could be an on stage tone clash with the other instruments ... We've spoken about this before but if you and the guitar and the keys are all competing for the same tonal space it will mush up.
Ah so that's why the bass sound was like being punched in the face in a good way! My ashdown rig needs another cab (I need money first though...)! Does anyone know why they fell out with Eavis and were only just allowed back?
You'll be needing a Shuker JJB P bass too then That's a fabulous punch in the face bass...
Great find OG - this is going to be just perfect for tomorrow afternoon, between gigs Thanks bud! EDIT - that Bernadette track is quite simply incredlble, it's been on my Youtube Favourites list now for a while but it's great to hear it in high quality! SECOND EDIT - The instrumental of 'You Keep Me Hanging On' has just literally brought a tear to mine eye!
Humbling isn't it.... -
Gareth bought my 70's re-issue Sid style Japanese P bass An absolute peasure to deal with. Thanks Gareth.
Again - what is there to add to all of the above? Except to say that it's all true!!! I just took delivery of a Fender 70's RI Precision ("Sid" as he is affectionately known) and Simon was amazing to deal with in every way. Given the amount of waffle and indecision he had to deal with from me, if we were talking on the phone I wouldn't blame him for making a cup of tea and watching the footie while I rambled on (as is my want). So, needless to say Si is a top bloke and buy with absolute confidence.
Ha ha I like a bit of the blarney Gareth .. Got plenty myself. Glad Sid's working for you. Just watch out for the spit
That is officially an awesome pic. \m/><\m/
+1 brilliant picture.. She should offer her services to bands on here. -
Yeah, sorry sir, i should know my place (bows, stays low and walks backwards out of the throne room).
That's better. Now fetch me my Friday poodle.
I'm still struggling with backing vocals. Although i do them as I'm the weakest singer i don't get a monitor so most of my singing is probably never heard. maybe thats a good thing. One thing i do find is its hard to do both for more than a bar or so at the same time so big respect to anyone who can.
I found it hard at first but with practice a kind of bi-polar separation happens and one bit of your brain keeps the bass going and another bit handles the singing. It's easier if you learn bass and BV's for a new tune right from the start rather than trying to add BV's to a tune you already play bass on. I've also re-written my bass part to make it easier on some things. There's no way I could do a Lynott and play complex bass parts and sing melodies at the same time. A monitor would help you though..
Nice one, sounds liek a great night for you and the audience. Well done. So you'll be demanding your own dressing room now, and no blue M&M's lol. LSD soon turns you in to a twat IME ;-)
Sorry Can't talk to you as you are just a bass player

Well I'm no longer a play bass and sing lead at the same time virgin New guitarist and me girded our loins and bravely decided to give it ago at the blues jam. I was a tad nervous to say the least. Lots of Gig Bottom yesterday. I've always thought I'd never remember the words. That was my biggest fear rather than playing and singing at the same time.. We did a Texas blues shuffle version of Kiss (Prince/Thomas the Jones) and an orginal of mine that I've gigged before but not sung. It's a most friendly jam session and I've been down and played bass a number of times so I know most of the players there, Fabio my guitar player mate didn't though. He's only been once and chose a night where some really good guitarist turned up Poor man was really nervous about all the "plugging into someone else's amp" stuff. However the other players we borrowed were great. I warned them about the arrangement bits and off we went. Turns out I can sing lead Ok and in tune (and remember words!) but with little finesse or style. No monitors so that didn't help much and the weedy valv bass combo was virtually inaudible at the mic. Fabio ripped out a great pair of solos though. Really good stuff so that's reassuring as we've only played at kitchen volumes thus far... And ... the crowed rocked and moved in time and sang along to Kiss and smiled benevolently at my own one and no one dragged us off or looked away embarrassed as they stifled a laugh ... So a win overall. Oh and I've caught LSD* for sure now... even thinking of getting one of the several other bass players there to play for us next time so I can really do that Lead Singer bit and play some harp .. Got asked to join a band too Not really got time but that was nice... * Lead Singers' Disease
Taken this week at a band photo shoot - I'm the short one on the far right…
I like the way the line on the wall follows your band's average height median I'd probably not book you for a wedding though -
Well I distracted myself and my equally nervous guitar playing friend with banter and small talk whilst the house band warmed up with a slow blues or too and then we went for it. It was fine, we borrowed one of the more experienced guitarists and the House drummer (bad leg, acerbic wit, fake US accent) ... and we stormed it Our Texas shuffle stomp version of Kiss had everyone seat dancing and singing along and my original was very well received too.. All in all well pleased and boy do I want to sing lead again, I'm even tempted to draft in a bass player next time the power, the power! Nurse! OG's caught LSD!!
good luck mate... maybe avoid light tan coloured trousers in your ensemble
I'm celebrating Paul H's success in his droid carer by wearing one of his fine BassBot teeshirts (and brown trousers )
Wear sunglasses, that way you can close your eyes while singing and not look like too much of a plum.
ha ha nah. I have to make eye contact with the other players, whomever they may be, to give them clues about how the arrangement may go, and read the word clues from my floor mounted crib sheets (cant afford a lyric monitor like Springsteen has) Anyway I'm happy looking audience member directly in the eye

Go on Spotify and search for the bands you list there. Top right there's suggestions for bands you may like. For Jamiroquai for example there's Stevie, Daft Punk, Lenny Kravitz, General Sir Mike Jackson, Jamie Callum (!), Jack Johnson, Basement Jaxx....

Pitfalls of setting the band up as a business??
OldGit replied to Jamesemt's topic in General Discussion
Just a thought on advertising, aren't agents worth using? Most people who book function bands just go to an agent and choose want they want, rather than trawl through the internet hoping to find something.
Now that's a different market. Selling your band to agents you'll need a offline marketing such as professionally produced paper brochures and DVD's with professional photography, video and sound samples. What they don't want you to have a is an easily found website with direct contact info. otherwise what does the punter get for the agents 10 or 15% uplift? So what you do is make a no contact information professional website specifically for agents to pass on to their clients. Here's an example: E2Music Obviously you can't use the same band name or the punter will google you, suss out that it's cheaper to book direct and cut out the agent and that will really annoy them... or at least that's the risk. So have two websites, two band names..... -
Standing in the Shadows sound track on Spotify
OldGit replied to OldGit's topic in General Discussion
The Jamerson Bernadette track is brilliant: The bass alone sounds horrible, all mud and farty distortion, but as the track cuts in over it you realise that the sound is perfect in context. I also realised that I have much to learn of eq and such matters ...
