What Basslines make you happy to play?
hiram.k.hackenbacker replied to How1's topic in General Discussion
I must admit, I’d never tried until just now. It’s doable, but doesn’t have the same attack I don’t think. -

It's one of those songs where it's all very well knowing what the notes are, but you have to know how to approach it. It's a pick song for starters. I'm sure many may be able to perform it finger style, but I think it needs the attack of a pick. Secondly, it's all about the rhythm of that riff and where the up and down strokes are. There's a video on You Tube of Trevor Horn playing it on a five string and very nice it sounds too, but I play in on a four with a drop D tuning which is how Mark O'Toole played it. -

The One You've Never Tried, But Really Want To

Ritters may seem a bit niche to some, maybe unattractive to others or perhaps overwhelmingly expensive....but....I was lucky enough to buy a Ritter Cora from @molan during a moment of weakness (his, not mine 🤣) and it's a truly wonderful thing. If you get a chance to try one, I urge you to do so. -

The Z3 doesn’t come with Super Fatty’s and the Sklar has Mandolin frets rather than Banjo frets. I think there was also a very slight difference in fingerboard radius last time I checked, but that was so minimal as to be insignificant AFAIC. -

A Dingwall Leland Sklar Signature Series 2. I had a Series 1 and everything about it was perfect apart from only having two Super Fatty's. The Series 2 has three. Saving my pennies. I might be a while 😎. -
I’m pleased that’s been your experience, but Smoothound and Line 6 did not pass muster in the environments I’ve played in. I’ve no experience of Lekato though.

This. Buy cheap, buy twice. Buy Shure, don’t look back.

I've had a Limelight and a couple of Bravewood's (I still have one of them), but if I was seriously thinking about getting another FSO, I would have absolutely no hesitation in ordering from Jon Shuker. You'd get exactly what you asked for down to the last detail, he's incredibly supportive in after sales and I reckon he's give any Fender Custom Shop instrument a run for it's money - and it would be cheaper.

One five string to rule them all
hiram.k.hackenbacker replied to horrorshowbass's topic in Bass Guitars
Some HH SR5's can be weighty if that's an issue for you. Mine was like a boat anchor. -
Not really helping themselves there were they. I can understand that sending the whole bass back from France would be a bit of an ordeal, but why not just send out another bridge unit? Bonkers.
-
I've tried quite a few, but the Shure GLXD wins for me too. Even if you just take @walshy, @bassfan and my word for it, the three of us combined have tested the GLXD through most scenarios with no issues. There was a period not so long ago when they stopped making them due to issues sourcing the parts, but the GLXD has been rebooted as the GLXD16+. Not cheap, but worth it.

Whatever you do, don't go for a reliced bridge. It was impossible to adjust the b***ard thing on the one I bought and believe me I tried everything. I ended up having to replace it.

One five string to rule them all

@horrorshowbass- don’t know if you’re seriously thinking about buying, but a used Sandberg Enigma 5 has just come up at Bass Direct within budget. https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Sandberg_Enigma_5_SH.html -

hiram.k.hackenbacker replied to horrorshowbass's topic in Bass Guitars
I think they’re all great choices. Personally, I don’t like Warwick basses or their owner, so the Thumb is out AFAIC. I’m assuming ‘new’ means new to you rather that brand new ‘cos none of them are within the budget stated otherwise. Of the remaining three, I’d probably go Dingwall, but it would be a very close decision between that and a Stingray, with the Bongo as a close 3rd. That said, I’m very happy with my Lull BBM5 and Status S2 five stringers. Maybe they’re worth considering, although £1500 rules Status out too. -
John Taylor Signature Dingwall Combustion
hiram.k.hackenbacker replied to Napalmnun's topic in Bass Guitars
Which is what I said. Maybe I should have placed some punctuation in there…. “You’re quite right and I don’t think they’re supposed to be - as per the album cover.” -

Rude and I’m sure you’ll realise it once you’ve sobered up. I’m in multiple bands for which I use different basses. The one consistency I require is string spacing. -
