PIcked up a Corvette Jazzman 5 from Ebay last month - my first Warwick. Taken a while to get it set up right, and it's a bit middly for my tastes in places, but in general it plays like a dream. Now I finally understand what everyone was going on about - thats a quality hunk of wood right there.
I have had to relinquish the study/spare bedroom/junk room/music room to make way for a bedroom for ankle biter #2 I have also had a major gear clearout. I now have 5 Rockstand wall hangers up for grabs These are £8.50 from StringsDirect including shipping. I'll let these go for £5.50 each inc. shipping or £25 the lot and I'll even chuck in some more rawplugs.
I'm after 2 - PM sent...

Muzz Skillings made me the bass player I am today - gawd bless those fast fingers and fills. Only saw them once (Glasgow Barrowlands on the Time's Up tour, what was that, 1991?) but what a show and what a player. Then I remember him popping up in some Michael Jackson video after he left LC and felt really bad for him.... I'd take Skillings over Wimbish every time.
me too (seeing ross noble that is). To answer Luke, i think there are a fair few edinburgh players on here. (I'm out in west lothian). My band Big Tuna play in the city fairly often, the next gig being at Walkabout on the 19th October. If you can make it,say hello.
Another Edinburgh player here - just out of interest, what's it like playing in Walkabout? My covers band gig around Edinburgh here and there and someone mentioned there as a venue, is it any good? Sorry for the thread hijack...!
Say hello if you spot me, I'll have a cream suede jacket on and will be with a very tall partially sighted american.
Sorry mate, didn't get this email til just now. Great show as always, he was struggling to decided which stories he could actually fit in to the running time! Met and had a chat with Guy afterwards too, lovely bloke - i recommend hanging round in the wee smoking beer garden afterwards if you want to catch up with him, he usually needs a few ciggys to calm down after the show. Top night all in.

Off to see Mr Pratt tonight - they've just released a load of extra tickets for tonight's show as well, only £6 a head! <geek> Going to try and get my book signed as well </geek>
Wouldn't the right time to have asked this question be before you bought it?
Well, maybe, well, yes actually, but I don't think anything was going to stop me buying it as I got it for an absolute steal. Good to hear that it's recommended, anyway.

...just wondered if anyone had any experience with them and can let me know how good/bad/average they find them? Anything I should be wary of or anything to keep an eye out for? It's my first Warwick, y'see - i'm quite excited...!
The one in edinburgh is running HNC courses and freelance lessons. Kevin Glasgow is one of the tutors so the standard is not to be frowned apon. Glasgow are opening up their own academy for the next academic year. G
I was in the Edinburgh one tonight and had a wee chat with the manager who's a friend of mine. He reckons there's been some trouble but it should pass. Which is good. Although maybe he's just saying that, who knows...;o)
Ok,I keep hearing this on the grapevine. Soundcontrol are on the verge of folding because they havent paid their importers or something, and shops are to close. Now is this a Leeds only thing (As they have 2 shops in the city, both in really dim places that are a sod to get to or find). Any light? I personally think its not happening, but I do go into the stores and see sodall being sold or persons inside buying.......... soooo???
Mate's a shop manager there - i'll see what I can find out...
And I'm looking forward to Guy Pratt's My Bass & Other Animals show later in August
If you haven't seen it before, its bloody brilliant. Going back for the second time this year (probably to hear the same stories again!) but it'll be worth it if he shows off his "Like A Prayer" bassline again.....
Safe From Harm - Massive Attack, probably someone else's line sampled but i love it in the context of that track In fact, most MA
Sampled from "Stratus" by Billy Cobham - find/buy/download the track as its an instrumental classic. Bass was by Lee Sklar - yes, that guy with the huge beard who used to play for Phil Collins (and who happens to be a session king)... -
Evening folks! as per the title, the festival is about to begin...any of you fine folks out there playing at/in it or coming up for the occasion? Its a great time of year and a fantastic event for Edinburgh, going out to see Rumour6's band String Driven Thing tomorrow evening at the Tron bar - that will be way cool!
Breaking the rules by Robbie Robertson (off the Storyville album). Not sure who plays it but it's a fine example of understatement and filling the gaps with 1 or 2 notes. Sends shivvers down my spine.
While I know Guy Pratt played on that album, apparently someone called Robert Bell played on that track. -
I'm no expert but the import duty is roughly equivilent to the VAT duty. Have a google for some rough and ready calculators that'll give you a ballpark figure to work to. In terms of payment, it's usually collected by the courier on delivery as in the case of UPS but don't quote me for other carriers. I've order lots of "small" stuff (like strings and pickups etc) from the states and got away with no charges as the items are generally standard post and not parcels. However, in the case of a large item like a bass which is couriered thru customs, there's almost always duty to pay. Still, with the pound being so strong against the dollar, even with the duty it still almost always means a fabulous deal. Hope this helps. T
Thanks a lot mate - i'll wait until the house purchase has gone through otherwise the better half will go spare.... Is is true that some makes of instrument cannot be bought from abroad though?
-
While we're on the subject actually, i'm thinking about ordering from the US as well. For those here that have done it, what are the import tax/custom implications? Thanks in advance

For the uninitiated among you, grab anything by Michael Franti & Spearhead - Carl Young's bass work is just perfect. Check out the "Stay Human" album for some marvellous soul/funk grooves that certainly, um, "flick my switch". Right now I am mostly listening to the frighteningly cool basswork on "The Message" by Cymande. Yum. -
Yep, I'm in Edinburgh too - a transplanted Weegie! Andy
And another transplanted Weedgie living in Edinburgh here as well...! Welcome.

Right this very minute, "Only So Much Oil In The Ground" by Tower of Power. Groovy. -
This has just reminded me how much of an influence Norwood Fisher and Muzz Skillings were on me - thay basically got me into 5 string. As for solos, well thinking back to my funk metal days, here are the solos that opened my eyes to what was possible when i started playing.... Fishbone - Bonin In The Boneyard Living Colour - Under Cover of Darkness/Times Up (incredible playing!/Funny Vibe Primus - *that* solo in Tommy The Cat, Fish On or Those Damn Blue Collared Tweekers Red Hot Chili Peppers - Love Trilogy/Naked in the Rain/Aeroplane Suicidal Tendencies - Send Me your Money....which leads straight onto... ...Infectious Grooves - Therapy/Stop Funk'n With My Head Mordred - The Strain oh and Iron Maiden - Run To the Hills They all have a proper "solo" section, but I suppose you could argue that these were all pretty bass heavy to begin with!
