I'm off to NZ.

Have fun, Steve. Things always work out for the best.
  3.
Sad story as I really like the sound of a P-Bass, but as stringrayfan mentioned it's hard to get it through a mix properly. Definately a good warning for a youngster like me, though I've always used ear-protection (Alpine in-ear plugs); not the best out there but sure does the job nicely. I really hope you can get some satisfactory sounds out of your jazzy!
I find P basses through Ashdown / Trace Elliott don't work for me. P basses are fine with my tatty old Peavey and my posh Markbass/Bergantino but for some reason TE/Ash just doesn't do it.
  4.
Most London gig venues cram on 4-6 bands per night and don't pay them anything unless they bring with them over a certain number of people, eg after 20 people you get paid £1 per person turning up to see your band (and they ask everyone on the door who they're here to see). In fact, playing The Comedy, we had to PAY £5 each for the privilege of being able to use the backline amps! Makes me want to join a covers band so at least my costs get covered! Maybe that's why they're called cover bands...
ha ha yeah well most orginals bands are rubbish so that's why they get away with this malarchy.
  5.
Yep, loads of methods eg if you have an internal boom mic or piezzo you can blank over the sound hole. If this is not suitable then you can use electronic means but these are commonly attached to the sound desk eg Graphic Equaliser. I have used these (see below) specifically for acoustic, drum overheads and monitors ie gear that normally contributes to feedback. It can be set up to hunt automatically and will reset itself. It has ultra narrow notch so you won't hear the filters working and is pretty idiot proof. It can be set up at the acoustic insert on your desk channel, set up and left alone. http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product.asp?id=3991 I have a signiifcant amount of pa gear to clear and sold two already to a BCr. I can sell you my last one for £50 +pp. Normally £130. Iain (ps:check my feedback threads - all gear is very, very good)
Iain is, indeed, a top bloke. Other ideas: My acoustic bass (Crafter BA400) had a phase switch button that used to cancel feedback, or to be precise it moved it from one note to another. It nearly always worked. I guess you could switch pre-amps to one that has that feature. Otherwise, how about the Behringer Shark? http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~B...ark~ID~1639.asp Iain is a top bloke, by the way
  6.
I made and fitted one to a guitar .. I'm responsible for the knobs too
that's a wheely nice job I wonder if scratchplates could be fitted with magnetic points like cavity covers are these days or if they'd look odd without screws ...
  7.
Having had a think about it I'd also consider a trade/PX for an EUB. It'll need to be a long'un (i.e. 3/4). Chris
Swap for my stagg? I could get a nice fake WAV logo for it and add some mojo if it helps
  8. Would have been handy to start from where you actually are rather than where you were apearing to be...
  9.
The prototype new site: http://barefacedbass.bassmandesigns.com/ (that sired this thread!) Alex
Ahhhhhhhhh
  10.
Just a quickie.
Nic cab pic shop job ...
  11.
I am one of these he's building for - very excited! Also explains why I am having to sell so much other gear!
Ooooooh all round to Mister Clark's house in, say, a year?
  12. From the FAQ "Question: Why does your website look so cheap? Answer: Because we're spending our money on speakers instead! Also we want to have a lot of content on this site and so it needs to be easy to change or expand."
  13.
A "build process" section showing a cab from bits of wood to finished product.
GUS guitars has a really good one - sequence of images with good titles and notes - and in a shed http://gusguitars.co.uk/tour.php Edited to remove the typo
  14.
Harsh, but so very true. S.P.
Sorry I can help though
  15. Chatting to Jon this week about these and he says demand is very high. He's even started building a few without an order "on spec", as it were. So far each of these has sold before being completed.
  16.
Too true, lol. Actually I really enjoy playing in pubs. We tipped up last night about 7:15 and all set up by 8:00. First beer on the house from the management & on stage by 9:00. First set about 45 mins, 15 min break & back for about an hour. Then packed up & out the door before 12:00. Last wedding I played payed out 4 times as much but we had to be there by 12 lunchtime and couldn't even start packing until gone midnight.
A pub gig, £250 AND a free beer? That's outstanding.
  17.
Played a gig last night. Crowd numbered about seven Four were the other band. S.P.
Sounds like you need to work on your entertainment and marketing factors ...
  18.
Always happy to consider some kind of web design=gear trade! Paul. But here are a few instant thoughts... Get some nice CSS styling on the navigation, remembering to use a sprite if you want to use background images. Personally I would just echo the logo with nice use of borders. Centre the design. 900px wide is fine but make it a centred div and you're good to go. Centre section is fine with white background but some kind of speaker cloth style background image might look cool for the remaining visible screen. Another quick tip is to go for php and use an include statement to load up the navigation. Then as the site grows you can add buttons to the nav in one file and have it appear on every page.
But please, please please don't put text over an image as in Myspce. It's a disaster for legibility......
  19. Jam session... So loud my ears are still ringing .. TE bass stack so I couldn't hear a note but was terribly loud 10 feet away fine if you know the tune but not for jam sessions .. I got drafted in for Watch Tower, Hey joe and Wish you were here. No problem except everyone was so loud I couldn't hear anyone and the good drummer got down as I got up The drummer on my stint obviously couldn't hear anything either as the snare on Hey Joe was on "1 and" .. and I don't think he was being funky ... Young guitarist who got up to play Watch Tower had tuned his guitar to itself and not the world so I had to swiftly tune up a hemisemi tone whilst playing .. Now normally I like jam sessions but this was just not a happy gig all round amd ended with the the organiser and his usual house band bass player having a nose to nose yelling row. "You threw FOOD at me!!!" it went .. then she packed and stormed out to choruses of "he threw FOOD at her" Last people up were a three piece group who ripped through SRV's version of Superstition with some stonking bass playing. I plugged my ears and stayed for that The evening was topped off when I saw a car career into one waiting at lights on the way home. Looked pretty serious.. nasty.
  20.
I'll be quite honest, I had never in all these years been on a site where for one second I didn't get side tracked slightly. Even the best ones. Which isn't saying anything except why I found it so odd that the Barefaced site held my attention on their cabs so well. Haven't read that book but I can imagine what it says - and have had discussions on those lines so many times with clients who just don't get it. AAAARRRGGHHHHH!!!!
I lend a copy to my clients to save me trying to convince them
  21. Ha ha there speaks a man used to playing functions.... £250 is great money for a pub band ....

  23.
There's a lot to be said about a site that just gives you exactly what you need without any other thoughts popping into your brain.
All the best ones do .. there's a great short book on the subject that sums it up nicely "Don't make me think" by Steve Krug. (get the second edition).
  24. Well I PM's Alex a ton of stuff but here's a few more: Look at how Ashdown do their stuff. they are really good at this and that's why they get reviwed a lot - they have a fabulous press area. http://www.ashdownmusic.com/bass/index.asp their press area has great pictures. http://www.ashdownmusic.com/press/releases...m2009/index.asp IMHO there's some reason for Alex not having very glossy marketing however taking better pictures is not hard and will pay dividends ..
