1.
It's interesting that a lot of us long-term Rush fans still love the band but are not keen on their recent material. The cut-off point may vary (for me they became inconsistent after Roll the Bones, but I still really like Test for Echo. I just can't get away with the last two studio albums). To me it just feels that they have become rather stagnant and are going through the motions to a certain extent. Back in the seventies and eighties, and even into the nineties, every new album had something new or different to it's predecessors. Not any more IMO. What does that say about us as fans or indeed about the band themselves? I wonder if there are fans of 'modern' Rush who hate the earlier stuff? I guess there must be, but I'm yet to meet one!
I'm an oooh, 30 year long Rush fan, & like both the old & the new stuff they've done. Actually, it's a couple of bits in the middle I'm unsure about - have struggled to really like 'Presto' as an album & 'Dog Years' off of 'Test for Echo' is the worst song they've ever released...... 'Secret Touch' off 'Vapor Trails' is a song I listen to a lot, & I reckon 'Far Cry' from 'Snakes & Arrows' is up there with the best songs Rush have written. After such a long career & with so many varied sounds & styles, I can understand why somebody wouldn't be into all their albums though. (PS: my son is 20 & has 'Tears' from 2112 & 'YYZ' on his iPod. Ok he's not an out & out fan, but there's a young 'un liking a bit of the older stuff!!)
  2.
Some good early footage of Ged and the boys. Love the Rick, pity it was effectively retired for many years. I'd love to know what happened to that Steinberger bass he played for a short while in the 80's???? He is one awesome bass player - maybe not as good as he used to be but still great!
Yep, parts like Malignant Narcissism & the breakout part of Caravan for example clearly show a bass player in decline........
  3. I am giving an '80's bass some long overdue TLC. I would like to make a better job of screening the control & pick up cavities. The bass is black so it would look a neater job if the screening paint was black too. Could anybody suggest a good quality brand? Thanks in advance. Wilco.
  4. I've just acquired one of these which is a little beat up & needs some TLC to get it playable. I wonder if someone could help with a control query. There is a three way toggle switch on the bass which I believe is a pick up selector. There are also two, two-way toggle switches which are I think a 'dual sound' switch & a coil tap. With both the two way switches down & with three way switch set at either up or middle I get sound. With all three switches in the down position there is silence.... If I then put the most rear-ward two way switch up (coil tap). I get a thin sound from I think the back pick-up. Not sure of that's by design but it feels like a fault. Anyone got one of these (or the ZZB model) & could let me know if the above mirrors their instrument? Many thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Silver Mav withdrawn from sale - I've been playing it & it's just too good to go so I've decided it's a keeper. Absolutely crazy value for money. Now having a wobble on selling the Orange one............. I think I might be indecisive i'm not sure, might be. Possibly........... For now, still for sale though - £195 as per previous post.
  8. Oooh look, fat bassist What? You want to see up my nose? Gigging in the middle of a field outside Tetbury. (Wasn't at all worried about electrical safety. Much...)
  9. Have a "f**k me, that's a lovely looking bass & why oh why haven't I got £900" bump. Someones GOT to buy that surely......
  10. 5 for me. 5 strings should be the new bass standard!! Anything lower than a B would be too flappy to play & anything higher than a G is just pointless. (Are ERB players just frustrated guitarists? Just go get a baritone guitar if you need those high notes & want to play chords - leave the low zone to those who like groove!!)
  11. Here's some of my faves: YYZ - Rush Digital Man - Rush Vital Signs - Rush Malignant Narcissism - Rush It's possible that a might be a Geddy Lee fan..............

    Consensus on Tuning
I have mine (Korg Pitchblack) last so I can mute any extra noise from distortion pedals (although my whole rig is really quiet, even in a poorly earthed rehearsal space). If I were to get delays like the post above, I might consider moving it.
Ditto: I have a Korg Pitchblack to & it also sits last in my effects chain. All my pedals are true bypass, so it gets a good signal & mutes all but one of my pedals if I need it to. (Bass Big Muff Pi sits between instrument & amp, whereas all my other pedals go via the effects loop).
  13.
Bump! I'm quite interested in something 5 string, probably active! Had lots of interesting offers so far that I'm mulling over
PM'd
  14. I've only recently discovered Basschat (thanks for the pointer Pete at The Academy of Sound), but I am spending way to much time on here already..... (especially on the market place... ) 'Tis all good though!
Just out of interest what is the scale length of the S5's?
Hi, The scale length is 34 inches. The B string is kept at a good tension due to the angled headstock. Cheers, Wilco
Hi, just a little tip for posting the photo's. Go to the album and hold the mouse over the picture and a little box pops up around it with a button that says 'share|copy', under that it says 'IMG code' and next to it a box with some code in it. Click on that code and it's automatically copied. Then when your typing your post here, just hold down Ctrl and press v on the keyboard and the code will be pasted like so; [ IMG ]http://i952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/paulwilcock/Maverick%20S5/CIMG2796.jpg[ /IMG ] but without the spaces. When you submit your post the code will show up in the thread like this:
You are indeed a top banana - many thanks for the tip & original post amended accordingly! Thanks again.

'Erm, Photobucket newbie here! I've just listed an amp & now think the link I've posted for that is the same as the one on this listing. Bottom rightish of the screen there is another album which has has the Mav pics in!! (hopefully....) The bass is the one in my profile pic (with the pesky Levy's strap on...............).
  20. Brilliant little practice amp that I am just not using anymore (main rig now smaller so use that instead). 60 watts Passive/Active inputs Mid scoop button 4 band EQ CD in Pre amp out Power amp in Headphones out Line out I have owned from new. http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews82917.html To heavy for posting really - happy to drive up to an hour from Swindon to deliver or meet up.
  21. There is a possibility that I may be buying a bass from another basschatter, but should I do that I will need to generate some funds first! As a result, for sale is my much loved Maverick S5 (in fact I have two of these!). In case you have never heard of Maverick, they were a British manufacturer that closed it's doors a couple of years ago. If you have heard of Maverick then you will already know of their reputation of producing excellent guitars & basses that punched massively above their pricepoint. About this one in particular, I bought it from a local guy early in 2007. Condition wise it did suffer from an incident of strap failure in 2008 which has caused some cosmetic issues, but in absolutely no way at all effects playability or sound which is why I have been happily using it since. Condition then: headstock is fine, neck is fantastic - excellent fretwork, no sharp edges & I cant find a deadspot. Body - the finish has slightly rubbed away (thanks to a Planet Waves locking strap) on the top bout (covered up by the strap). Around the jack socket on the back lower edge of the body is where the majority of the cosmetic issues are - there is a chip through the finish & a couple of cracks in the finish. There is a 3cm crack in the finish (which is difficult to see unless close up) on the front of the body by the rear volume control. All these were caused by the same strap failing incident as the bass has been very well looked after generally. Other than this, there is the usual bucklerash. Despite this, as you can see from the pictures, it still looks great. Component wise the instrument scores very highly :- two piece American Alder body, Canadian rock maple neck, AAA Indian rosewood fretboard, Maverick branded Gotoh tuners & an ABM bridge. Active circuit with adjustable gain trimpot in the body cavity (foil lined & paint screened) & 3 band EQ. It's got a natural woody tone, but add some bass & treble & reduce the mids it can sound thunderous!! One other thing to note is the narrow string spacing which just aids playability once you get used to it. The new RRP on these was originally £599 & as I write, there is a used one for sale on Ebay for over £400. Due to the cosmetics I am selling this for £195 which is a steal. I just cant think of another 5 string active bass that will get close to this one in terms of ease of playing, sound & quality components for that kind of money. I would rather deliver or meet up with a buyer instead of trusting a courier. Happy to travel up to an hour away from Swindon at no extra cost.
  22. The failure of the LG350's fan to work properly is a common problem with this amp - it's why mine was returned to the retailer with a refund request after it cut out on me. I've also had an LG1000 go up in smoke.............. Good that some people have found a work around by adding feet, but personally I wouldn't have felt comfortable gigging with an amp with a known technical issue. If it helps, I've heard of a few people attaching clip fans to the top of the amp somehow, & leaving these running all the time to keep the amp cooler.

  24. I don't know if they still sell it, but I used an EP1500 for a while. It was surprisingly good to be honest. Very loud, noise free, & a very transparent clean sound. I read somewhere an article by an electronics engineer who said that model was well put together too - certainly mine was totally trouble free. (I coupled that with their Bass V-amp pro - ran two Ashdown cabs in parallel as both the EP1500 & V-amp had two channels. I recall in someway using the EP1500 low pass filter too on one channel & on the 'Rock 2' setting of the V-amp, I ended up with a pretty good & usable 'Ampeg' like sound. I have a Hartke/Ashdown (different cabs) rig now & tried a few others in between, but I wouldn't say that Behringer set up was a dog. It did alright for the money)
