1. I suppose that's one way to deal with a neck-heavy bass.
2.
Also. Anyone know if percy jones played with flats or rounds on the Brand-X recordings? Cheers
Rotosound roundwounds- the Superwound "piano string design"set with exposed cores at the bridge. - it's mentioned in the interview in the Bass Heroes book. IIRC he uses DR strings now.
3. apparently Hofner made a 28in scale bass version of their Shorty travel guitar- http://www.vintagehofner.co.uk/vintage-hof...horty/main.html
4. mm, I want that headless. the small body size should make the weight bearable.
5.
JJ was good because he didn't play OTT. he played what needed to be played and left it at that.
he could shred when he wanted to- check out the solos on "Genetix" or the end of "Straighten out" or "Tank".
6. another thing about Golden Brown- Cornwell recorded the solo with the tape running slow, as he couldn't play it at full speed- and often messed up the end ascending/descending scale phrase when they played it live. he's an odd guitarist- there's a live clip of him playing this weird off-the-wall lead guitar part on "Just like nothing on earth" while singing, yet he messes up conventional type guitar parts.
7.
As I said I love Golden Brown but am I correct in thinking that is played on an upright?
in the book "Hugh Cornwell- the Stranglers song by song", he says Burnel didn't actually play on Golden Brown- Dave Greenfield played the bassline on keyboards, as Burnel didn't like the idea of playing just the root notes. that explains why the rest of the basslines on the La Folie album are so different to Golden Brown in both style and sound. Burnel plays it live though, and elaborates the bassline slightly.
8.
The late Benjamin Orr of The Cars was very underated as was the band they wrote some great songs not just 'Drive'.
+1. "moving in stereo" and Best friends girl have some melodic playing from him. excellent singer too. I'd 2nd Colin Moulding, but I think he's mentioned quite often. Comsat Angels, bassist Kevin Bacon (not the "6 degrees of" actor!) Psychedelic Furs, Tim Butler eg. President gas, Sleep comes down
9. I reckon some ability at guitar as well is essential- if only to block attempts by guitarists to claim superiority over you- sure shuts them up when you can play a guitar riff they can't.....
10. thanks, the start of Time was my old Fender precision plus, with the EMG select P soloed. I was going for something like the intro to "machine messiah" by Yes. re. the double-jazz pickup, I'd like a higher output than the Kent Armstrong offers, to match the EMG select P. I'd recommend getting a cheap replacement J body and routing that to check out what the double-J sounds like, rather than butchering your fave bass and possibly regretting it later.
11. ps. I also used the same bass on several tracks that are on the player on my own page- http://www.myspace.com/barrybeatmaster the Ian De Sylva tracks Medicine show, Equilibrium, Oxygen, Broken signal, the old versions of Satellite and Black sea blues, (all done at Toerag Studio, through a Selmer treble & bass valve head into a Selmer Goliath 18" cab, mic'd) and The Now's Star of Angels, Other side, "fast song", Let it feel (DI'd) and my infamous bass solo piece "MTR".(DI'd)
12. heavy ash body, BadassII bridge strung through the body (all that weight gives it sustain- sometimes I think I went too far, as I often have to damp the strings to kill the note, when I'm used to the note just fading out on its own), maple neck & fingerboard, Hipshot Ultralite machineheads with a D-Tuner, 2 roller string trees covering all 4 strings. EMG Select P pickup, Kent Armstrong double-jazz humbucker with series/single/parallel toggle, rotary 5-way switch for pickup selecting/panning (like on ESH basses) on the recording I had the P on full, and the bridge pickup in series mode, backed off at a "sweet spot" level. Rotosound Swing bass strings, a pick on "Gyroscope", the rest fingerstyle. a DI was used as well as a mic on the amp- unfortunately I can't remember what preamp was used.
13. cheers- here's a couple of pics (I didn't use the Trace or effects in the pic on the recording- I played through the studio owner's Harley Benton amp)
14. http://www.myspace.com/newmorningblues 6 tracks up that I played on last year. (the Soundclick player is set to autoplay- it sounds better). I'm pretty happy with the tone on "Gyroscope", and the sustain's quite impressive on Spirit level and Flat earth society.
15. the bloke who played the high basslines in Ned's Atomic Dustbin. (the other bassist played a stingray)
16. Bowie's last album Reality didn't grab me- but I've noticed the songs sound better live with GAD on bass than the recorded versions with Mark Plati & Tony Visconti on bass. I was really impressed when he did "Hello spaceboy" on Later in 1995- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lu6PDuQ97tc (I think the drummer is also now in Gwen Stefani's band with GAD) - but then the single of it he released was the horrible Pet Shop Boys remixed version- urghh...
17.
Ah, Mr. Lindfiled. Now what was someone saying about TBers not having a sense of humor?
dunno about whether he can take a joke though- I posted a spoof pic of an effect pedal "the Bruce Lindfield nitpicker" and he ran squealing to the mods to have it deleted. another time he started a thread slagging me off in the supporting members lounge, where I couldn't see it, and mod John Turner kindly moved it into the off topic section where I could see it- cue a hasty thread deletion.... swings & roundabouts on Talkbass, and more extreme due to the sheer size of it. personally I find their photoshop and other humour threads pretty funny.
18. when Gail Ann Dorsey and Mark Plati swap bass & guitar roles in Bowie's band it's just to have a change- she can slap pretty well- see live versions of "the heart's filthy lesson". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6siuZChminw closeup at 1.20 and check out her singing Freddie's part & playing the bassline on "Under pressure" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNGQor3dED8 - now that's a feat of coordination! I watched that Gwen Stefani live show on 4music the other day, and GAD got a lead singing spot at the end of one song (presumably while the star went offstage to change outfits)- when you've got a voice like that you'll never be short of work.
19.
Forgot sorry. Hot for Teacher Bass
there's 2 bass tracks on there- the original, and a crappy distorted version over it- listen at 0.31, you can hear them clashing. that's not how it was on the record.
20. I'd say maple neck for more stiffness/less vulnerability to damage (too many Gibson headstocks have parted company with necks all too easily)- especially as this is a travel bass. slotted headstocks are trickier to restring, and a bit bulkier with the extra thickness and the tuner buttons protruding rearwards- and maybe weaker (more vulnerable) too?
21. what body shape are you going for? I like the look of the old Ibanez RB999; http://www.ibanezregister.com/Gallery/bass...b/gal-rb999.htm sort of like a headed doublecut Status Streamline. I had a go on the mini japanese precision, and the strings were very low tension and buzzy, and the headstock weighed down the neck badly.
22. one thing I found with Talkbass is that there are so many users that you can find yourself getting flamed, bashed etc. by one clique of people banding together, and then supported by another clique, or by individuals free from cliques, for the very same opinion. the mods vary a lot too.
23. I still post on there occasionally, although I can't be bothered anymore with the epic flame-wars with people like Bruce Lindfield- I recall he was arguing vehemently that the Roscoe Beck 4string version would never go into production.....and guess what, it did and the 5 has been phased out... Talkbass is so big that it's a mix of complete contrasts.
24. see the bass on the left here- http://www.jameseller.com/jamesellerrecord.html he calls it a "Lorimer Geilgud", but it's a Kay!
