1. I hate to think what shape my spine is.... probably something like a paperclip.
2.
Exactly - it's an Italian name, like Bergantino - stress on the penultimate syllable. Is Aguilar pronounced the Spanish way or anglicised? And Alembic is a.LEM-bik, I believe. How do you say Skjold? Alex
I say it Skyold. I also say two by ten.
3. I don't gig DB with an amp so that's less of an issue for me. I have taken my double bass on the tube (never had any problems, but I just lift it over the turnstiles) although I probably wouldn't at rush hour. I have taken it on the bus many times, and I used to drag a stool about as well. That was a bit extreme, but if you can get a bus with pram spaces I generally find its not a problem. With an amp probably would be a different story.
4. Cab wise, I wouldn't get anything bigger than 4x10s for bass and 4x12s for guitar. As others have said, Peavey is built like a tank and sounds pretty good for the price so I'd probably go with them for bass heads and cheapish Marshalls for guitar. If you include storage you're onto a winner I reckon, that really sets the studio I use apart from most of the rest and gurantees them repeat business.
5. My double bass loves Glasgow's public transport system.
6. Woah nice one! Fuel my already somewhat GASeous fire why don't you?
7. I've changed my strings 4 times in 6 years I think. IMO, unless your slapping a lot or doing full solo sets where you really need the top end you can keep them on as long as you like. That said I just stuck a set of Elixirs on my bass so we'll see if I change my tune now.
8. Just realised there's another thread about this in general bass discussion. Oops.
9. Whoops I just posted this in the basses forum. His description is pretty priceless.
10.
I don't think it's fair that anyone judge him for having lots of nice gear, if you can why not.
+1 I know I would...
11. Fodera for a quid. Well, sort of. That seems like a pretty dubious way to go about it, but the description is priceless.
12. I think he has 3 at the moment! One's for sale (or recently sold) IIRC.
13. By "helpful EQ" do you mean the EQ section or the preamp's inherent colouration?
14.
Oh sh*t, not again....hair caught in tuners. Hey man, don't move..... OW! I said DON'T... OW! OW! OW!
I've been there. It's hilarious for all concerned.
15.
--- That reminds me, has anyone had there music tastes changed substantially by being in a band? That would be interesting to know. -- paul.
I started listening to a lot more powercheese metal because I joined a power metal-ish band.
16. The website says 450W into 4 ohms or 600 into 2.
17. a) Practiced upright enough to have realistically gone to a conservatory. Learned to play jazz (and improvise generally) on upright. Bass guitar was very much secondary to me at that point, and still is to a lesser extent.
18. I bought the tiny one from Dood. That's about as much power in a small package that I've found. There's also the Crate power brick and I think Bose do a small one, about 200W if I recall rightly.
19.
That whole bass really is something else.
Fixed.
20.
Yeah- I think the NYCs are about 1-1.5lb's lighter...
NYCs are chambered to reduce weight.
21. The last couple of DT albums were uniformly terrible IMO, I certainly won't be buying this at full price but I don't have high hopes for it, even at a fiver.
22.
Thanks All, I WAS hoping you'd all be telling me it was CRAP and I'd be better off leaving well alone. Bloody Gas, I do like my Mesa Boogie, but I did like this Glockenklang ( I think it translates as something like Long Bell ?? ) sound too. Size and weight aren't really an issue ( my 400+ is in a 6U shockmount case, hardly light, and I use an Ashdown ABM810 too ) as we move all our gear in a van and also I have a large 4x4 so space is plentiful. Mmmmmmmm I'm away for a think ! S
"Bell Sound"
23.
DGCF or ADGCF depending if I'm using a 4 or 5 string. In the studio though it's EADG and BEADG 3 of my 4 strings have drop tuners so I can drop to D or C depending on if they are down a tone or in standard Cheers
Why do you tune differently live and in the studio?
24. Meshuggah-tastic!
25. I'm looking at this and would be kind of curious of any opinions. Their instruments look undoubtedly superb, and I have heard first hand glowing reports of some of these Chinese eBay imports (although only violins and violas). I have also heard that carbon fibre bows tend to punch well above their weight compared to traditional wooden bows of the same price (although they're selling some of them too!). So, worth a shot, would you say? I definitely think I'm ready for a new bow, the one I bought when I left school just feels too heavy and weighted towards the heel, but I don't have a big sack of cash to buy a nice wooden bow locally. Thoughts, comments, abuse all welcomed
