1. had my SR500 for 4 or 5 years now, dont think i'd ever sell it either, the zingy tone is partly down to the elixirs when they are new but they tame down fairly quickly to be honest mine certainly doesnt sound overly zingy at the moment. and i do like the elixir feel too, do remember using uncoated strings and them taking skin off but i think the worst were the black coated Duff mckagan strings i bought years ago, felt very similar to one of those tile saw blades. you can get the elixirs at fairly reasonable prices if you look around but 40 quid shop bought is alot but then i have had my set on now for over 1.5 years and they still sound nice, cant do that with rotos.
2.
This is a bit of a sore point for me too. I learn songs at home between rehearsals (we only rehearse for 2 hours a week together) but I'm not sure anybody else does. Its taken us ages to get an hours worth of material together. One of the guitarists spends sunday afternoons learning stuff with another guitarist friend but quite often they'll learn stuff that we (our band) don't even play! Quite annoying as he could be using that time to learn songs we need to get sorted. He's also very hung up on learning things note for note, which I feel shows no creativity or originality. The other guitarist doesn't seem to practice at home much, he expects the first guitarist to learn both parts, then show him how to play one of them. The singer has to have lyric sheets on stage (not very professional, is it?) even though he's been singing these songs for at least 2 years. The drummer, on the other hand is excellent and seems to have his parts sorted pretty much instantly. One last moan about rehearsals, we rent a room for 2 hours a week. The guitarist and singer almost always turn up about 10 minutes late, take 20 minutes to set up/gossip etc. Then after 45 minutes go outside for a 10 minute smoke which means we actually play for between 70 and 90 minutes a week. The more I think about it, the worse it sounds, so rant over!
er i didnt know you where in my band yeah i have the same thing, the guitarist learns it both parts, i learn and the drummer is good enough to pick it up as we go (he has said he'll try and find more time to get some practice in but hes just started back after 8 years so we'll let him off) the signer is the same lyrics in a book on stage and hes been singing most of em for years. anyway off topic there, i think its should be 2 weeks max per song but that means in reality you could learn 3-4 songs in 2 weeks if you commited to them properly.
3.
Yeah i only use the passive anyway. bummer, looks like I'll have to get it looked at. Incidently, remembering that my original MAG 300 was repaired about 12 months ago, I opened it up, and it seems the large white circular thing that occupies the right side of the head (power amp?) Was replaced (with one labelled ABM300) after it stopped working. The guy who repaired it mentioned this at the time but I didn't think anything of it. This shouldn't make it louder should it? considering they're both 300's? Thanks for all the advice by the way. i really appreciate it.
it shouldnt but then anything is possible, and thats the transformer i beleive (no not optimus) may6be give it to the guy that fixed your other one or get it to ashdown
4. Picked up the evo2 this morning, what I did notice was that the active input seems to have more cut on it than before so that does sound quieter, just plug into the passive and control it with the gain but otherwise it is very loud so something is not right on your head by the sounds of it.
5. Just looks like a cappaccino maker to me, chocolate dust anyone?
6.
After much messing around (damn you and your short speaker lead evo 1) I can confirm that the evo 1 through the evo 2's speakers is just as loud as through it's own speakers and so the problem obviously lies with the evo 2 amp. After messing around some more I'm starting to think maybe the original evo has slightly more bass. I've also noticed that with the compression on, regardles of the setting, there is a noticable overall boost in volume. While i dont know very much about compression, I'm wondering if the built in compressor has some kind of 'make up gain' applied to it automatically and to counter this, the design of the evo 2 amp is quieter as a result. Which obviously sucks if you want a lot of voulme but dont wan't to use the built in compression. Seems a bit crazy to me but i guess it's possible. I'm going to give it another whirl at practice this week and see what happens. Hopefully when my neighbours go out, i can try the evo 2 driving both sets of speakers together I'm starting to think it's less of a fault and more a difference in design. I can't help thinking if it was a fault with dirty connectors or something else, the sound quality would be noticable worse, and it isn't. it sounds great, just quieter.
interesting note on the compressor though not having tried out an evo2 i'll base this on a comp pedal. when i turn on my com pedal (depending on setting but with the built in one its just amount you can adjust) it would indeed become louder, this i think is due to the compressor equaling out the volume of the varying frequencies, so quieter sounds become louder and very loud are reigned in. i assume the evo2 through the evo1's speakers sounded just as quiet as before? i will hopefully be picking up an evo2 head and 410 cab tomorrow so i can give you an idea if i have the same kind of thing (if i can remember what my evo1 210 combo was like volume wise) do they get to about the same max volume? just at a different rate? (is one more linear than the other?)
7. do you NEED to , no would it help, in most situations no it wouldnt would it help you progress as a player, very likely think the question you should be asking here is 'do you want to?' and 'do you see the need to?' i learnt from a simple book and video (yes real video VHS) and that book had both tab and standard notation, obviously i chose the easy route to start, i learnt to play on tab. then i learnt by playting by ear and then went back to tabs when i got stuck. Standard notation cant teach you rhythm or timing you have to learn it through practice or listening to a recording to get it or metronome. But i still dont know my scales outside the major and minor ones, and i should and this should be your goal before sight reading imho then you know your way around a bit then learn more scales. and get the fret notes in your head then sight reading can be a little less daunting. but do you NEED it, no you dont. Though in my opinion i learnt the most by playing in a band, i had to step up, i had to get it right as if i didnt it all sounds bad.
8. just joined back up with the 5 peice i used to be in, and i forgot just how little one of the 2 guitarists do, i mean hes ok but he does the same thing all the time, strum!!! fortunately neither of them like playing too loud which means i get heard and hold the thing together. geuss im in an odd situation there playing in a covers band you do get to see how you fit in the mix and how hold things down. it does however sound odd when the rhythm guitar is missing but you dont really notice it when its there just when its gone.
9. Oooh nice Sending pm
10. You could also try plugging into the second jack socket to check between the 2 and plug both cabs into the evo2 so you push it to run at full watts at 4ohm
11. The ohm ratings should be the same can't see any reason why they wouldn't as they would have probes matching the cabs. Interested to know what happens when you connect these 2 up
12. could be a dirty connection on the output channel? as in i mean the amp may well be doing its job but a bad connection is only letting so much through yeah i had the original mag 300 and its silly loud, have you tried plugging the evo1 into the speakers of the evo 2 and vice versa? reason i ask is this would negate the speakers from the loop or point to them, you should be able to do this as if i remember correctly it is a standard jack on the back of the amp.
13. the main difference between the 2 would be the compressor, just checking that that isnt dropping the sound too much, i assume you have tried switching everything on and off controls wise?
14. think it weighs about 60kg ish, is this still up for sale?
15. not logged on here for a while but need a enw rig after stupidly selling my ashdown mag 210 combo , then got asked to join a band a month later doh! gonna make a call and get back to you asap
16. that would look ace with the tiny LG on top
17. hmm been thinking about lessons for a while and i'm not too far from you i think. not sure what i'd need though.
18. long term fave has to be the all maple stingray i had though never got to use it live. current is obviously my SR500 though i do enjoy playing my daughters squire infinity jazz, yeah i know its cheap but the sound from it is huge and amazing for the money. so maybe a proper jazz at some point.
19. according to this they are just metal basses, and would certainly look a little odd playing other styles on it but what ever rocks ya boat heres the link http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews...rlock+Bass/10/1
20. been using a mix of anchored and moving (not floating) so my thumb sometimes moves onto the E, then A but not further really, but its mainly anchored. did try the floating technique but it made my arm ache way too much
21. both, i do it good to have as its a sound you cant get with your fingers, you might get close if you get your nails involved but its just not the same. what ever works works
22. interesting reading this, our genre is slightly different but the same rules apply. we dont have an image and generally our onstage persona is just not there. but how do you take that step from being onstage playing to being a bit more of a show? i dont mean the full on running round the stage like lunatics just more interesting to watch
23.
Guitar players don't seem to have a problem playing Les Paul's' BTW Stevie hasn't always been a Fender P boy, what's the bass he's playing in the Run to the hills, and Trooper video's? Looks like an Ibanez to me?
not sure but that headstock does look like and ibanez infact just did a little hunt and found this, so it looks to be an RS-824 http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary/expans...id=41&now=1
24. if you can find one then have a look for the Hiwatt 200. they can go for alot of money but you could get lucky. i did find one recently but before i could finish off my subtle attempt to get my hands on it a major "friend" breakdown in the middle of myself and the owner/keeper prevented any further dealings. so i know of one but just cant get my hands on it, which is probably worse than just not being able to find one.
