Need a little advice for a friend who plays in covers/function bands as I have no idea about this sort of thing. She sings in a covers band, playing songs from the 70’s too modern day. They mainly play at weddings and private functions. At the moment they charge £350 for a 7 piece band to perform for 2 hours with a 15 min break. This works out at £50 each.

Is this a reasonable rate to charge for this type of thing?

This is a very large area some bands charge at between £2000 and $4000 +, others a couple of hundred pounds some play for free.
For venues the value of a band is not how many people you are it is how much you entertain or the revenue you bring to the venue put it simply a solo singer who fill the venues is worth more than a 12 piece band who don’t bring any one in.
If they work through an agent he will probably set the price of the band, if it is too low change agents if it still too low change the act or work your way up to better fees as an established act will charge more.
My advice is to do their home work find out what other bands are charging who are of a similar stranded and playing similar gigs.
The question is not only how much the charge but how often do they work

I believe they are under-charging for function work.

If we were talking pubs/clubs then that's a fair price. But given the prices that I've seen locally for wedding bands, it should be doubled at least.

Bear in mind that people are USED to paying more for weddings, partly because it IS a day or half-day's work given that set-up time is often at the other end of the day as the bridal party can require no noise/movement to the stage area whilst it is being used for reception/drinks/food.

It will always depend on the gig, but they shouldn't under-value themselves as it doesn't do the industry any good, let alone their pockets!

£100 per person plus £100 for the band/admin etc. That's a minimum for a wedding or function.
Pubs are totally different.

See the "playing Weddings" thread for loads and loads of tips and good ideas.
See my thread on function band websites for how to get the gigs.....

All depends on what you have to do...

£100 a man min for a function and it goes up as the time spent there increases.

Weddings start at £700 for a 2 hour set because you generally have to write the day off for them..pretty much.

But..... it is all very well saying what you want for these type of things...you need to be value for money.

If someone is paying £350 for a band..then you generally get what you pay for...
If it is a fun gig and you are looked after... it might be worth getting the gig with a reasonable price.

Bands come in all styles and abilities but the truth is not all bands have a value of £100 a man but it is not a lot for a decent band
