like they've managed to survive this - good news as a great shop for a browse. I always end up in there for at least an hour, and usually come away with lots of stuff (at great prices).

Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes - my favourite band over the last 35 years. Every night different, great original material and always some interesting covers thrown at you to keep you on your toes. (And a blasting horn section too.) Others - The Stones - know most of the stuff, and love Keith & Charlie's playing. Chuck Berry - just to see if I could pull it off! The E Street Band - awesome gig.

A wise local muso once told me that most people spend 6 months trying to get their new guitar/amp to sound exactly like their old one. Many a true word etc................

Fender Precision Lyte? Very underated bass, even if you don't get on with actives.

Use a Fender 34" scale for most of my stuff, and a Danelectro Longhorn 30" scale for a weekly pub gig. No problems using both, (although wouldn't like to have to reverse their roles!)

One of my first gigs in the early 70's - Hull City Hall. Andy Powell/Ted Turner/Martin Turner & Steve Upton line up. Great band, with a lot of Orange kit on stage IIRC. All used proper guitars too, and sounded brill. Martin Turner's band are coming to Hessle Town Hall in early March - about 100 yds away from my house! Hope to go if I'm not working.

More love for Behringer - I have a BD121 DI box thing (basically a Tech 21 Bass driver copy) which was I think around £25. Sounds great & daft for the money ( although not the most durable buld quality.) Peavey old school stuff - just great. Mark 111/1V heads still around, they just keep on going and you can get them fixed should anything go wrong (unlikely). Shame they weigh a ton etc......
