Hello
hey tet, hows it going? cheers for the welcome, keep in touch, looking forward to hearing the new stuff, Al keeps mentioning it on twitter.
Should be good mate, once we get ourselves up and running again! Got a few gigs the end of the month, and then the album launch in Feb. What's going on with The Dead End Kids?
  2. Tet

    Hello

Gui?? Alright mate, it's Tet from The Trestles! Welcome in...
  3. See now, normally what I do is focus on something in the distance - A light, a familiar face, the sleepy-looking "sound tech"... I find that if I try not to get in the way of what my brain wants my hands & vocal chords to do, everything just runs along nice and smooth. Quite a few songs where I'm playing a bass line in one rhythm, and singing a completely different melody in another rhythm (since I sing harmonies). It does work, and I'm lucky enough that I can pick them up near enough instantly, once I've heard the song through once or twice. I did have someone from another band come up to me after our set and say something along the lines of "Man, you were playing one thing but singing something else there - How the f**k?!"
  4.
Ooh, I got a mention, sweet. I do indeed use a Turbo Rat, at the moment it's my main distortion. I absolutely love it, I think the distortion "character" (that sounded less poncy in my head...) is perfect for a bass distortion. It's not transparent like an Overdrive, the only real distinction in sound you'll get is between fingers and a pick (which is actually a big difference). But it's not as full on as a fuzz. I use a blender with it, but I wouldn't say it's necaserry, it depends what kind of sound you want. Max (silentfly) does bass mods to the Turbo Rat. I'll try and record some clips when I get the time.
Have actually (without looking at this until just now) been checking out Turbo Rat mods this evening. Basically (bass-ically?) what I'm planning on doing is getting my hands on the M80, but if I can get hold of a modded Turbo Rat too, and compare/contrast... Hmm. My thanks for all your replies so far guys, it's been very helpful in narrowing down the field to just a few options! M80, Turbo Rat Mod, or Fulltone Mosfet, I'm thinking.

    Consensus on Tuning
I have a roadie that takes care of all that rubbish for me. Truckstop
Hahahahaha, +1 NICE.
  6. Hi all, Been debating with a couple of mates, and we can't find a general consensus, so I'm going to ask anyone with a minute or so to tell me: Where do you prefer your tuning/tuner pedal/device to be, in your effects chain? Front, or back? Or maybe even stuck in the middle... Anyone?
  7.
I wouldnt recommend the Blowtorch if you want distortion. Its a great electric sounding fuzz but I dont think thats what you're after. From what you're saying, id put my money on the earlier suggestion of the MXR M-80 DI. Its a harsh, slightly clunky distortion that works well in the mix, plus the blend and all the other features it has makes it a very useful pedal. I used to have a Turbo Rat too. I found it better for a low gain gritty kinda sound, but it really needs a mod or to be put in a blend if you want to keep any low end.
+1 You hit the nail on the head! For the OP, anyway. It's not really Fuzz I'm after...
  8. That MXR M80 D+ is looking like a winner. Plenty of room to get your perfect sound. Although, I'm also a BIG fan of the Fultone Mosfet Overdrive.
  9.
justin Meldal-Johnsen also uses a Swollen Pickle, probably worth checking out some of his output. Here's a picture of his board which he has up on his flickr account.
Amazing! Thank you, that's great info there.
Have you thought about changing your amp,or getting a multi effect unit?
I love the tone of my amp, and I'm not a fan of the multi-fx units, they never seem to sound as pure as a dedicated pedal. I'm not going for too over-complicated. Just a quality distortion, but thanks to you all, I've got some ideas now. =]
  10.
The bassist from Russian Circles uses a Swollen Pickle EDIT: He's also got an old big box proco Rat on there. I think bobbass4k on here uses a Rat, he'd be able to give you more info.
Russian Circles - Damn' near perfect. =D Cheers man.
  11.
I've found my Rat cuts through really well on guitar, better than any other pedal I've tried. I've not tried it on bass but Finbar is nabbing mine for a jam next time he's in the practice room so maybe he can enlighten you after that.
Hmm, nice one man, I was wondering about using a Rat, but again, not heard of any bassist using one, don't know anyone who's got one that would be willing to lend it out either! Could you (or he) let me know how it goes?
  12. Welcome from a relative newbie to the site mate! Sounds good, you'll have plenty to contribute. Oh, and Gogol Bordello... Excellent stuff! Regards, Tet (Liverpool!)
  13.
At the moment i am using a way huge swollen pickle, and I can get lots of cunchy tones from that bad boy!
Yeah? Not heard of it being used by bassists before... Hmm.
TBH it's hard to get your distorted bass sound heard if the guitarists are also using distortion, unless you're much louder than they are or all three of you have pursued fuzz tones that let eachother be heard (which would be difficult enough even if you're actively trying to do it). It would be better to use distortion when they're not using it, if you want to be heard.
Try telling that to two trigger-happy guitarists It's not a major concern though.
  14. So... I'm getting involved in a 3-piece art-rock band. But I also play in a more standard rock band. What I need, then, is a distortion which will allow me to work with a Strat or Les Paul through a Fender amp (using my Stingray through an Ashdown MAG half-stack), and stand out in both situations. The more standard band has 2 guitarists, switching between tones quite a lot. I need to get my distortion parts HEARD! Have used an ODB-3 for a little while, but it didn't really stand out for me. Similarly, the Big Muff option is a little too broken up. I want a harsh distortion tone, with clarity & definition to it. Any advice would be welcome! Tet.
  15.
Alright matey! From your neck of the woods also, used to study at LIPA. Welcome on board. EDIT - Mythste, I didn't realise you were so close matey. I dep at Hannah's bar sometimes on a Thursday night with a mate of mine's band on Hardman Street, would be good to see you out one night!
Cheers man, I'm in Hannah's occasionally, will keep an eye out!
Guilty as charged. Alright Tet, was wondering when you'd turn up, welcome to the party! Always up for a geek-out, would be nice to put faces to some other names round here.
Hahaha, there he is. Brilliant shout getting me on here Mike! Also, I may have embroidered your words slightly when I quoted you in the OP. Think I was paraphrasing, rather than directly quoting, hahaha.
