1. All I care about is if it's a) good and b ) new to me, it could have been produced anytime. Can't say I've heard much "new" music that's really excited me in years.
2.
I discovered the wonders of Kevin Ayers and soft machine through the gorkys also (one of my favourite bands in my yoof as well- still are- named my son Euros!) big fan of the unfairground album from a few years back...
That's dedication! Lovely name, I've always thought That's it, I'm listening to Bwyd Time on my train home now.
3. I've had a few Fenders over the years, a 2006 MIM P bass, a 2002 MIJ Jaguar guitar, a '99 US Standard Jazz bass and my current CV 60s Strat. They've all needed some setting up/tweaking (replacement bridge saddles for the Jag and Strat due to silly vintage design flaws), but I've been very very happy with all of them except the MIM P. That one just sounded dead no matter what I did with it, both plugged in and unplugged. So, yeah, try before you buy.
4. The music industry as we know it has existed for about 50 years, right? A mere blink of an eye in human history. In the 1800s music writing/performance was funded by the aristocracy, in the early 20th century sheet music was the main industry, from the 50s to the late 90s multitrack recording to a professional standard required massive investments in studio time and distribution was also a potentially massive cost, and now you can have a home studio more flexible than many could dream of 20 years ago, record an album and distribute it yourself by self financing. Things change, and the record industry as we knew it is not something that will or even should necessarily last for ever...
5.
I bet that's you, that is.
I really have no idea what you mean! Better go anyway, I need to go and answer the metaphorical door, someone I know just turned up with Soft Machine's back catalogue and a few doobies.
6.
I'm going to buy an acoustic guitar tomorrow, it's only a cheap one. Obviously, i would love to buy a really well made one, but don't have the budget for that, so i won't have it, because i can't afford it. See the similarity?
Not really, no, because that person I know would be in exactly the same position if they wanted an acoustic guitar but couldn't afford it.
7. Someone I know drives at 80mph on the motorway sometimes and downloads music from torrent sites. Someone I know does buy music from smaller bands and currently active bands, not so much bands that havent existed for 30 years. Someone I know's justification is that they get where they're going a bit quicker (and drive to suit the conditions, naturally) and by downloading they have an excellent music collection that they otherwise wouldn't have been able to afford in the first place.
8. Never listened to Soft Machine or Kevin Ayres but I know he/they were an influence on Gorky's Zygotic Mynci (one of my favourite bands in my yoof). Might have to have a delve into their back catalogue...
9. I really struggle with Revolver. It's full of great songs but as an album leaves me rather cold. It feels a bit more sinister than their other records, to me at least, and I'm not sure I like that. Rubber Soul, on the other hand... just wonderful!
10.
Great stuff. I love where the bass kicks in. Liking the deep tone, nice lines and a good bit of excitement later on. You must be pleased with that mate
Thanks Nige. Kinda pleased with it, certainly happy with each section isolated, but also displeased that I havent got any inspiration to finish it/turn it into something that works as a song!
11. Probably this demo I still havent got around to turning into a "song". I could really probably do with taking each section and developing into it's own idea. Bass doesnt start until about 1.40. My favourite bit of bassing is around 3.40 - it's a bit Kate Bush-y in terms of the melody I reckon. Picked this up at the weekend. Gretsch 5135 Corvette. Loving the Bigsby, far prefer it to the trem on my strat (which I ended up blocking due to tuning stability issues). Seems very stable and it feels great to use, lovely and smooth/controllable. Bridge pickup is stonking, not sure about the neck, seems a bit muddy but I havent used it in anger at rehearsal yet so we'll see.
13. You have a very good point! More pics: Note the tactical sticky tape holding down the broken key on the Nord. The key works, but without the tape in place rather than returning flush with the other keys it springs up higher and gets in the way of your Billy Preston-esq keyboard solos. Also note one of the nut slots in the warmoth is cut slightly too low, hence a tactical piece of paper has been inserted to prevent buzzing. Also shown in close up are the holes for the Bigsby I never fitted, when it became apparent just how chambered the Strat is (very, hence it's lovely light weight). The holes don't affect the tone or make it go faster.
14. The bolt on is a different shape to the NT, could be something to do with it.
15. I have decided that as I barely use my Nord, I may as well flog it. It's an older model Lead 2, I think with upgraded polyphany but I've no idea how to check really. It's got one broken key (the bit that stops the key springing up) so it's held flush with the rest of the keys with a piece of tactical stickytape currently. It works though, and sounds good. £300 Also, my Warmoth thinline strat: Birdseye maple neck/fingerboard, stainless steel frets, locking tuners (schaller I think), a vanson PAF humbucker wired to a single volume pot. It's in good ...nick bar 4 small holes I drilled in an aborted attempt to fit a bigsby (I realised the semi hollow body wouldnt support it - should have checked before drilling). Also £300. I'm not a fan of posting things, so ideally a local sale/meet within a reasonable distance please (I'm in central Bristol).
16. I've never seen a bass with that pickup config before... Sounds really interesting! Closest thing I can think of would the the Fender Urge basses I suppose.

19. Anyone read Revolution in the Head? Very good read, some fascinating insights into each of their songs with some good trivia about the writing/recording process. He goes off on one a bit about the drugs but besides that it's great. The Beatles split up at least 15 years before I was born but they have definitely loomed large in my life, even if I've only really looked deeply into their back catalogue in the last couple of years. They were not perfect but they were damned impressive. More importantly their songs really do move me, they simply knew their onions when it came to writing good tunes.
20. I havent heard this in about a decade, but this thread made me think of it. Perfect pop song!

22.
I'm really glad The Beatles showed up when they did. I couldn't have handled listening to The Beach Boys any longer!
Although, without the Beach Boys, the Beatles later output might not have turned out quite the same. And visa versa... PS I love the Beach Boys very patchy back catalogue though.
23.
I like The Beatles, but I've never quite understood the fuss over the Abbey Road record. It has some genius moments but some absolutely stinking ones too---"Maxwell's Silver Hammer" demonstrates perfectly why the Beatles were doomed.
I think it's really good and flows really well, but my playlist has Oh Darlin, Maxwell's Silver Hammer and Octopuses Garden removed Now it's great!
24.
Skip the early stuff? Be prepared for the wrath of The Basschat Beatles Preservation Society to descend upon thee!!!!!!!!!!!
As a starter, at least There's a lot to get through!
