1. I'm curious why you went for a P pup there rather than a J .. Does it sound very different?

 4.
'Tis the way things are heading, these shops can't really compete with online retailers.
They can compete with the online people but many stores seem unable to grasp the concept that good customer service will win over price differential most of the time, especially on large, expensive purchases. Plus a few bricks and mortar shops I know will match Internet prices. They get my business because that is a big part of customer service - going the extra mile.
 5. Just found theis informative A-Z of Dub on the Rockers Revolt website http://www.rockersrevolt.com/2008/05/29/the-a-z-of-dub/ I learned a lot
 6.
Greetings! I own two Warwick Mastermans (Mastermen?) I find the necks to be quite comfortable. They're both 34" scale; I know Rics are 33 1/2. Nonetheless here are Warwick's dimensions, taken from their site: Also, for what its worth, I'm current building a bass with these neck dimensions, although mine will be a 35" (maybe 36"?) scale. It'll be a variation of a Warwick Buzzard/Alembic Dragon Wing (pic attached)
Good luck with the build. There's a place for build threads on here. You could start one and document your progress. They are always interesting, especially if you take loads of photos.. There's a number of builders here too so if you have problems they can help ..
 7.

Well he is new .. Is that my earstwhile Yamaha in your avatar there?
 8.
Rics vary from bass to bass, never mind year to year. I've recently played 3 '73s and they were all totally different, from pencil-thin to baseball-bat big. I've owned 9 and they have all felt different. Check out the Ric Resource Forum; they've done a thread about Ric neck dimensions. I think what was found was that the measurements didn't seem to vary that much but that doesn't tell the story of how different they all feel.
Hiyah, Thanks .. Oh well ... I was after some idea of what the wide flat ones measure. I used to have a '72 or '73 and that was really thin (dimention C) and always felt great. Hence my question. Thanks all round. OG
 9.
Tuning fork? Somehow I can't see it :-) Jennifer
+1 Recording studio without a piano?
 10.
I saw California and (wrongly) assumed that he was talking about the California situated slightly North of Meh-he-co. I suppose I should have consulted with my old mate Google!
Neat trick though .. it says California in the advert therefore the bass must be worth more than one that just says Mexico .. Best disinfect it though, just in case ..
 11. Er thanks ....
 12.
Sick burn!
? Curry last night and now you are vomiting?
 13. Yeah they used to do that... If the final thing sounded too slow they speeded the whole thing up. No Autotune or s/w that kept the pitch then .. Just retune your bass to the record...
 14.
We've now got our hands on them and they're actually much better than we expected! The tone is somewhere between a Jazz (bridge pup) and a MusicMan, very nicely put together and the tone control has a big effect on the sound. The necks are fast and the pickup is very responsive. All in all, it's a very playable bass.
Cool. How about letting one of the guys here review one? Is it twice as good as a Squier VM Jazz?Did it come in perfectly setup? Just wondered ...
 15.
The Flea article was an advert for the Fleabass. "It doesn't need to be really expensive" Flea. Price £499.00 for the 34inch, £449.00 for the 30inch. So £500.00 for a made in China bass . No review though.
Long Fleabass discussion thread here Meawhile... That has to be a 'shop job on Norm on page 33.. Where have his trademark eye bags gone? Seeing him on Friday. I may get an autograph "for my lad"
 16. Just read about this in BGM: Oneida James: Groove Mastery £12 from Amazon .. Here May be a good investment?
 17. Anyone know where I can find the dimensions of a Ric 4001 neck? Preferably a 70's one if they vary. I'm interested in - the width at the nut and 12 fret, - the neck depth/thickness at the 3rd, 5th and 12th frets: that's the dimensions labeled C and D in this handy diagram from Ibanez. - Fingerboard radius - bridge string spacing I'd prefer it in mm but I appreciate that Americans don't tend to speak metric Thanks, OG
 18. So the new FleaBass (RRP £500) has no chance in their alleged "hard up beginners" target market? Thought not.
 19.
still a bit long, too many syllables.
BigDaddy? I know about the waiting thing with one-off stuff. My bass was all but finished but for the pickup - the first 5 string P PUP Jon's people had done. It took a few goes to resolve the problems (not sure what they were) so an extra 3 months or so just for that.
 20.
Get on the Northern Line to Camden and get yourself to the Gallery. Best bass shop around.
Argh! How did I forget the Gallery!? Getting old http://www.thebassgallery.com/
 21.
I am not a pro by any means, but I totally love my 5 string Squier P I got for £100 second hand, especially after I added £90 of Wizards and some Labella flats. I have bought a second one (same price) which I intend to try and carve a proper 5 string P split coil into (the originals and Wizards are J pups) but I haven't got the spare cash at the moment to find the right one. Oh, and I bought my JV Jazz from our very own Bass Doc for £150, about 8 years after Twigman spent the same on his P! Not sure what the inflation boffins will make of that.
£150 in 1992 is about £240 in 2009. So I'd say you are still well in credit with the selling price of JVs these days ..
 22.
I used this one... http://safalra.com/other/historical-uk-inf...ice-conversion/
Ah! I was looking for that one but failed to find it Bookmarked now
 23.
It was budget at the time though. if you wanted cheaper you'd have to buy a Hondo or a crappy Kay (I had a crappy Kay at the time and it was just a lump of very heavy cheap wood - hardly a bass at all).
Well that is another point - the massive increase in quality of budget instruments. However a lot of the Hondo type things were OK... My local jam has a Marlin as the jam bass. It's old, rusty and has no knobs but ... in the right hands (Burke Shelly for example), it sounds superb. Sub £200 currently? SX from Rondo Music with a better bridge, good strings and setup will easily play and sound as good as a bass that costs much more than £200. My current jamming bass is a Noname "Fecker Pretender" (AKA SX/Jim Deacon) P bass with a load of good mods including a Wizzard Thumper and Wilkinson bridge. It's great. The Yam BB414 mentioned earlier was high quality and nice but not right for me. That was just under £200 new. I've not played a Vintage (make) but they have to be worth trying. However, there's a lot more to it than simply how they play and sound so something with the right image and name on the headstock will always score brownie points.
 24.
My Squier JV series precision cost me £149 back in 1984...it still does a blinding job!
That's about £350 in today's money though... http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/historic-inflation-calculator The early 80s Squiers were only "budget" basses in relation to the Fenders they were cloning. Edit: Dlloyd got there before me ..
 25. Welcome to the forum, Lee. As you may expect, we've been around this a few times Do a search 'Tis all the fault of the Internet  Now, using the aformentioned devil's wires, may I recommend you have a look at The Bass Merchant and BassDirect, both friends of the forum - and neither in London, and Masons. I am sure others will chip in with more good bass shops..
