Small valve amps. Caution; guitar related content
lowlandtrees replied to leftybassman392's topic in General Discussion
Just sold my 1973 champ for 300..I loved that baby...tiny and weighs less than zero...floats by itself into your pocket..lovely clean tone and great overdriven. Don’t hardly play guitar anymore and needed a small bass cab -
I suspect my MM SUB needs a set up but would putting a capo on first or second fret throw out intonation? I play in a couple/3 of bands and one of them down-tunes a semi tone. We play one night then the following night the other band then two days later the other band etc...so being a lazy bugger I just use a capo...not to gig ...just practice...but I have discovered that with the capo on, intonation is affected....or could I possibly need a set up?

There is no animosity between me and our guitarist whatsoever. Really just wondering about the thumb/finger technique. Tried to upload our first rehearsal. I think it sounds OK...thumb thing
-
Yes his technique is a combo of both..very relaxed as well
-
I think that I am too far down to re program comfortably anyway...was just wondering if other people play like this.
-
I have been playing for 12 ish years. I have tried two finger plucking but always come back to thumb and fore finger and am comfortable playing like this and uncomfortable plucking with two finger. I realise that you get a slightly fatter sound with fingers only but I like the percussive feel of thumb/forefinger. I do sometimes play with two fingers but struggle on the E string. Anyway I have joined another band and the guitarist (very accomplished) is ‘encouraging ‘ me to use two fingers. I know that most players use fingers but was wondering if anyone else plays (almost) exclusively with thumb/forefinger(other than slapping)? Should I see this as a problem and fix it?

Question to Phil Jones Briefcase Owners

Question to Phil Jones Briefcase Owners
lowlandtrees replied to lowlandtrees's topic in Amps and Cabs
Thanks for replying. What about routing it through a PA and using it as a monitor...would this be possible? -
Thinking of getting a PJB Briefcase. I need to be able to take a line out to PA as well as use it on its own as a monitor. I see that it does XLR to PA in the manual but you can’t use an extension cab without disconnecting speakers/drivers internally. Is this effective...is there loss of /improved sound quality. I also play double bass. My main reason for getting the Briefcase is for a mini tour that we are doing using public transport(trains and ferries)

I have posted this in the Wanted section but I’m not sure that anyone even goes there. Please delete if not allowed. Looking to buy a Greenboy Crazy 8. Live in Scotland so would need to pack and courier. Jimmy

That long wedge is a work of art. Must have taken a while to plane it so accurately. Would definitely consider this as an option. My main concern is that the neck has possibly shifted over the years.

Nice work

It’s an old orchestral bass (1901) and bigger than 3/4 ....I know little about materials used. String height at the end of the f/b is 12mm I was advised that lowering the bridge would lower the volume of the bass and possibly the quality of the tone...and a new bridge would cost around £200. Bit reluctant to alter the existing bridge but I realise that is the most obvious route initially.
-
Just window shopping at the moment. My DB has really high action and I know that there are a couple of directions that I can go...alter or change the bridge or a neck re-set. I know the answer to the first (concerned about changing the sound..although it would be the cheaper option)...anyone have an idea of how much a re-set costs ish. Don’t really want to ask my luthier at this stage for a couple of reasons.

I need a gig bag for my MMSub. Doing a mini tour using public transport so need it to be not too heavy but padded enough, shoulder straps and waterproof of course. Maybe even space for my Ys. Someone selling a Protection Racket bag nearby but it looks too heavy (in the pics). Any recommendations ?
-
Yes...I have been holding off hoping to get a used one but I think in general folk hold on to them. I am not in a hurry as I have a wizzy 12 and a Greenboy fearful but looking to go light..especially for the public transport tour

AER bass one is out of my budget at mo. I can get get a crazy 8 for £420 ...will probably do that...I have an EA doubler that I am happy with
-
Thanks... I did suspect this. I have been looking for a s/h crazy 8 for over a year...missed one a few months ago on BC...thinking about Phil Jones as well
-
Been offered an AER compact 60. I am looking for something like a crazy 8 or Acoustic Image coda firstly as a practice/rehearsal amp and secondly for a short tour where we are using public transport. The AER 60 is an acoustic guitar amp but wonder if it would take a ebass and a DB. Gonna try it out next week but wondering if I am wasting the sellers time?
