1. I've been studying both theory and physically trying to play the thing, I wish I'd got into theory/reading much earlier!
2. Santa wants to empty his sack for me I reckon! Must be a fiver. Must be a Jazz type bass. Active or passive. Try before I buy. £300-1600. Top of the list and budget USA Fender V Deluxe, Oly White, rosewood, blocks and bound. But I've never found one with a B I like, if I do I'll grab it Lakland 55-60 Good B nice build quality, not a Fender. Squier Jazz vintage modified, Dont know much, tell me more? Mayones Jabba Classic, maybe. Lakland 55-14 new model USA built J and MM coil switchable, active passive etc But its not a Fender or a Jazz as such? What am I missing and where should I be shopping? PMT Birmingham, guitar guitar Birmingham and Bass Direct are my nearest shops. Any ideas?
3. He bowed out gracefully and in fairness he would be the first to admit his lack of ability, I wouldn't normally judge anyone like that as everyone has something someone else can't do imo and ime but seriously the guy isnt really ready to be in a band even playing simple stuff. He's a nice guy though.
4. I went to see a band a few years ago, bassist was a member here, he and the guitarist had fallen out with the guitarist/singer who was very talented but more of a learn it and repeat it player, every now and again they would give each other the wink and shift maj to min or the reverse. The guy just looked lost and sounded terrible as the others ploughed on in key together, cruel but brilliant, the audience didn't notice what was going on and I had even more fun in the second half after I pointed out in the interval that I knew what the game was and I 'conducted' a few semi tone shifts to them both
5. The previous bassist in my band played the same part for the choruses and verses for Blondie's One Way Or Another, hence the 'previous'
6.
I love Cort basses but this is the model that made me admit that looks do in fact matter
I can see this bass would divide opinions......or a melon, wooden table etc
7. I dont really notice things like this anymore, nut width, neck width, neck profile, jumbo frets, skinny frets, no frets, 34" 41.3" or 35" scale. I think I've become lazy and complacent rather than super skilled or anything
8. I have no issue with people not knowing what they are doing as long as they are honest, "erm I'm not sure, I play C minor to start" would be fine, saying it is in C if you dont know what it means or the difference between maj or minor isnt helping anyone.
9. I'm liking TKS, I dont know what they sound like but the looks draw me in enough to want to try them if and when I need a new cab. My 1x12 Genz is getting a bit farty I think due to my abuse so you never know when the gas will strike!
10.
My Dad died from the same kind of cancer last year, I really really hope Wilko can now put this in the past, my Dad had similar op but wasn't successful, would be soooo great to have someone beat this poxy nasty condition. Bit emotional, sorry.
I was typing as you posted, it goes without saying I dont think 'your' post is brilliant
11. That is brilliant, I saw the update and had that "oh no" moment, I didnt realise it was even an option. Go on Wilco!
12. Well actually both is the best option
13. The venue isn't booking the bass player though, they are booking what they hope is a good band, the person in charge of putting the band together for a show picks the band, if they are hiring an unheard bass player and there are notes available for the show which bassist are you going to hire? Knocking out rehearsed covers like most of is do is fine, it might take you longer to learn but as long as you do before the gig that's ok, could you dep the entire bass line to every song in The Lion King for TONIGHT by ear?
14. Black, 2eq, these things are both the correct options to choose
15. Why was this thread not called "Do you want to see my chopper?" ?, I'm deeply offended by it not being called that!
16.
Who he..? .or is that a generic name ...??
Early oasis, but you can also "do a guigsy" I suppose but I'm not going to mention Adam Clayton at this stage
17. Exactly, Guigsy was (is?) a professional bass player!
18. There are lots more crap players that can't read or play by ear than there are sh*t hot readers that can't improvise or learn a track by ear so anyone given the task of recruiting members for the band is going to hedge their bets hiring a reader, if they suck at reading or their general playing sucks they get sacked. That is the nature of every profession isn't it? I'm an electrician but I don't know much about electronics in machines for example so I either don't get asked or I have to pass the work on which is exactly what a high profile but non reading bassist friend of mine does, I also know for a fact Doddy and Jake are busier than my friend work wise.
19. Probably be possible with Itunes to link the key and the dots commissioned by the artist when it's released, that would be cool!
20. That's only ever going to work in a pre rehearsed situation though, it's still noodling he's just good at noodling that's all. Noodling won't get you a Broadway or west end show gig, your going to say he doesn't want that I know but the point is he WOULD be missing out on potential work. Of course this is tosh anyway because your girlfriends brother could be professional but is in fact not.
21. Cheers guys, I dont think I'm going to do it right now but I'm going to try and get a few swing numbers down so next time I get asked I'm a bit more confident with the genre, some stuff just needs a DB doesnt it iiipopes?
22. Perfect for a nice little lounge music gig or a Jazz trio, enjoy
23.
Love my 6.0. The only issue I have with it is the valve doesn't seem to be mounted very securely. Tone has been reduced to a quiet distorted fart on a few occasions and I thought it was blowing valves as a swap cured it. After a couple of times it occurred to me to just reseat the valve that was in there and lo and behold, all sorted. Probably junked a few good valves before I realised that! Love the amp though, sounds great and power to spare.
Hasn't it got a litlle bracket to hold it?
24. And you can't play improv from learning someone elses improv by listening to it, that is in itself not improv.
25. The thing is is loads easier/quicker to learn just by listening if you understand some theory, if you understand the concept of the key and can work out by ear what key it is in (my CDs don't have key signatures in the sleeve do yours?) Then there is going to be less trial and error notes.
