1. I have my elec bass into the amp instrument input and my db with single bassmax into fishman then into fx return, I could do with a mute pedal for the db circuit rather than turning the fishman up and down but other than that it works well.
 2. Every problem I have had with basses has been jack socket wiring related that would of rendered any bass unplayable until soldered again, active or passive.
 3. The Genz shuttlemax 9.2 has more power, twin channels using FET and or blendable valve preamp, 3 fx loops which gives you the option of a global only loop for use of an external preamp or in my case the fishman pro from the double bass. It comes with a footswitch and costs less, good old Fender are stopping sales of all Genz gear! Lol.
 4.
So he's reluctant to put (at the most) 9V DC into a mains socket on a keyboard or amp but happy to put 250V AC into it?
I'd be happy to let you see what 6 AA batteries feel like, I have a 1000v setting on mine too
 5.
I've never made a bass-buying decision based on whether or not the bass was active or passive---so long as it sounds good I don't care either way (I have two basses---one active, one passive). With that said, I am very much a "find one good sound and leave it there" kind of guy, so the ability to change sounds quickly using just the controls on my bass just isn't an issue for me.
I think this is the most sensible post so far
 6.
My experience seems to suggest tgatcactives open up a lot of the extreme bottom and top of the frequency range. However I use now a passive jazz and it has billions of top end, thanks to far better and simply electronics and the pickups I have are top notch. A passive bass also works better for me at the moment too.
Yes and you have an active EQ on your amp, we can argue the toss all day but its not that much different to anyone using an active jazz with standard passive pickups other than the distance between the pickup and the controls.
 7.
Passive = simplicity??? the first bass in your thread is a Peavey T40!!! I've had one of them - my current bass has a dual filter preamp with 8 knobs... but it's simpler than the passive T40 to get your head round!!! While we're on the T40.... I had one - and to my hands it felt a little dead, compared to my main bass at the time which is super resonant the T40's massive bridge effectivly decoupled the body from the strings. Odd to play but designed that way and playing with a band you realised it didn't matter too much and it was very rewarding bass to play. My point is that the way the bass was constructed, then the pickups and pickup placement determined the sound - and a active circuit after all that isn't going to make too much difference unless it's been designed that way (in the way a stingray or alembic have). My point - wether it takes batteries or not is the least of your worries when bass shopping. I bet however fancy the EBS system they aint pushing mains voltage down the instument cable! My more serious point was that onboard bass preamps are a compromise of design wether they are on 9 or 18v power supply- in each cases the designer has to ballance the best part with it's power consumption. There's no point making a curcuit that sounds amazing but burns through batteries in only an hour. Obviously on an amp you don't have these constraints and can go for higher power consumption chips... or even ramp the power up and use tubes in your Eq section.... ooooo....
The circuit in the amp will be at a reduced voltage, the jazz I just sold had a preamp the size of a matchbox containing the same circuit as the ebs microbass amp for example.
 8.
The difference is that the amp EQ isn't being forced to run on a 9v battery.... Mind you some classic bass sounds require a certain Eq - the ray, and the slightly nasel sound of a Warwick eq spring to mind
I know what you are saying but people are still boosting frequencies without even knowing it in many cases, I am not familar with every amp but I presume many have active EQs like my Genz heads? Also many basses use 18v or even a lead feeding endless power to the bass from a fixed power supply just like the amp has, I know EBS Freak has this for a fact, it also runs all his leds, metronome and tuner, the average P bass lover would be put off by that without hearing it!
 9. Nice one Tony, another convert
 10.

I was thinking a comedy one where the bloke rode the bass as a bike, I will give you 7/10 though
 11. How many people on here bang on about passive basses only to put it straight into a modern amp with an active EQ? What they are saying is they prefer a pickup with a really long lead
 12.
I'm doing well Pete. Still getting used to the restricted movement but getting there.
that's good news mate
Ah that must be a pain Pete! Did they at least let you have some morphine home with you? To eh... "kill the pain"?
didn't even give me any free paracetamol!
OK! OK! OK! I take it you aren't going out the house at the moment then?
A Team box set getting a beating.
 13. I'm sure someone more savvy than me could conjure an image of a man riding a double bass with wheels attached?
 14.
You'll be happy to know that I'll pray for you, SRPete. You'll be sad to know I pray to dark forces from the deep. Get well soon!
I'll take whatever I can get
 15.
Mate I'll drop in some A&W goodness for you - if I can get some time to get across to you this week!
Yes yes yes!
 16. Blimey just how far north does Wales go
 17. Cheers Sam how are getting on with yours now?
 18. Tim Toft cant be too far from you Chris? Worth a call at least? http://www.timtoftviolins.com/ Website is a bit clumsy, vague pricing and probably a lot more available if you call in or ring first.
 19. I did think about getting an app for my galaxy pad?
 20. I am in Stafford mate, not easy finding a teacher is it? Geoff's clips are brilliant, I really wish they had been online when I started as the rest of the Youtube ones are rubbish! I came on the most once I started to get the 'claw' thing down, I was playing like an elec bass at first as I am sure we all do unless starting on DB. Can you read? most of the good stuff is written afaik, I have the Rufus Reid book and started at the basics and got upto the walking section where I am starting to struggle a bit to get good constructive lines going. My theory and reading have come on leaps and bounds since starting with the Stagg around Christmas time. Be patient, look back each week and take pride in what things you have learnt, dont over do it I have progressed quicker since having just 20 mins here and there than I did trying to put whole weekends to one side, and devour Geoff's clips returning to the same ones to confirm you are doing it right and almost certainly learn more each time. I have spent 2 weeks just on the walking pages from the toolbox, no need to rush. Main thing, enjoy it
 21. I'm alive folks, thanks for the kind words Up and about today so I will get onto some reading and DVD watching, I might get my bass in for a once over while I cant play it and to stop me trying until I should! Getting the nut as low as possible might be a good idea now and was something I fancied having done anyway, as it was playing rattle free I dont want to mess with it myself, I might get her to fit my K&K better too as I am not sure how snug it should be, a general once over and an opinion on how good or bad the bass is would be handy as I dont know a lot really. I will be watching all your clips over and over Geoff, thanks again for these lessons they have really bought me along in the last few weeks
 22. Luck! I recorded a cover of Love Cats for a function band demo a while ago which is a shame as I can play much better now , I had a poorly fitted J tone piezo into the Fishman that I had received the evening before with no time to even open the box before the session, plugged it into the Mac and set the Fishman to the Arco/Pizz suggestion, sounded brilliant!!! never got even close since
 23.
Chris, sorry mate but aren't you losing sight of why you started this thread? Worries over turning a bass into matchwood and all that. I can only imagine how nervous you would be with a £4k+ beauty like that Roth & Junius if strapped to roof of car or young daughter decides to try to push it off its stand .... You can buy a damn good bass for way less than that. I believe you are developing a case of GAS that needs deflating by the wise words of a regular BC trading partner, ie, me!
I have done one live show with my Gedo as I normally use the Stagg because the band is a full noisy function band, we did a little acoustic trio gig so I took the Gedo (really enjoyed it and want to use it much more live), set everything up on stage except the lighting rig, when I did I decided to throw the T stand at the Gedo! :-( laminate floor repair pen has covered the worst but It made me think about gas for more expensive basses later up the road.
 24. Well here I am again folks! Had the plate and 5 screws removed yesterday after the bone had retracted down revealing the tip of at least one of the diagonal screws right into the wrist joint. I now have effectively 5 fractures in the first 4 inches of my radius Dolly the Double bass looking on wondering why she has not been played for a couple of days and counting.
