Spotted on the Steingberger forum. It's not me nor do I know the guy. I'm assuming the email address will get you in touch. £6k+ mind ... http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/stein...d/message/41272 Steingberger XL-5W ('wide 5') Bass For Sale, London UK Posted by: "Low" lowregisterhead Sun Jan 31, 2010 6:32 am (PST) Hi all, and greetings from London. Offered for sale is my Steinberger XL-5W ('wide 5') bass. As most of you will know, these are incredibly rare, as they only made about 50 of them. There are some 5-string versions of the X-2 and XL-2 out there, which were basically standard width 4-string necks with head and bridge conversions to somehow cram the 5th string on, resulting in a very narrow string spacing, but the XL-5W was built as a 5-string, and therefore has a very comfortable 17mm spacing. The previous owner rescued it from a shop in the States, and had work done at Peekamoose in New York to make it beautifully playable. Cosmetically, it's in good condition, but not immaculate, and as such could be said to be primarily a player's instrument, although still extremely collectable. Included in the sale is a second unused Steinberger bridge, the original pickups and circuitry (a more recent EMG preamp and pickups are currently fitted), brass and aluminium string adapters for non-double ball end strings, a fitted flight case, a Ritter gig bag, and the original pivoting strap plate. It currently has an adapted NS Steinberger Boomerang strap system fitted, but this can be removed with an allen key, and the original plate refitted in seconds. Additional info and detailed pictures available on request to genuinely interested parties. Offers invited in excess of 6,000UKP.

So what about fire limits and 'elfin' safety? We play little Church halls well capable of holding 150 that have fire limits of 100 which are enforced by inspections. How can a venue ram so many people in on a regular basis?
Cheers, OldGit. Sounds daunting, but I'd be happy to do it! Presumably find out who'd be interested, find a central venue, etc. Did you have to charge a sub to cover venue costs, or did you find a place for free. Anything I'd need to be aware of? I'd appreciate any pointers from your experience please?? Oldslapper.
PM'd you might like to ask the more experienced guys too. Search for "bash" and you'll find a few others to ask.
I must have weird tastes in basses. The dearest bass I've bought was the epi T-bird at £270 despite playing every bass in the shop it was the only one I liked including fenders, 'rays and warwicks. Was out looking on Saturday played a real lovely looking squire jazz, natural finish, block inlays loved the look hated the feel. None of the expensive stuff tickled the eyeballs. The only bass I was tempted to buy was the Epi EB-0 from the starter pack. So tempted to order one online without the pack for a wallet busting £130. I can't imagine paying £900 for a bass mainly because I've seen one I liked !!!
Lucky.
But surely Rod Stewart's ability to put it slightly off key and make it work is what made him famous. I can't help but feel that the whole musical word is suffering from over production and the expectation of perfection. Music is still mostly (thankfully) produced by human beings after all. Personally I think a bit of humanity adds so much to recordings. Anyone with enough time, technology, and 'takes' can 'produce' perfection. To play a song live and get it mostly right, with some feeling takes real skill. Give me real live music with some flaws and personality over a perfect studio production anyday of the week.
There was a discussion on the radio this week about the blandness added by Protools operators who strive for perfection. I remember years ago someone asking Phil Collins about using drum machines. He is a fan of them but he pointed out that even with sampled drum sounds you still get the same thing each time. When he plays there are inftessimal differences between each hit that mak it "human" and nicer to listen to.
Naaa!! Noodling is for the kitchen, play a bass line.
That's an interesting point. I listen to a record like Maggie May and I think that, for once, the bassplayer got to have some fun without someone - singer or producer or guitarist, say - trying to restrain them and make them play root-5th.
I have to be honest and say that although a fan of a Soul/Motown music I have never really paid much attention to the band or James Jamerson during my time as a bass player. Recently though I have been watching Standing in the shadows of Motown on you tube (very poor until pay day and cant get the DVD in any shops near me) and it has blown my mind. Jamerson is just superb, so incredibly melodic and clever in the way he plays, it is a true inspiration. I have loved watching it so much I am going to invest a small amount of money and get it from Amazon. The whole band are superb and I just want to get myself a P bass with some flats on it and start learning what I can of his basslines. A genius, an inspiration and so sad that he is still not with us, imagine what he could have created.
Save up a bit more and get the book. You'll get a load more from that.
Absolutely... and for me, the record is all the better for it. I seem to remember that Ronnie Wood played bass on that track.
+1 Love the bass on Maggie may. Noodling is good.
-
Well, the bass has a few "bad choices" and drops out briefly towards the end, Rod Stewart is off key in places and most of the overdubbed lead guitar playing is very "lumpy" when starting and stopping.
Ah Ok I'll go back and listen again. I've loved it since it was first released though so I guess all that doesn' really make much difference I like a bit of human stuff in records. Too correct sounds horrible..

Yeah just do it. Don't worry about sh1111t111ng yoruself. That will all take care of itself earlier in teh day Just take a deep breath and get up there. You'll be amongst friends and you'll be fine. I bet you'll want to divorce your MP3 player and find a band afterwards
You could play your students Broken Dream by Python Lee Jackson. They make every mistake in the book but to be fair it was only a hastily recorded demo that would never have seen the light of day if Rod hadn't recorded Maggie May!
They do? Er, I've never noticed anything .. Can you eloborate? Ta I nominate whoever was on tuning checking on this one: Alto sax, 2:45 Wacks me in the ears every time ...
....and this thread is making me think 'no wonder so many relationships end up going down the pan when people can treat their so-called loved ones with such contempt/lack of respect/dishonesty etc'
yeah but I bet you went off to check Pete's bass cupboard for new additions
That'll be cool Si, looking forward to seeing it. I've always thought of W&T to be a bit of an Italian Fodera, guess the shoe fits Eude
Yeah I think they are very much in that department. Certainly they seem to produce many stunning basses that seem to fit the same sort of music and players. Jazz and jazz funk sort of stuff. They don't get many calls to make 4 string passive basses
-
Thanks for the update Si. It just annoying to know that there's other W&T basses out there that I can't see. I obviously catch all the ones that come through here or Bass Direct, but I'll bet there's a whole lot more. Your own particular entry is looking fantastic too, real understated class Eude
The new web design should allow for morre of that sort of thing. Mine's a custom so the Ergon is on the site but my specs are individual. I think they plan a "basses we've done" bit Basically you can have any body shape they do (the named basses) but with mods and changes. Mine has a few extra curves
