1.
This is the bass I have to play "between the lines". Ashborys are always fretless with thick rubber band strings, piezo bridge & 18" scale.
I think it may just be that the scale length on a an Ashbory is so short (shorter than guitars) that you have to place the centre of your fingertip between the lines to get the edge of your fingertip to press the string against the fingerboard on the line. ie. if you magnified the overall size of the ashbory up to 34" scale you'd be fretting (or fretlessing) closer to the line/on the line near the nut. I reckon it's just the relationship between the size of your fingers and the size of the fretline spaces. 18in string length is just above the octave on a 34in bass, and when playing on a lined fretless around there and higher, your fingers appear to be between the lines when the note's in tune.
2. only drawbacks for me are the need for double ball end strings (I have to source an adaptor, string clamp thing for my Hohner so I can use single ball end strings), and bandleaders complaining that it looks too 80's....
3. Siouxsie & the Banshees- Happy house, Israel The Cult- resurrection joe, go west, she sells sanctuary, no.13 RHCP- aeroplane James- walking the ghost, born of frustration, government walls Peter Gabriel- don't give up The Cure- torture, the baby screams
4. I regret buying this DVD a few yrs ago. all i can assume is that both Flea & River Phoenix had been at the marching powder. the bit where he conveys the bass sound of a dumptruck falling off a cliff is funny, though.
5.
To be perfectly honest, if your character is like how you portray it tBBC, unless you find someone amazing you should be able to do it.
+1 I reckon you'd be constantly butting heads with a manager.
6.
and was then told by the `shorter' member of staff that I was `sad owning that many basses' and should take up stamp collecting instead as I'd pull more women!
I'm tempted to go in asking for a bass version of this- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Unique-Custom-Made-S...id=p3286.c0.m14 double the pulling power!
7. butt-ugly headstock alert....(as on Axl basses?)
8. dunno if it's that rare- I saw an Urge 5 string in the Bass Cellar in the 90's (when it actually was in the cellar)- I asked the sales guy if it was short/medium scale and he said no, long scale (duh...but then we all know what to expect from that shop). IIRC it was JPJ pickups.
9. was George Lamb as cretinous as he was in the ray davies "interview"?- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fx5oGJD0QdE
10. it sounds like the riff from the Cure's "cut"! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1pNzWSO64I at 0.49
11. key comments to note in the Harmony central reviews- "EVERYTHING on this guitar is total crap." "Hands down the worst construction on any instrument I've ever seen." "Stay as far away from a Tennessee instrument as possible." "Second to worst instrument I've ever played out of HUNDREDS, yes I own dozens and have played HUNDREDS. The only thing worse than this is the Tennessee Harp Guitar I purchased along with it." "I've been a musician for 20 years, worked in music stores, bought top of the line and a lot of cheap Japanese/Chinese/Korean instruments, but this is the biggest turd I've ever laid my hands on" ...any takers?
12. Trevor Horn used a Fairlight to sample NWR playing, chopped up individual notes and sequenced them to make up the basslines. the documentary (part 5) is up on listen again on here - http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/6music_aod....c/6m_evedoc_tue 22.10 in.
13. there was just a documentary on 6music, enititled "the look of love", charting 80's pop productions, and Trevor Horn described recording Two tribes- it took over a month to programme the bassline alone.....
14. spooky how the P at the front is levitating.
15. ugh- look at the heels on the necks- anti-all-access? and square wooden control knobs?
16. I thought Macca used a pick on nearly every track- flatwounds and mutes at the bridge giving that thuddy sound.
17. what's "new" about them? they're identical to Bloc Party and a glut of identikit indie bands.
18. didn't see Later, but I can't tell Friendly fires apart from Bloc Party- same feeble singing over post-punk-lite Gang of Four-rip-off guitars. White lies were similarly pointless on Later- as if we need yet another Joy Division-lite Interpol/Editors clone.
19. Neil Murray's blogged about it- http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseacti...logID=441656703
20. I find it odd that Neil Murray wasn't picked as the full-time Queen bassist, seeing as he was in Brian May's band (IIRC he depped at some Queen rehearsals for John Deacon too), and played in the band for We will rock you.
21. tighten the nut around the post with a spanner, the post & gear with a crosshead screwdriver, or if it's the peg that's loose, you need a small allen wrench to tighten the small bolt at its base.
22. I'm addicted to playing the piano part
23. for the don't stop believing sound, use a pick, both pickups full on or favouring the bridge, and a bit of chorus.
24.
are they playing any jazz on it this time?
not enough to ruin it, arf arf
