5. A rare Thursday night outing for the band. Children's hospital ward staff Christmas do with staff of all types, nurses, docs, radiographers, admin people, etc Keen crowd, great hall and stage, full band (both Daves for once - Dave I on guitar, Dave II on guitar/keys/mandolin) Great fun. We wheeled out all the old Christmas songs and tunes ... many carols were based on dance tunes originally, apparently, so lots just fit the dance pattern of bars, and movements, and just slide in alongside the normal stuff. Dave II had learned Mike Oldfield's In Dulci Jubilo solo so that got an airing. I get to play recorder on that one for a few verses The stage had a few blocks hanging around so we made up a drum riser and I put my little stack up there too so great audibility all night for me. Very enjoyable though it feels odd today as it's not Saturday :~)
  6. Oh coooooool Steinberger: Officially Very dub Pleased to see you get one after your wait
  7.
Current bid £4.61. Has no-one contacted the seller yet? He said that if anyone knew for sure that it is not genuine, he'd amend his listing.
He did?
  8.
+1 About as appealing as a ginger stepson..........
is that one in your avatar? ^..^ I like the JP90's in black on black .. looks a bit weird with the contrasting plate ..
  9.
Tis a scratchplate that Yamaha supplied with the bass, but not many players bothered to fit them! Will.
errrrr how does that protect the frets? Perhaps 2x18 will take a pic when it arrives?
  10. "Optional fret protection acrylic board. Not used, still has protective film on" What's that then?
  11.
Just received a red one - all very nice and prongs went in perfectly. But how are you supposed to use the (single) strap button on the back of the neck? As a bass guitarist, I can't work out the significance of a single strap button.....
I hang my lead off it so I don't stand on it and yank it out
  12. Excellent catch ... The seller still has the pole dancing shoes if you like doing business with him/her
  13.
'As for celeb attendees we could always ask Stuart Clayton - nice chap and Devon based. ' Thats not a bad idea. Do you think he would be up for it? So, is everyone happy with Bristol? or should we have another poll? Cheers matt
Isn't Bass Guitar Mag based there? Maybe they'd chuck in a few quid or ex-demo Roscoes as prizes for the rafle
  14.
avon pretty much doesnt exist anymore, bristol is a county on its own
Yeah for about 10 years, (this time. It was a county of its own for many years before Avon) ... You live in CUBA now - Counties that Used to Be Avon +1 for Bristol or one in SE Wales, but not on the same day

+1 for teh Yamaha kit. Very nice stuff. We've got a Yamaha 8 channel mixer amp and some antique EV 200 speakers for FoH with a little Mackie 12 channel mixer running into two of the channels on the Yamaha, one for FoH and one for monitors. That gives us 16 channels in a small package. For monitors we have one passive running off the monitor amp side of the mixer amp and two powered wedges daisy chained from the monitor line out... Last time we hired in it was £120 for two big power amps and a 16 channel mixer plus tops and bins Foh and 4 monitors. We used our own mics and stands and had to work the knobs ourselves. Oh, I forgot, that was with two T bars of lights too as ours were not ooomphful enough for the gig.. ... I guess we're talking about something a bit more sophisticated Last PA we hired with a engineer was about £200
  16.
Haven't bought a bass from a shop for over ten years so I haven't really had much experience of many of them in Bristol, but I'd try Heron Music in St.George. Fella who runs it (Dave) is really nice helpful guy, he's also a member of Killing Joke's roadcrew!
Dave still in business then? Good oh!
  17.
There's always Reverb. OK, it's not exactly inspiring but a beginner friend of mine recently bought one of those Squire starter packs and it's not a bad deal for the money.
Aaaaaaaaargh! no starter packs! Total waste of good money. Or at least wait til after Christmas and get one used (but not much) from Trade it... You can get those starter pack amps for bu66erall in cash converter but he's better off spending enough to get a reasonably loudish combo so he doesnt have to upgrade when he getsto play little gigs. +1 on learning right handed from the start. There's loads of lefties playing right handed on here and in Famous Rock Land.
  18.
Hey Foxen, Sounds good - I'll pass the offer on. I've posted a few pedals to that flat, I think. And Joe has one of my old basses. Only problem is that this kid's a lefty - there just aren't as many bargains out there!
Aahh NOW you tell us.. There's a handful of sinister basses and guitars in that used gear shop opposite The Prom. I didn't look too hard but there were two or three OK used leftie basses in the back room last time I was there, and a few left handed amps () Take Mr Foxen up on his incredibly kind offer and go for a look..
  19. I expect the Wizard guy will wire it all up for you if you ask him. He's very helpful. Incidentally if you are new to soldering I'd recommend a Maplins gas sodering iron kit for about £20. It transformed my soldering from useless to fine...
  20.
Or just about any night of the week, but hang on a sec, if your constantly going past Bridgwater why haven't you ever considered stopping by and try and sedcue into that omnious sect that is Shuker?
"Do you want me to seduce you? Is that what you are asking?"
Dunno, is the simple answer. We hire from our mates down at our practice rooms, tell them the size of the gig and they give us whatever they think is best. I've seen them take £20 off us before, as long as it's back the same night. Does the job.
OK Mates rates are a bit different. I'd bet if I phoned them for a little FoH + Monitors PA for a night it would be closer to £150
  22. DBM on Gloucester Rd, the Drum bit is opposite teh Texaco at the Somerville road junction, the guitar bit is 100 yards north of that on the right. 300 yards south of that, opposite The Prom music bar is a place that sells used basses, amps, cabs, effects, mics and stuff (and load of disco stuff). Not cut price but their stuff tends to be on the "beginners" side. Hand holding may be difficult to find in a shop so signing up for some lessons is the best way to go .. most tutors also know of gear for sale by their students upgrading so a call to a few may resolve things. The Folk House on Park Street has some courses, they used to do a blues workshop course where a bass player could go alongside 6 stringers, etc http://www.bristolfolkhouse.co.uk/index.html There's probably other adult education courses that may work for your friend. Also have a trawl round the Bristol Rocks Website http://www.bristolrock.co.uk/ Loads of stuff there. That should keep them busy for a bit.
  23.
No, he does mean Movin' On Up!
Nah can't be that one. No bass amp!
  24.
you can find a Peavey 300watt 1x15 combo on ebay for next to nothing nowadays. For no money, great value. Down side is you need 83 people to get in in your car. Keith
ha ha +1 they are very solid and Old Skool Get one with a 1x15 Black Widow speaker if you go this way. Looks like poo, sounds great. And no, you can't buy mine Not to be confused with teh Combo 115, the TKO or the TNT. All are 1x15 combos
