Wayne58 has a couple of W&Ts - he may be interested.
Cheers Al. Yep Cam's on the case. He has a gig that weekend but will come if he can. -
Bear in mind that an acoustic bass is not overly loud when played acoustically-an acoustic guitar will blow it away volume wise. Also,if your plugging in to an amp,I'd recommend buying a solidbody, especially for a beginner.
+1 I mentioned the volume problem in your previous thread on this. I appreciate that an acoustic bass looks better in the scenario you have drawn here but you really should not expect an unamplified acoustic bass guitar to be loud enough against an acoustic guitar and congas.. If gigs are amplified than you'll be fine. However why not build a tea chest bass? They are louder and funnier than an ABG..

A couple of lessons from a (human) tutor will be a lot better than any book and get you on track a lot faster.
Really not worried where a get together is. I only suggested shaftesbury as I can get a free venue, with parking, coffee bar, rooms for "jamming" with a drummer, luthier set up master class, quiet room for chat/dvd, large hall for showing off yer gear, local retailers with stands and local amenities. The thread has been going for a long time, but haven't seen anyone actually able to offer anything in the way of a venue or taking responsibility for organising it. These events don't just "happen", and if no one else can come up with a working alternative, then all I'm saying is I'm prepared to organise a get together. It can be called the mid-east-southwest bass bash if it helps?? I might just go ahead chuck some dates out, and see if anyone can make it anyway, if not then at least I'll stand a good chance of winning the raffle!
As a previous organiser I'd say this is gert lush list of good stuff (Especially teh "free venue" bit) so just go for it in Shaftsbury. If people want one elsewhere they should organise it there.

There are lots of petitions and things flying around about this. That is a good thing. Perhaps the government will listen and make licencing realistic My main concern is the effect of small venues that hold fundraising events like schools and church halls. The paperwork is enough to put off the event organisers, let alone any fee. I also think it's ill advised to keep saying "large screen sport isn't subject to the licence" as that will probably just add large screen sport to the list of things that need a licence, rather than remove the need for small music events, impromptu playing and that sort of thing from the license requirement.
Ah...I see what you mean now. How about some John Tams' stuff? He's the one that stars in Sharp and also sings the theme tune. His music is pretty damn good as it goes, real English folk.
Bit of a side track, I know but... Yes there are hours and hours of English folk and traditional tunes to play. However the problem is the perception of the audience. We play "Old Joe Clarke", for example and the Americans think it's theirs, the Celts think it's theirs and Ian Dury nicked it for Sex 'n' drugs and rock and roll (from an Ornette Coleman bassline) so is that an English tune anymore? Anyway it's hypothetical as we'd never agree to play the themed nights anyway. There are just too many opinions about what is right and what is not.
Err....how about The Who, The Jam, The Kinks, The Small Faces, The Stones, The Specials, Madness, Ian Dury...christ almighty they're all English. Why does everyone think you have to go back to Medieval times to celebrate your own culture??
Sure the English Song book is stuffed full with fine pop rock stuff .. However we're a Ceilidh band. We play rock too but the core of our music is English Ceilidh like The Princess Royal, Clompton Bridge, Pepper in the Brandy etc. English but the general public think they are Irish or Scots because they are diddly... That's my point. If we were a rock covers band there would not be this problem - and we'd not get the call asking us to play Burns/St Pats/Andrews/Georges night...
Quite so, OG. Did you mean 'Roots' by Show of Hands? If so, good shout: it describes my feelings about our attitude to our own musical heritage pretty well, even though I find Steve K a bit annoyingly winsome at times."Its my flag too, and I want it back..." Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5h4PFBuzvw [/back on topic]
I did indeed. Sums up the English song heritage situation rather well (as well as the idiocy of some parliamentarians) As an expat Englishman living in Wales (and playing deps with a Welsh band) I am made aware on a regular basis that the Celts have many tunes and songs associated with their roots but we don't.

We get asked every year as no one reads past the word "Ceilidh" on our website ... We are not Irish or Scots and we don't have a suitable show or set list, no really we don't. And by the way Mr Agent (for it's always a panicking agent a few weeks beforehand), we don't play St Andrews, Burns, St Davids or St Georges night either ... We got asked to play St Georges night "An English themed night" Er ... What would you play after Greensleeves and Roots? Most audiences think any diddly is Irish anyway ...

Acoustic basses with full bodies can't keep up with acoustic guitars (unplugged) so a Viola bass will have no chance.. you'll have to amplify it.
I do like the wt designs but the prices are way out if my league for the time being.
Mark Stickly has an answr to that one .. It goes something like "How many basses do you currently own? Why so many? Sell them all and buy one brilliant bass" I'm biased but I think he has a point .... -
I'm well surprised no-one else has posted on this! It'd be great to see some other W&T owners, and it would also be great to see other BC'ers and bassists who want to check these basses out. I'm planning to head down on the Sunday with my Chronos Klimt, my Zoid Hyperbass, and I will also take my Berg IP/EX stack with SFX preamp. It'll be a great day! Anyone else up for coming?
oh and I'll bring my Shuker P 5 too -
Thanks Si I'm getting as much practice as possible on it so that I can really do it justice at the get-together.
Oh blige! We don't have to do demos do we? I thought the real players could do that

I have a red Vox curly lead for my upright where I don't walk about a lot. It has a nice sound and great bag I have a Sennheiser invisible lead for when I do. That's a lot more money.... This Thread here is about the Fender Gold ironing leads and the difference in use.

No name hand painted (Humbrol paints usually used on my Airfix kits ) 335 style semi acoustic with the pickup and controls on a kind of floating scratchplate thing .... Loudness was provided by a "Baker" kit-built 30 watt valve head into a home made 1x15 cab lined with very scratchy loft insulation.
