Our drummer's been off in India for a month, and me and the guitarist's job is to use the time to chase up some gigs whilst he's away. Guitarist hasn't been much use, so looks like it's down to me. I'm about to start a full-on offensive against the pubs of Cornwall, how do you fellows go about getting gigs?
I was thinking about this. One thing we may have missed .. if you are going BACK to places you played before - and the drummer usually does the calling - you just have to say "[drummers name] is away and asked me to call you for some more dates" That should do it, assuming you went down well/filled the place last time..
The lyrics are superb. They really make the best use of Anderson's incredible voice. Making 'sense' outta them is kinda fun too. I still have the 1st 4 albums and reckon they lost it a bit (not all) after CTTE.
I didn't say I didn't enjoy them I just had a laff too And as Bilbo says, They aren't really lyrics .. One of my faves from that period is their version of Paul Simon's America ..
I think I replied to your post in another thread about good bassline/bad songs. We must be old git's of a similar age! I had them all from Yes> Tormato. I only have the Yes album on vinyl left now. I even had all of the solo albums of Yes members including Jon Anderson's Olias of Sunhillow. Oh dear!
ha ha Yeah well tahts what teenagers did back then Lonestar? Not a mate of Kenny Driscoll are you?
What spares exactly do you have?? I'l give my mate a shout, and see if he needs any on his...
Bridge, strap pegs, covers (wth BIG BIG screwholes for some reason, finger rest, some screws, string tree and some other bits.. I'd have to look in the box to remember everything I also have the tortie scratch plate (but it's in seven carefully crafted and shaped pieces - ah the misdeeds of yoof) idea for repairs and patching. They are loaded with mojo and I'm afraid I do know what they are worth so they will be at serious, "collectors" prices ... I've got the 62 p pup too. That's my pension sorted. I also have the bridge from a '82 period US '62 re-issue p and some covers from about the same period but I suspect they are not Fender pieces. PM me if you are interested OG
Just a small point on Jon Anderson's lyrics. As a Yes fan through the 80s, (I came to it around the time of the 'Tormato' LP), I am familiar with everything they did up to '90125' and could probably recite acres of Anderson lyrics without any effort. There has always been this thing about how s*** his lyrics were and how they didn't make sense. The thing is, they weren't supposed to. Anderson long ago made it know that his concept was to string together words that sounded pretty/poetic etc i.e. the sound of the word was as important as, if not more important than, its meaning. The meaning of his lyrics is, therefore, impressionistic rather than a narrative. If you bear that in mind, it all makes a bit more sense (or not, depending on what you mean). As I understand it, Jon Anderson's lyrical concept is not a million miles away from James Joyce's 'Ulysses'. Yes played some really great music and although some of it got a bit bloated sometimes, much of it was highly original and innovative. 'Going For The One' was always a favourite for me.
My full on YES period was between the first album (the one with YES on it as apposed to "The YES Album" - oh that caused some problems when sent shopping ...) and Tales ... Laugh with me now children as we view one of the side effects ... The lyrics were always daft and /or pretentious and delivered with such full on "sincerity" that despite Jon's attempts to justify them as "sound pictures" etc we all still sniggered behind our hands .. His voice didn't help, a problem he shares with Geddy IMHO .. However I still put the CDs on and sing along

As you can tell, I've never got round to studying the song/players, let along 'scribing it Thanks for the correction!
"overplaying?"

'(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay' - What a great line...
OldGit replied to wateroftyne's topic in General Discussion
It's a minor detail, I know, but those little gaps are inspired. And most bass players I've seen covering the song play right through them. Shame.
Ah, the power of space in the bass ..... -
Want any spares? I have a box full of 1962 P bits ....

Well the prize for brilliant bass and utter tripe lyrics just has to go to Yes .. "Battleships confide in me and tell me where you are, Shining, flying, purple wolfhound, show me where you are, Lost in summer, morning, winter, travel very far, Lost in losing circumstances, that's just where you are."

The strings at the start of Elbow's Day like this evoke a strong feeling of melencoli in me and various other people I have asked. I am guessing it's the harmonies they are using. So ... can anyone suggest what the harmonies on it are and maybe how the feelings are evoked by them? think it must be more than just A minor or whatever ... Here's the video http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=SQIdXKz4sE8
For me its anything by level 42. Great playing but I have never 'got' the songs. Steve
ha ha I'm the opposite .. Some great songs mired by MK's "tuned percussion" .... IMHO, of course ... Lady in Red... I avoided paying it any attention at all until someone pointed out recently that it's Pino on bass.. then I braved the puke inducing contribution by Chris and his eyebrows and listened to the bass .. fab!
Optical, not digital. LED shines at light dependant resistor - the brighter the LED the higher the resistance of the LDR and the greater the compression. Alex
Mea culpa.. I thought it was "optical Vs digital". So, what I mean is... there's a significant difference between: "Whatever the type like the the Dave Hall VT-1 does to the sound" vs "Whatever the ones built into things like Peavey, Trace Elliot etc combos does to the sound"
Not long finished my first public appearance at an open mic night at the Music Club in Aberdeen. I was pretty poor (I have the excuse that I only heard one of the songs for the first time a couple of hours previous) but we got some applause from the 30-odd folks there so it can't have been all bad. 5 years of pretending to play bass it took to get here. I can only improve from here.
Hey well done. I do jam nights on a regular basis and there's always something I've not heard before (usually something "new" - Blink 182 album track? eh?) ... So I note down the title of anything that comes up like that and come home and watch it on youtube - it's almost always there, and then next time I'll have a bit of a clue how it goes ..
