Crowd goes wild. Sure we don't sound like the Proclaimers but no one seems to mind, even the ones in kilts (or anoraks )

 3. I have a remover's strap thing but it's not good for bass gear. It's really good for wardrobes and beds and things that don't have easy hand holds and handles. There's plenty of light gear around. In the olden days, when all this were fields, we had no choice but to use hefty gear and work around it. Many of us damaged our backs as keen young bucks showing off by lifting our 4x15 Marshall cabs onto one shoulder to walk home through the snow.... These days you can get good stuff that weighs a lot less or even very, very much less (Barefaced!) and it's been around long enough to come up second hand. If, however, your image dictates you to use big ol' heavy stuff then get a folding trolley like this one: £35 from Maplins and often in the sale there for less. Use your legs and not your back, avoid twisting whilst lifting and always get a hand lifting the stuff if you can. 9.
Now that we're already on the 11th page of effusive praise, I'd just like to observe that the power of branding is alive and kicking in the 21st century. A thousand pounds for a simple bit of wood and wire - just because it's made in the USA. Nothing wrong with the P-bass but it has less technology in it than a five quid box of Lego. They should be selling for about £250. What's the difference between a Squier and a made-in USA? Well, the Squier pickups I've measured (I've only measured half a dozen) were all underwound, and would produce a thin sound whatever you fitted them to. Funny that. (Yes, I know that's not conclusive, but I found it quite interesting). Branding. Market differentiation. Image. That's what Fender is all about. The Japanese showed 25 years ago that they could whip Fender's butt as far as product quality, consistency and price are concerned, but Fender had - and still has - the image. And that''s what people are buying when they buy Fender. Think Starbucks, Gucci, American beer. I thought you might appreciate a different perspective.
I took it to mean "Precisions" of any parentage rather than just branded Fender ones.
 10. +1 better earplugs and imagine how loud the ringing would be if you'd not used anything.. Also ask your band to play more quietly unless you were in final rehearsals for a gig.
 11.
The switch would switch the capacitor in or out. If switched out, then the tone pot works as a normal Precision pot - Cutting the usual frequency...whatever that is If switched in, then the capacitor changes the frequency that is being cut. If the pot is turned to full, then obviously, the switching makes no difference. I remember trying several different value cap's before deciding which to stick with. Very simple to do. Oh, and while I was at it, I added a series/parallel switch.
Ok. Ta I have one of these around here somewhere on a push pull. two different caps. This thing doesn't give you any variation on each cap though if I understand it. You just get 5 or 6 different settings and that's it. Most P bass players I know use two tone settings - full on and full off - so I guess anything else is overkill
 12.
If they put out an eye each and start playing an out-of-tune piano, they could be the Honky-Tonky Winky Wonky Donkeys.
Surely to wink you need two eyes so that part would be unnecessary

 14.
Had a brainstorming session with the band recently trying to find a good name. There was a little <ahem> booze involved so some fairly silly ones got thrown around and put on the list too. The following day it fell to me to search google, Myspace, and general interwebs to see if any of the suggestions were already taken. For giggles I put in the silly ones too. I was REALLY SHOCKED to see what some actual real gigging bands out there are calling themselves
ha ha yeah shocking isn't it. When Them Crooked Vultures were peddling their stuff around recently someone asked JPJ about the name. He'd obviously answered this question about 300 times that day .. His well versed answer was "everything else was already taken" Sums it up really.
 15.
Well I better excuse myself for saying I couldn't be arsed, and no it's nothing to do with wearing an attitude, I just knew in the back of my head that this varitone was something that would fall in the gimmick category and that maybe 1 bass player out of 10 might like. If it was any good, I am sure I would have heard of by now. But I haven't heard any such talk of varitone around the campfire of other respectable players. When you've got a good bass and amp, you have all that you need and to retrofit, any add-on bits would be like putting go faster stripes on a punto, but to me it's more like fitting a roof rack on a Rolls
I know what you mean but if you have a P that works fine as a P but is also capable of other things, why not. Is it so different to adding a J pickup?
 16.
In the time it took you to write that post you really could've Googled it...but, I guess you knew that - it's an attitude thing - I understand. Many years ago I fitted a simpler, DIY type, to a Precision, which was basically a micro switch and capacitor connected to the tone pot. It was very effective and is still on the bass today.
What did it do?
 17.
I love it! Si, you're the voice of common sense and I salute you, Sir!
Sorry that was a bit oldgittish but it just caught me at a bad moment.
 18.
I have no idea and can't be arsed to google, what's a varitone, an add-on preamp circuit?
Be arsed to google .. It's hardly taxing
 19.
Awesome, movies about Dury and the Feelgood's in the same month. Wide-scale recognition at last for some real music greats C
Radio too. Check out 6 music for listen again for the Ian Dury and Blockheads story and gig from '79. broadcast on Saturday last.
 20.
My RnB/Soul band's first gig was supporting Wilko Johnson back in the mid 00's. The bass player was a propper scary looking bloke. Had an AWESOME jazz. Amazing bunch of guys. Would like to see that.
Did he look a bit like this? Just asked them to bring the film (at least ) to Cardiff.
 21.
I can't believe Fender have never reissued this bass, as IMO it's one of the best sounding ever. And really easy on the bad back.
The Zone was pretty close but that's gone now too.
 22.
like OldGit said you could learn brass quite easily as good mutes exist (OG's picture bears no relation to the actual mutes for Trumpet)
That's 'cos its a case made for silent practice for a saxophone Much harder to keep a sax quiet 'cos the sound leaks out of the side holes The silent brass system looks like this
 23. Yamaha Silent Brass system sorts your trumpet, e-sax silent sax practice case things or just lock yourself in the coat cupbard or airing cupboard and play into them. That's what I used to do. I'm currently learing the harmonica, having lessons and practice in the car but it's fairly quiet. Good fun and alot easier to whip out at a jam than a bass.
 24.
How's your latest project coming along Si?...
Any minute now, aparrently Should be in one piece very soon. It has to hang for a week for settling. Should be here for my gig on the 30th, I am told.
 25. Sold@@@@ £55. Can ship but it's a bit large for cheap shipping solutions. Some delivery possibilities as Bristol, Wiltshire. Gloucestershire are all coming up on the gig trek list. Plus Heathrow area using "Guitarist's-Car" couriers This is a great idea. A light weight combo case that protects your combo but also has dolly handle and wheels to roll it in from your van and across the dance floor to the stage. Once you get to the stage the rolling case is strong enough to stand your combo on (as you can see in the image) so you can hear yourself. Saves taking an amp stand as well. It's designed for it and has rails to stop your amp falling off If your Combo is the same size or less than: (width)635mm (depth) 305mm (height) 495mm it will fit in this case. There's a zipped front pocket for cables. Very good condition, Only used a few times and still has its sale tag. More details here http://www.flightcasewarehouse.co.uk/music...sp?id=2834-3416 These are stock pictures and the Combo is not included, naturally!
