    Bumping this old thread: I found the issue. The board is much more badly worn than I first thought, to the point where it should be replaced or reshot. The bass will have to go, because neither of those options is cost-effective. Thanks to all for your help and interest.

Just think of all those black cats suddenly rendered homeless... Work-wise, people have a tendency to shoot the messenger. So far as having too many basses, I maintain that more than 50 is too many. Especially given my lack of space and cash.

    Definitely better, to my ear (though this isn't my genre). The drums are better for being louder. The middle eight is better but still sounds rather disjointed to me. I like the last third, a definite improvement, to my ear.

    Is this to do with the [media ] tag I keep seeing? It's invisible to Firefox, so it's hard to work out what the membership is on about a lot of the time... [Edit: It's visible above because I put an extra space in. And I know it exists because if you quote a post, you can see the tags.]

    I've never owned a factory build in that config, so I can't comment on the Fender. Which said, I have two basses with double P pups. I like the sound; the bridge pup gives more cut-through than a "standard" P pup on its own seems to.

    I wouldn't buy it. But I couldn't anyway. I'm well used to people with pots of money spending it on stuff I dislike and/or find reprehensible.

    Look for long grooves in the fingerboard where the strings have worn the wood away. Some marking from strings might be okay, but if there are actual grooves I wouldn't buy it. In your position I would consider a new Harley Benton. They are good quality for their price, and you should be able to get an idea of what a fretless should be like without spending a lot of money on it.
