1. Chris. I've been in denial that I need to buy a bow for proper practice so knock it off the ply DB cost and I'll take it! how does that work for you?
2.
Thats a beaut, Jas. Fantastic looking bass and I bet after MB's work it plays stunningly well. Maybe try one of Ben Bastin's wooden endpins? I have one (a few other BCers too) and I think it does improve the tone vs a metal endpin, plus it means the bass is always at the right height
I've been wanting to do that but am still trying to iron out some aspects of my technique and have been lengthening the end pin more. Once I get settled maybe I'll go for it
3. Having been in my possession for a couple of months, and now nicely setup by Martyn Bailey...here's my carved Shen SB200 maple (not willow). Strung with Evah Weichs which seem a good all round string so far.
4. You can loosen the strings and adjust it straight, but bear in mind that as you ension them back up again, they may well attempt to pull the bridge again. On an acoustic double bass the feet are also supposed to align with the "nicks" in the F holes...I'm not exactly sure what is happening there with your EUB but it looks wrong unless the bottom of the bridge feet are supposed to line up with the mark?
5. I think you should find something good within this range: http://www.innovationstrings.com/inn_products.htm
6. You are not alone... Welcome
7. I can highly recommend Martyn Bailey: http://www.mjbl.co.uk/
8. Sorry Some vices are almost a virtue. Enjoy!
9. I visited Chris recently to try this bass (thanks Chris!) and I can certainly vouch for it. It has a lovely punchy tone and is utterly playable, even to someone as out of practice as I am with the DB. The quality of the construction is excellent and although its surprisingly light it manages to combine this with feeling seriously robust at the same time. I actually found it quite inspiring to play, with a nice clarity and presence which surprised me. It wouldn't be for sale as I was set on buying it but unfortunately it would mean selling my Rob Allen and I can't bring myself to do it I still want it though, so someone please save me from myself and buy it... And now, for your entertainment, here's Kylie and Dani rolling around on the floor together
10. Something like this...
11. Something to bear in mind is that short scales do have a certain quality to the sound, this is particularly evident above the 12th fret on the E string. Not a nice sound either to my ear, sort of like a wolf tone warbling thing. The design of any 34" scale bass can have quite an effect on the problem you are having - worst example is the Lakland Decade where the bridge is mounted a good few inches from the end of the body, combined with a short upper horn makes it a serious stretch for the 1st few frets. The total opposite is my rob allen which is 34" scale but feels smaller than most 30" scale basses due to the position of the bridge and body shape e.g. So you might just find that a better designed 34" bass will work for you?
12.
And there was I well into my subtle persuasion technique on the Mrs . Sounds like a good decision on your part given the history of this thread. However, now I really want one and Bass Direct only have 1 and that's a 5 stringer (the nut width is a bit much for me), maybe I should put my '63 P up for sale and wait until they get some 4s in stock and then fill my boots.
Sorry matey, you were already out of luck there anyway! I had a buyer turning up tomorrow who has very graciously accepted my total change of heart. Used ones do come up on talkbass now and then which could save you a lot on a new one if you wanted to go that route. Of course Rob is always building lovely new ones as well
13. And now withdrawn as I've had a total change of heart to stick with my cheaper DB for now meaning I don't have to part with this (yet)
14.
As if this is back to haunt me! I can't play fretless, I can't play fretless......
Would it help to mention that its one of the easiest fretless basses I've ever played? Practically plays itself it does Guv'
15. Having sold this, then embarrassingly needed to buy it back fast...I'm now in the position where it could be sold to fund a proper DB upgrade. It was always my intention to be back on DB properly and this has been such a good compromise in that area that I've nearly lost my way and not bothered with the DB at all! I kept finding myself thinking "if they could have made a bass like this Rob Allen 200 years ago, would they have bothered with the double bass?" So I'm putting it out there again to see if there is any interest. Scary thought as I love this little thing J
16.
I like the dog basket!
Not my dog, but he loves sleeping in guitar cases of any type - or on my lap!
17. Slightly amazed this thread didn't already exist! Here's my new workhorse - all laminate, imported by Leslie Sheppard in the 60's (probably Czech?), pretty much 4/4 size with a fishman full circle and some velvet blues.
18. Wow, nice conclusion to your bass-adventure Fran - congratulations
19. Took delivery of a tick from Simon last week - nice and easy transaction, thanks
20. Hmm, I'd love to take a look at this. Might be in contact soon
