1. Newish strings, EQ out any excessive brightness, IMO. You can take brightness away but it's hard to add it back in, and I'm sure someone in the know will correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't (aren't?) there a myriad of lovely harmonic overtones lower in the frequency range that provide a richer tone but arent necessarily associated with "brightness" that get lost when strings are gunked up? Obviously all depends what sound you want though at the end of the day...
2. Thanks! That one is a bit Three Trapped Tigers influenced. That bit will be a chorus, when I get around to doing vocals. It probably wont actually be about moths, but any title is better than none, and my house is full of the buggers at the moment...
3. Great vid, great, entertaining stage presence from all of you and great playing
4. Productive weekend for a change. Wrote/recorded something folky: https://soundcloud.com/wil-miles/short-dinosaur-ballad And something electronic(ish). Still writing vocals for this one: https://soundcloud.com/wil-miles/launchthespacemoths
5.
Marquee Moon ...Television 12" single .....and I have the album.
Winner.
6. Lovely. Just about the coolest thing to come out of the 80s.
7. Hmm. I use Chrome and adblock and don't have any problems on my work or home PCs. Tried clearing your cache?
8.
Nope - It's a 'basschat-only' problem. And someone else mentioned it, too... think it was Dave Vader.
Do you use any add ons with Chrome?
9. More reasons to love Jazzmasters: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhDI0HN9HH0
10. Jazzmasters are the sex. I had a Jag once and a mustang bridge was an easy replacement which much improved matters in the "strings popping out at random" department.
11.
There should be no distinction at all, we are all bassists, musicians. I don't think I have come across anyone referring to 'the black bassist, Marcus Miller', so why the f*** do some of us feel the need to mention gender? Unless it's to make puerile or lazy comparisons, or to point out that 'she plays really well for a burd' or whatever.
This.

G+L basses

My brother plays a thinline ASAT in my band. It sounds more like a fat Jazz to me than a 'ray. Nice bass. If I were going to go for one I'd probably plump for a tribute, though, seems to me you get more for your money that way.
13. I think the overall quality of construction is more important for sustain etc than the joint type.
14. I really liked the sound of flats on a P in isolation but IME it got lost when it had to compete with two distortion coated guitars. In bands with more space for the bass to sit in I reckon they sound lovely.

ArcTangent Festival

Ooh, I'll have to check ANTA out too. I listened to one of their records once and it reminded me of Castlevania IV, which can only be a good thing.

ArcTangent Festival

Ooh, I'm going to this. I'll try and check you guys out, providing I'm a) lucid and b ) you dont clash with three trapped tigers
17. But Nige, you gig in well kitted out venues. I can count the number of times I've had decent monitors at a gig in the South West on one hand.
18. I tell you what's a really good combo - ham and pineapple with anchovies, sweet chilli sauce and an egg on a pizza. Seriously.
19. Headless Status and high wasteband Warwick Thumb and carpel tunnel Rickenbacker and a deep sense of regret
20.
Her looks didn't come under my notice. She's not my type. The post was about her tone. I liked her tone. I like plays on words. That's all. CB
Sorry, I didnt really mean to single you out there, I do appreciate that it was a fairly light hearted title and that your OP was focused on the tone - it was really some of the subsequent postings that invoked my ire and I've seen some more extreme examples of thread titles in the same vein that I was thinking of. I could have been more clear though.
21. The music industry and scene can be quite a sexist place. There is no good reason for the number of guitar/bass players/drummers being skewed towards men, considering the wealth of wonderful female artists and instrumentalists out there who clearly prove that musical talent has nothing to do with gender, but I'd postulate that it may be because a lot of girls are put off picking up guitars/basses or joining bands due to the fact that it is percieved to be something that boys do. In addition to that though, just look at the title of this thread, and many others I've seen on BC - instant focus on the fact the player is a girl combined with a reference to her looks. Meant in good humour or not it's depressingly common for female musicians to be objectified before they've even played a note. It's not just a problem with the music scene, it's a problem with society, IMO.
22.
It's not hard to see why the number of active female members on Basschat can be counted on one hand...
Just what I was thinking...
23. Not really, no. Melody, harmony and rhythm is most important, to me anyway.
