1.
Sblueplanet - I don't know the numbers for left hand production of the L series basses but they don't seem to come up for sale very often. Due to the unique construction however, you could use a right hand bass and just make or have made a replacement top plate ie the front of the bass which carries the pickups and control knobs. That way you could have the proper left- hand arrangement for the controls but still be able to swap back to the original plate for re-sale purposes. I've seen GL guitars with nice wood top plates fitted so you could vary the appearance as you liked. Just an idea which would open up the market for you. Cheers Ed
Cheers Ed. I have just come across a guy in Belgium selling a lefty XL2 but his asking price is ridiculous. I would still have to have a clear out to release funds whatever arose but a Steinberger would be in my dream downscaling setup.
2. I was writing songs before I could play an instrument. Wanted be a singer but kept coming into contact with people who were naturally gifted vocally so stuck with my chosen instrument bass as my main creative outlet withing music but always wrote songs to be performed and recorded within whichever band I played. I found early on that people are not very patient or have a lot of imagination when a new idea is put across on the bass alone so I learned pretty quickly to also play guitar, mainly strumming and picking. This greatly improved being able to get across any new song ideas. My vocal talent is ok so I often sing and play bass in projects etc. never found it difficult. I also do a lot of home recording where I will write, arrange, record and play all the instruments on a composition although with drums its samples and loops or drum machine.
3. I bought a white with tort pickguard '62 RI MIJ jazz bass last year. It's a great bass and very light and bright-sounding But has been slightly relic'd and poorly done in my opinion so I was thinking what the best option for a make-over could be. I've been looking at jazzes online for ideas and I like the idea of putting on a control plate with two concentric knobs. I think it looks great on the vintage basses. Where would I buy such a control plate replacement? Also, are there any good guitar guys out there who could improve on the relic job done to my bass or even give it an aged refin in another colour? I'd be very tempted to have it in sonic blue with the previous colour showing through here and there. Also, If anyone has attempted something similar I would love to read your comments and see the results. Cheers.
4. Lovely job. Here's my 57 RI CIJ lefty for comparison. I added the gold anodised pickguard, chrome covers and it has a Kent Armstrong pickup.
5. I love it!
6.
Rotosound stainless from ebay, only 11 quid a pop, so even if they dont last, its still reasonable
Too true. Shocked at how much it is for a set of TI flats.
7. I did own an early 80's right-handed L2 fretless for about 12yrs which I played upside down being a lefty and with changing influences a lot of that time it was kept under the bed. Must admit though if anyone knows of a lefty L2 or XL2 for sale at present please point me in its direction.
8.
Oh my good gawd Terence, yes it certainly was....
I thought so too and I did contact the guy about a week ago as it was for sale not too far from me in Scotland but it was already sold.
9. Have you tried trolling through the 'Wanted' section on leftybass.com? Might be a buyer in there as its dedicated to lefties.
10. Watched the show and the Otis doc beforehand. Duck Dunn and Steve Cropper on good form and looking way cool in their sharp suits but nothing could beat the power and presence of Otis Redding himself, what a tragedy he died so young.
11. Thanks @bbrich. That's some sensible advice.
12. Im a lefty who plays with the strings upside down. I never really thought about it until it was too late, haha! My older brothers were in a band and I used to hang around rehearsals and have a try on all the instruments when they took a break. Liked the bass as it was strung with smooth flatwound strings and I could manage Walking On The Moon by The Police which was just out. Didnt get my own bass until 1982 and never owned an actual left-handed bass until 1993.
13. XL2 with hard case was for sale recently on Gumtree for a grand. Im guessing that was a good price?
14. If sale falls through fancy 2nd dibs.
15.
It was on sale for over 3 hours, there must be a recession on.
Haha! Classic.
16. I see. Never really thought that through. I think it would be Fender steel flats going on. The guy who owns the acousto-electric would like action a lot lower as he's a keyboard player and just dabbles in bass. Im thinking of changing the strings to flats first before tackling any bridge issues.
17. What gauge would help lower the action? A light 45-100 or medium 55-105 gauge?
18.
There`s a Midget going on here at pres, put up today - unless someones bought it already that is.
That Midget flew out of here! Must say something about their quality.
19. The Eden ex112 was the cab that made me start this thread. At around £200 it got me thinking how much for a quality small cab these days.
20. I reckon Barefaced cabs are at the pricey end of the small cab market if they are hand-built. Is there an official website? The Eden EX-112 looks compact but Im not reading anyone recommending it. I remember someone having a Hartke 4x10 that I liked the sound of but I def want to get a single 12". I have an Ampeg 2x10 but miss the bottom I can get from my old but tonne-weight Acoustic combo with 15" ported cab. I think the 12" should be an adequate and portable substitute. In terms of volume produced, I had no idea about displacement etc. Will leave that to the experts but all advice is good advice. As said before, cost will decide the eventual choice but hopefully from this discussion and fellow opinions it will be an informed one.
21. In my current quest to downsize to a portable rig that Im also able to lift and carry I have decided on a micro amp such as GK, Eden etc. However, my knowledge of small cabs is limited and I would be interested to read what 1x12 cabs other basschatters have chosen and why? Budget will come into the mix of course but at the moment Im interested in 1x12 users' opinions.
22. Sorry about that. Let's get back to bass. Since flatwound strings seem to offer the longest tone consistency are there any brands in this area that sit way above the rest? Also, which would be best flatwound replacements on an electro-acoustic bass?
23. Lady Macbeth from Macbeth play by Shakespeare:-) Walks around naked washing her hands once the murder starts. Much better than Inspector Poirot or Morse.
24. Maybe Lady Macbeth was a conscientious bass player. All that hand-washing.
25. Why oh why did I ever part with my fretless L2?!!!!!! Nice bass; nice case.
