Some guy asked to have a play on my Kingbass at a wedding function...... wasn't happy when I said 'Ok, only if I can have a go on your mrs.... ' He wasn't that happy when he turned round to her and noticed that she had a big grin on her face....
Trouble is when the guy's thinks that's a good deal ....
. Who turns up to a jam night without an instrument anyway? Like turning up to play a football match without your kit.
If I you in the house band at a jam it's your responsibility to supply a bass and amp for jammers to use. That's just how it work around here Usally it's a Squier or somesuch and perfectly functional. However once I played a guy's orginal stack knob Jazz .. That was nice..

I've asked for detailed pictures of the normal stuff.
"what car do you drive?" "Porsche" came the reply,
Boxster then .. had it been a 911 the reply would have been "911" i never let anyone play my saxes, despite being asked more than for my basses. Just way too easy to damage... plus the business end goes in your mouth

When I was about 9 my sister's friend handed me his pale blue Fender Strat and that lit a fire.. I always let kids have a supervised go (young kids). Teens and older, it depends.... What that drummer did is totally inexcusable. Even if it was the crappiest bass in the world that's still outside of normal musician's etiquette.
On one occasion I arrived at rehearsal for a pantomime gig
Oh No You Didn't!

If you are seriously looking at this, go around, strip it, take pictures of the key parts and get them to Howard. (The Bass Doc) Everything can be faked but Howard will know... Incidentally the seller has not replied to my request for a serial number and more pictures.......

Looks Ok but then again No feedback... No serial number .... Normal procedures - ask for the serial number and specific images to see if he actually has it, then insist on trying it before the end of the auction, at least....

I didn't spot any crap spouting. I thought you were asking perfectly reasonable newbie questions and accepting the answers in an open and genuine way. No need to apologise.. You may get something from reading the WIKI though (look up there at top right of the pages on the site, near the Search function link)
yes this is quite a shock, there are still people out there who are friendly, helpful and not just out for what they can get, and even better they got something in common bass guitars. thanks elom
ha ha I think most of us are clustered here Nice one Elom
I just acquired two 'vintage' Fenders. Why? I am an old git and I wanted a bass to match.
Hummmmm Old Git signature basses .. Now there's a thought
Hi mate, I'd love to... hang on, actually If I could I'd have got my band to do it !!
Well that would be unethical. Booking us woudln't be, of course

I thought we were talking functions not pubs. Totally different markets / fee structure / expectations
... my company paid a major label 3-piece who are big fans of Buck Rogers about £7.5k for a 30 min set last year.
Gissa gig Mate. Go on. We could do that mate, We could, no really we could.
-
I'd suggest the minimum rate for a gig you want to do is £100 per person plus £100 for the band kitty, plus expenses. Remember that functions for people who are not your mates require a whole lot of attitude, behaviour and management that's different to originals/pubs/fun gigs. Read the wedding gigs thread linked from my sig. and work out how much money you want in your hand at the end of it to make it worth while. In the functions game you play for free. It's all the other sheeeeeeeet you get paid for.
Vintage Fenders do nothing for me. I'm going to make a bold statement and say that modern Fenders can do everything a vintage Fender can.
Except be worth a lot more in years to come....
You mean most vintage Fender buyers are sheep-like?
No that would be joining the flock.
-
I don't agree, vintage Fenders don't look any cooler than newer ones really, The fact it's a 1965 may make it "feel" like it looks cooler, i'll give you that.
Felling it's better is a large part of the appeal. As with many thing we like to join in with a prevailing belief (well lots do) so if the general belief is that a mojo'd 62 P bass in Jamerson sunburst with all orginal bits is considered a cool and valuable piece by enough people many more will agree to be part of the pack.
True, but at various times in the 70's, when the 50's and 60's players started dropping out and selling their gear, Fender basses were relatively cheaper than they’d ever be again!
Sure, but in real terms they were never as cheap as a US Fender is now.
-
No need to apologise Wishbone Ash's "Argus" is one of the classic bass player's albums. Seems that Martin Turner's status as a bass icon has slipped somewhet thogh "Martin has endorsed this auction and has even offered to sign the guitar if the winning bidder would like him to. If you would prefer it to remain unsigned however, this is also fine, just make your wishes clear at the close of the auction. "
What I don't get about the "vintage" market is how I completely missed the point of buying 60's Fender basses when they were cheap!! I still kick myself over that one!
They weren't cheap in the 60's. Fenders were an arm and a leg back then. You could buy a street in Chelsea for 5 shilling', of course, and all this were fields...
but it wasn't a vintage bass in the 60's and the sound a '64 Jazz made in '64 would be different to the sound it makes over 50 years later. The players using basses in the 60's were not using vintage instruments, therefore could not have had a vintage tone. The concept didn't exist.
Ah I see what you mean. Sure, as they mature and age they will sound different. They will always sound different to the records anyway as the strings, amps and fingers are all different too.
-
what I don't get is when people talk about players having a vintage tone. At the time they were not using vintage instruments.
Just as a '64 Jazz bass, for example, is a vintage bass, the sound it makes is also vintage. Re the vintage bass market, people confuse playability and desirability. The factors that make a bass desirable are many and varied but being a great player is not top of the list in the collectors' market which largely determins the prices.

No worries. Keep asking but check teh WIKI too .. If you are both amped you'll be loud enough. How will you be amplified? Individual amplifiers or through the PA?
