  1. ... where I would be quite the opposite, giving no house room to hickory sticks, to privilege Japanese White Oak, nylon-tipped, for their long-lasting clarity and robustness. No carbon fibre, of course, nor aluminium (<<shudders>>...). Kudos for not over-playing during the solo.
  2. It depends ...
  3. This old chestnut keeps coming up. How could any individual, private person claim back any VAT paid on new goods when these goods are later sold, to an individual, as exported 'second-hand'..? Assuming neither of the persons are registered for VAT (being private persons...), how could this work..? Would the whole of the paid VAT be claimed..? A 'pro-rata' proportion of the selling price..? How about gifts..? Could one claim back that VAT..? I seem to understand (although I'm confused about it...) that NZ manage to offer this to its citizens; there's nothing like it in the Old World, as far as I am aware.
  4. Ditto my Superlux HD669, worn most days, often for several hours at a time. They'll probably see me out.
  5. If it's only a few cms too long, could packing diagonally do the trick..? It shortens the length, at the expense of increased breadth, but can be an option, ofttimes...
  6. Here is my contribution to the May 2021 Basschat Composition Challenge, inspired by a picture chosen by the previous winner: Upside Downer. Suspense, anguish, doubt, bordering on terror, à la Hitchcock, with these inexpressive 'birds' watching every approaching step. What gauntlet do we have to run..? What are they waiting for..? What do they want with us..? The heart beats apace as the tension mounts. WHAT DO THEY WANT..? A rather piece-meal approach, this month, with some MIDI tracks triggering various elements from Spitfire LABS instruments (they really are excellent, and free, to boot..!); with a healthy dose of various samples I have. Quite (or even, very...) 'cheesy' on their own, they meld into a curiously hypnotic, and somewhat spooky, atmosphere when arranged and mixed with Reaper. No other Fx nor mastering; t'would serve no purpose here. Recommended to be listened to on decent headphones, in a darkened room, with eyes fixed on the picture. Thanks for listening, if you already have; if you're about to, enjoy.
  7. It's especially nocive if breathed in. Use the stuff in a well-ventilated environment; preferably outdoors, and try very, very hard not to breath in the fumes.

  9. Good afternoon, Sammy, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share.
  10. The same reason why bassists buy Rickenbackers: they've seen some 'star' performer do it.
  11. He's still up there; he never left ...
  12. ... and I call 'Shallow'..! It's not the hair that counts ... ...
  13. Have you seen the Status Quo backline..? Not much room left for anyone with that in the corner by the toilets..!
  14. Their own 'greats', fine. Everyone has theirs; I have mine. It's futile, though, to suggest that there's any that deserve 'worship' from a whole bass player community, no..?
  15. Contact the sound team beforehand (they need your stage set-up, anyway...), and explain yourself. I'm pretty sure they'll be able to slot a mic change into the band change-over with no issues (assuming just a minimum of competence...). Singers will often enough use their own personal mic; it was quite a normal 'thing' at our yearly festival; no big deal. The other option, to be sure..? Mime.
  16. Well I was defied ("if you can bear it have a look at the attached video..."), which I accepted, and thought it reasonable to lance my own. Never mind; I'm still at 37' in and counting (not for the first time, naturally...). It just illustrates that stuff like 'endurance', or 'worship' are not applicable; one likes it or not. Tastes evolve, too. One becomes (sometimes...) a bit more 'tuned in' to different genres. 'Whatever floats your boat', as they say, but don't try to put SQ up there with the 'greats'. They do what they do, that's all. Peace.
  17. Rhythm..? Check. Beat..? Check. Endurance..? Check. Musicianship..? Oh sorry; was that a criteria..?
  18. Compare and contrast ...
  19. A couple a decades ago now, I listened to part of a radio programme celebrating the xxx years of their career. A few anecdotes, some chat with the presenter, and, as a 'parting gift', they were to receive a special treat: the playing of their first hit. 'Pictures Of Matchstick Men'. One could hear, even on the radio, the cringing of the group as they had to endue the full three minutes thirty or whatever. After having lauded their guitar work, their tight signature rhythm section, their musicality... It was a real embarrassment. Disclaimer: I've never been, myself, a fan of their stuff, having lived not far from the 'Rossi' roots of Hounslow, and having had the dubious pleasure of playing some of their stuff (on drums...) for a college concert. It's basic, it's primitive, it works, in the genre targeted, but I wouldn't give it house room, myself. There is, in my world, much better stuff to listen to. As for 'worship': that's meant jokingly, surely..? Just my tuppence-worth.
  20. OK, but go easy on the yodelling.
  21. ... and..? ...
  22. A light repertoire, then..? ...
